We caught covid in February for the first time. Three very rough days then DH had it for 7 more days but I tested positive for 16 days in total. Affected my hearing and sense of smell. Our neighbours were very helpful and collected prescriptions from Boots for us. Had thought we would be immune for 3 months but sounds like that's not the case. Definitely don't want it again. Really hope you feel better soon Nanderin.

I did actually think that it would become part of our culture too, but sadly overestimated peoples compassion towards others
They didn't wear masks in the Far East out of compassion for others, more to protect themselves from yellow smog, exhaust fumes etc as well as viruses. My son. D-i-l and 2 small grandchildren live in Japan and even out in the fresh countryside peoples wear masks to help stop the spread - particularly in the cities of course, on ‘tubes’ and trains - it is ingrained in the culture to be considerate of others. He first went out there in the 1990s and everywhere people were in masks - the only people not wearing masks were mainly the ‘’Gaijin/Foreigners” ! Everyone still wearing masks when I went out in 2001 and from the pics I am sent of my son and family everyone is still wearing masks ! Latest pic on a group hike in the mountains -still wearing masks! Sensible . I hate wearing them as I have Asthma, but to protect others and myself I happily do it. I don’t understand selfish people who make a stand for ‘freedoms’ not to wear them - freedom to do what? - catch Covid or pass it on…???
Never understand why people wear masks in the fresh air. We live by the coast where the air is fresh and pure. Last summer we sat by an icecream stall right on the front with the sea air all around us. A middleaged couple came along in homemade masks so big you could only see their eyes. They sat down, removed their masks, ate their icecreams, replaced their masks and sat there watching the sea. It was the most beautiful day and I am sure the sea air and sunshine would have done them more good than a bit if cloth over their face. Do they honestly think covid is in the sea air? Crazy!
DD works with Japanese people, and I've met some of them; yes, their manners are impeccable.

Cases are not the "highest so far. "
Why do you say that?
Missed out the crucial bit - cases are the highest so far this year.

In the far East people have always worn masks if they have a cold or other sort of virus out of common courtesy to others. Something we could learn from here. I did actually think that it would become part of our culture too, but sadly overestimated peoples compassion towards others
.
If they are so courteous perhaps they could stop spitting and allowing children to defecate in front of you.

Depends which part of the Far East you refer - you’d not see that in Japan!!

Why would you say this Daisymae? There are cases of Covid of course, and I believe the numbers are rising, but it’s nothing like it was before. There will always be cases of Covid now it would appear, like there are always cases of flu, but it’s nowhere near as high as prevalent as it has been before. There will also always us be deaths from Covid, particularly among the very old and among those who are compromised, plus from the unvaccinated, but there is no comparison to the situation in the past. Take the precautions that are necessary for your own health and safety and get on with your life is my personal mantra.

Well, they certainly wear masks in Japan out of courtesy to others and have done so since the 1918 flu pandemic. Unfortunately I can’t do a link to the article I read.
I tested positive lst February 22 for covid, 3 days of absolute misery then 8 days still positive but like a cold. I caught it again 4 weeks ago, again 3 days of misery then 5 days of cold symptoms. I have to test if I get any symptoms for my job, we used to test daily but it was stopped, deemed unnecessary by the LHA. I have had 4 vaccinations since it all started.
I do believe it is something we have to live with as we do with flu. Flu can be just as deadly as Covid.
Taken from: www.theguardian.com/society/2023/jan/20/flu-and-pneumonia-deaths-a-quarter-higher-than-usual-in-england-and-wales
The number of critical care beds occupied by flu patients also fell slightly to an average of 221 beds in the week to 15 January. This was higher than the number required for Covid patients in the same week (191) as a combination of the prevalence of the Omicron variant of Covid and the success of the vaccine rollout has made contracting the virus generally less dangerous than it once was

Cases are the highest so far this. Over 75s and the vulnerable are to be offered a spring booster. There's a number of cases in my area that I know of and people are quite unwell, reporting the most horrendous sore throat etc. It's not done yet.

Oh yes, I remember DD telling me about when they took a little DGS to Disney at Lantau Island, people were using the bushes as toilets.
Does anyone know if you can get covid twice in the space of two to three weeks? My mil caught covid in hospital several days ago, has since tested negative but tested positive again this morning.

It’s stll out there although people in general seem to think the’re safe now. The nurses and doctors are still wearung masks and ask patients to do so. When DD took DGS for a hospital check up she had to test him first.
We don’t have to wear them anymore at our Health Centre and a few weeks ago we were at a Private hospital and nobody wore them there.

Data shown on gov. website are almost worthless if vast majority who fall ill either don't test or don't register a result. I know for certain our local hospital always has Covid positive in its ITU and HDU facilities each week. So its a myth that these days Covid is not a serious illness anymore. For some it is a killer. Also the long term effects are unknown even for mild infections I still exercise caution as I did before.
Yes there are other serious diseases we live along side and notifiable diseases too but I can't underestimate the devastating effect Covid has had worldwide and my heart goes out to everyone affected by it.

I know, I wouldn't leave home without a mask.
They have worn masks for a long time to protect themselves against airborne disease but another reason was because of the pollution in cities.

I haven’t worn masks since they said they were no longer mandatory. I am a fainter as I have low blood pressure and for that reason I cannot wear a mask. Wearing a mask won’t stop me from catching covid and it won’t stop me passing it on either.
Apart from feeling horrendous with covid...now developed paresthenia ...didn't know it was that, until telephone chat with doctor..arms and legs tingling/numb...feeling really down and tired also.
I'm 70..fit,walk garden..for myself and to earn a little also...vegetarian, eat healthily.....so as far as I'm concerned...its out there...and we are all vulnerable.
