Drying the washing.

It’s overcast here in N Cheshire this morning but I have risked putting my washing out on the line. Fingers crossed it will dry as I am fed up with damp stuff hanging around in my spare bedroom. These days my neighbour, also in her early 70s, and I are the only people who do actually hang washing outside. I assume others use tumble driers but I am wary of the costs of running these.
Last summer, one of my new neighbours who had just moved into a new build semi next-door-but-one said, ‘Oh yes, you’re the lady who puts her washing outside. My gran used to do that, but it doesn’t look very nice does it? No one wants to look at someone else’s washing. And it’s unhygienic.’ I was rendered speechless. Perhaps that was my first experience of passive aggression. She has ignored me ever since. For the record I do not ever put underwear on the line and my garden is relatively private. It upset me at the time as it was so unfriendly. I dried everything indoors for the rest of the year. I am wondering if I am doing the right thing by starting to dry my washing outside once more. It is just unacceptable these days?

The only time I don’t dry outdoors is during the pollen season - not good for hay fever if pollen from the fields behind the house gets on the bedding!

Kathmaggie Fri 31-Mar-23 14:50:25

I think your neighbour is misguided, her G’ma may have used a washing line but maybe her Mum didn’t. It’s so much healthier and cheaper to dry outdoors - I’m not ashamed to hang anything I wash on the line.

Hang all my washing out whenever I can you can't beat it, who wants to look at washing drying all around the house ? & not everyone can afford to tumble dry it !

MamaB247 Fri 31-Mar-23 14:47:29

It's actually more hygeinic to air your drying washing then dry it under heat where bacteria can fester. You only need to wipe round a drier door seal to see how hygenic this is. Think about coronovirus being outside was the biggest advice given to limit bacteria being spread. Sunshine is the biggest infection killer. I'd take no notice of your neighbour I'd personally hang out my scruffiest pants just to annoy. There a lot of my neighbours still hang out washing including myself. I use the dryer during winter but hang them out during summer.

What an incredibly rude neighbour, and she’s so wrong! I’m sure you’ve thought of a suitable riposte since or perhaps you’re too nice a person.
I really envy you being able to dry your washing outside. I live in a flat and we’re not allowed to dry clothes on our balconies, so I hang them on a dryer and open the window wide so I can get that lovely smell of line-dried washing.
It would be so funny if you could hang a line of huge bloomers out. Thanks for making me laugh regarding the DD cup!

Dollymixtures Fri 31-Mar-23 14:13:39

I’d not imagined or dreamt of hiding my knickers and underwear! I put them out loud and proud! No one should be looking anyway!

Lin663 Fri 31-Mar-23 14:08:41

What a cow! Thank goodness for people like you - drying in a tumble drier is not exactly friendly to the planet! And anyone offended by clean washing - even undies - has clearly got very little in their lives! You keep hanging stuff out and pay no attention to that silly woman.

Bluesmum Fri 31-Mar-23 14:08:29

My ex neighbour had the most dreadful OCD (cleaned her windows and window sills everyday, seven days a week!!!) said she could not bear to dry her washing outside as it made the garden look so untidy!!! I dry my washing outside, altho my garden is totally private and not overlooked, but I still would, even if it were on open display! I love to see sheets etc blowing in the breeze!!! My grand daughter has just moved into her first home and has bought a whirligig clothes line for her garden!!!

JuBut Fri 31-Mar-23 14:08:21

How rude is that person!!?? I always hang washing out, especially when it's windy and the sun is out. The beautiful smell of freshly blown washing is amazing! Keep hangthem out, help with climate change, help reduce fuel bills, and stick 2 fingers up at the stupid woman!! smile

Lyndie Fri 31-Mar-23 14:04:16

I always put my washing to dry outside, if the weather is ok. My son lives in a flat and was finding drying clothes difficult, so I bought him a heated airer. It’s working really well for him and i doesn’t use much electricity . Apologies if someone has already mentioned the heated airer. I haven’t read the whole thread.

Conners12 Fri 31-Mar-23 13:55:28

I would buy the largest pair of drawers that you can find and put them on the line daily.😳🤣

Jens Fri 31-Mar-23 13:47:14

Rest easy, washing dried in the sun, wind or just wind is much healthier than stuff in a drier with chemicals. All your new neighbour proved is just how totally ignorant she is! Leave her with astronomical electric and/ or gas bills, she'll get her comuppence. After all, solar and wind drying is treeeeerrr! Lol. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Hanging washing up to dry indoors is unhealthy both for you and your house, as the dampness encourages aches and pains in those of us who suffer from rheumatism and related complaints. It also encourages black mould to grow on your walls and woodwork.

Two very good reasons for not drying the washing indoors, either in an unheated room or using some kind of heating to dry it.

We all know the cost of electricity today, don't we? I have also read that a tumbler dryer is the piece of household equipment that uses most electicity and causes most pollution - two good reasons for only using one when it is clearly impossible to get the washing dry without it,unless you want mouldy smelling sheets etc.

I hang all my washing out, whenever there is a chance of drying it outdoors. I have never not hung underwear out. My mother and both my grandmothers did so too, although my maternal grandmother taught her daughers to hang cloth sanitary towels under a towel or pillow-slip, and my paternal grandmother insisted that even a married couples' underwear could not decently hang on the same line ( in Scotland in 1947!)

Your new neighbour is rude and has apart from no manners, no awareness of evironmental issues either, so take no notice of her or anyone else who does not want to look at your washing.

NanaPlenty Fri 31-Mar-23 13:42:52

What a rude neighbour - what’s she doing looking at what you’ve got out anyway ! I put washing out at any small possibility and hate this wet grey weather it’s so difficult to get everything dry and i try not to use my tumble dryer . I have a heated aiders from Lakeland which is a godsend and cheap to run but I would still rather put it on the line. Keep doing what you’re doing - she’s missing out on one of life’s pleasures in my view - nothing like the smell of line dried washing 😊

Coincidentally I just received this joke!

brilliant

TillyWhiz Fri 31-Mar-23 13:39:40

If she ever moans again, then just refer her to this thread! grin
Unhygienic! Never heard that one before. Sad isn't it though that there are still people who need to be educated about what we are doing to the environment.
Washing line rules!

Love it!

I cannot believe all this talk of hiding underwear this is 2023 for goodness sake What is wrong about hanging your underwear in full view? My washing goes outside all year round and smells lovely when I bring it in. Love fresh bedding. Do what you like in your own homes

Coincidentally I just received this joke!

Hellis Fri 31-Mar-23 13:27:55

I have always hung my washing out as do all my neighbours. Today is a bit hit and miss, as its already been brought in once because of a shower, but is back out again now. Your neighbour sounds like a snotty cow!, best ignored

Jay21 Fri 31-Mar-23 13:25:39

Hi Caramme
Were in East Cheshire and weather is the same. I always hang out my washing whenever the weather permits and love seeing it blowing on the line. The smell of washing dried outside rising up when you're ironing is lovely. Your neighbour is totally out of order so don't waste any more time worrying about her - the 'problem' is hers alone.
When drying indoors I use a Lakeland Dry Soon 3 tier drying rack which is wonderful. You can fit so much on it and can purchase a cover separately which helps reduce the drying time. When I bought mine it was advertised as costing 5p an hour to run and I have just looked at their site and it's currently 10p an hour which is still amazing. If you put it in a small room and close the door it also warms the room nicely. If I put damp washing straight from the washing machine I open a window a bit to avoid condensation.

DeeDe Fri 31-Mar-23 13:14:58

Now I’ve heard everything, it’s your garden and your washing
It smells much nicer drying outside, if she says anything again, politely say it’s my washing and my garden not yours!
Be wrong to put a pram, swing etc out next

Have a friend who has a rather smart privately owned townhouse style apartment, with two balcony’s one at the front and one at the rear of the property, but it’s in a historic attraction and has security gates, so has some restrictions naturally
But last summer they all received a letter saying their not to stand washing on their balconies only a few did on little low airers on their rear balconies, after receiving the letter seemed almost everyone started to put washing out as a protest, they never heard anything more..,
they wasn’t overlooked and away from the visitors public areas people don’t like to be dictated too, especially on their own property, it gets their backs up.
And that neighbour was very out of order !!!

Mollygo Fri 31-Mar-23 13:14:05

The only time we or our neighbours mention washing hanging out is if we’re planning a barbecue. Your neighbour is rude.

GrandMareS Fri 31-Mar-23 13:13:47

So agree with hanging out washing and have never thought that my underwear would cause offence so have never hidden it. Might do now as it’s been highlighted! As a reason for NOT putting washing out, for those with severe allergies it is advised not to so pollen is avoided cling to clothes.

pascal30 Fri 31-Mar-23 13:10:39

It's such bliss getting into bed with ozone blown sheets, and fortunately I have high walls round my small garden, but I live in a very green community and imagine most people sun dry their washing. Sounds like your neighbour needs to be given a dictionary unless of course she doesn't wash her undies
