for those who DON'T shop at Aldi and Lidl

I pick up a copy of the Metro most days - it no longer has television listings and it doesn't have a lot of news but DH likes the crossword. I mainly read the news on line and quite often buy The I on a Saturday- especially as, most weeks, there is a half price voucher for the weekend edition printed in the Metro.

That's why I like the Metro. Oh and the ^Rush Hour Crush^. I wonder if anyone ever responds!

My post was about Aldi and Lidl. I had already discussed how convenient the stores are for my home (not) and I was just giving the other parameter that they be in the town centre or immediately adjacent to my route between home and town and thse two supermarkets are generally on secondary sites on the edge of towns so that a journey has to be made there separate from my main shopping journey. The same as visiting the huge out-of-town branches of other supermarkets.

And there I was thinking the thread was about newspapers (and Lidl)

I don’t buy newspapers but I do shop in Lidl. I like it a lot. My son shops at Aldi.

The few remaining people who still buy newspapers don’t generally “rush” informan but a kind thought nevertheless 😀

Why would we? In my case I would need to make a 10 mile round trip. No newspaper is that necessary.

Only posted this item so those that don't normally visit Lidl or Aldi, won't rush into the stores hoping to purchase a daily newspaper that might have sold out at other retailers.

I haven't bought a newspaper regularly for 30 years, though I used to take the kids into the local newsagents for sweets (you remember buying sweets before £2 bags of sweets and bars of chocolate were pretty much all you could buy?). I gave up reading papers online 4 or 5 years ago - too much bias and fluff about TV 'stars'. I do buy DGD a magazine fairly regularly and there's not a lot of change from a fiver!!

My prime requirement of a supermarket is that it is in a town centre or immediately adjacent, so that I can go to the bank, newsagent, Superdrug, all purpose store, hairdresser, dentist etc etc at the same time as I do food shopping.

If a supermarket is off the route between home and town centre, then I am unlikely to use it.

Both Aldi and Lidl here and we buy particular things at each - muesli and bread from Lidl, nappies from Aldi for example. We buy most of our groceries at one or the other - prefer their stuff to other supermarkets usually.

Aldi here doesn't sell newspapers and Lidl has a small selection so our Saturday one is bought at the local newsagent - it keeps us going for the week with puzzles and TV information too.

We haven't been in our local Aldi since Covid broke out. Use to go occasionally previously but we weren't too impressed to be honest.

I have a newspaper delivered daily from my local newsagent; glad when the weather's bad that I haven't got to go out to get one. Love the puzzles, features and excellent news pages. Prefer it to on-line.

The veg I bought yesterday was all excellent (or I wouldn't have bought it)!

I suppose it depends on what you buy in the supermarkets. I do not buy meat and I buy hardly any fruit or vegetables there.

M0nica I think it depends what you buy there.
I have had some extremely good food items from there including vegetables - but hardly ever go as so little organic dairy now which means I have to have more time in my day to go elsewhere if I've not got a delivery booked in.

If you are used to free range/organic meats I don't know how well they compare as I've never looked in the meat aisle.
I haven't bought cake/pastries there either - but was gifteda panettone which was better in a bread and butter pudding than "fresh".

If you are picky I think they have bargains to be honest - and generally have a range of "odd" items they have obviously acquired as a one-off.

Much of the fresh food items are of bettetr quality than some of the main supermarkets.

Yes you are wrong farzanah the food and fresh meat and veg is all of good quality at lldl and Aldi

But no I haven’t bought a newspaper for years and years probably 25 years or more I only buy an odd magazine if I m going on a long journey or into hospital

maddyone Mine was a chicken that was so white, it looked bleached, and the bleach had taken any flavour away as well, a packet of croissants which seemed to have been made from brioche dough rather than flaky pastry, were too sweet, and of course, could not be buttery, and a packet of shortcake biscuits, packaged up, with the brand name smaller than a (small) postage stamp, to look like they were from a well known Scottish brand leader in this field. The open box was more packaging than biscuit I think there were 10 small biscuits, and they tasted horrible. I put them out for the birds and even they wouldn't eat them.

Not worth a 10 mile round trip.

I think that newspapers will eventually disappear.

I would buy one religiously. I never thought I'd stop. But I did.
