Well, opining that there is something going on that we don't know about, implying that there is a big secret that none of us know about, pretending it will all come out soon....

I can see how events in Scotland with the SNP have depressed those who thought Sturgeon was the best thing since sliced bread and who now see independence receding.
For those who want to stay in our union it’s a great thing.We’re a small island and better together.

I think Nicola and her husband are bunkered down weathering the storm outside as the three contestants for her succession continue to slug it out with a viciousness unusual even among party leadership contests. Although I suspect that most of those entitled to vote have already done so and nobody is listening much except for the vultures waiting for corpses to pick over and already licking their lips. A lot of them are very keen for the SNP to fail so that they can have a real banquet.

But the SNP is not about to fail. It's in a transition, and activity is only just beginning to recover after Covid, but the sense among many Scots is still that the English-dominated Westminster doesn't understand them and their different ways of doing things and assumes that what's good for England ought to be good for everybody, and whatever one actually thinks of the people involved, the SNP is the only significant voice speaking from a purely Scottish perspective (Alba is a damp squib).

Whoever wins is going to have a hard time keeping up the standard of Nicola's leadership and I'm not sure any of the three has what it takes. For the record, as an SNP member I voted Humza first and Kate the god-botherer and Ash the transphobe not at all. I did so want to have another woman leader and at one time Kate impressed me greatly but she's done herself no good at all lately.

Actually we do in a way. It consists of just not reading threads which don't interest you.

I'll put my tuppence-worth in. I am sure we will become independent sooner or later. At the moment it seems to be later rather than sooner, but as has been said, not every independence supporter is an SNP member or supporter. the independence movement is bigger and wider than that.

Judging by some of the comments above, and indeed the ones we get every time the subject comes up, I don't know why, as some of you seem to hate us so much, you want to keep us in the Union!

BTW, did you know that overseas members, some of whom aren't even British citizens, also had the right to vote!

Only members of SNP can vote so why has the whole country been subjected to the diatribe. At least according to the media that is, SNP is discovering that the majority of voters do not want independence but will the new leader acknowledge this, doubt it. The party should be renamed the Scottish Independence Party as that's all they go on about. Standards of health, education, police (1000 officers lost last year), local authority services all gone downhill and that's before Covid. OK if you are young, receive benefits and have children, money thrown at you. I really feel for the working families who have just over the wage limit for any assistance, they must really be struggling.

You really shouldn't believe everything you read in the (Unionist) media. I think where you've got this wrong is that every body, SNP included, has always known that the majority of Scottish voters don't want independence (yet).

Good point about them being known as the Scottish Independence Party though, given that Independence is their stated aim. You'll be asking the Greens to stop going on about the Environment next. .

Wonder how many Scots are among those commenting, I think Nicola has done a lot of good work in her time, she has stood up for Scotland no matter how patronising whoever has been PM has been. Not everyone's cup of tea but the media have usually had it in for her

Nice to see you back too Volver3, your very forthright opinions are always welcome. I do wonder how we can reconcile "we nearly won (within 5%)" and the awful Brexit vote (IMHO) which was won by a tiny majority and created a very divided Britain. A simple majority is not enough for such a major change in my opinion. I am only a half and half English/Scottish person so have a foot in both camps. All I long for is a decent and fair government and peace for all of us. Robust debate is good to have though, but I dislike actual divide on such a small island as ours.

It used to be a niche party which no-one heard much about outside Scotland until Winnie Ewing, apart from one leader being pro-Nazi.

Devolution gave it an opportunity to grow.

It grew in recent years but the next candidates for leader don't look as inspiring and committed as Ms Sturgeon.

I could be wrong and I expect you'll tell me that I am even if I'm not. 😂
