Worst haircut you ever had?

In my 20's I had to find a new hairdresser, so picked a shop where others had said they had good results. When I went in, I told the stylist that I didn't own a curling iron, and rarely used a hair dryer. I came out curled and fluffed and hairsprayed to the max. This was the 80's and the era with lots of volume!

Once I was home and rinsed out all the fluff, I realized all the fluffing was hiding a bad cut. I found lengths of hair longer that the others, some by 2" or more. I had to take the scissors to myself to try to even things out. It was pretty horrible. Needless to say, I never went back to her.

Not me but a friend was given such a short haircut by the new hairdressers that when she got home dh said did she ask them to scalp her!

VioletSky

I've met too many hairdressers who are obsessed with straight hair and when I don't want my hair straightened they blow dry me an 80s frizzy mass that looks like I just stapled a candy floss to my head.

I have ringlets if treated nicely lol

Why should hairdressers be obsessed with straight hair? I am sure there are good and bad hairdressers and they must meet every type of hair under the sun.
Maybe you don't explain clearly what you want.OR they don't listen like they didn't listen to the rest of us. take a photo on your phone,I do now.grin

Not a cut, but I was singing a solo in a classical concert in the city and wanted a Maria Callas type big updo. I made an appointment for the day with one of the city’s top hairdressers and took myself and my thick long dark hair along.
They just could not manage it, the weight, everything. I left with a very paltry thing on the top of my head. So disappointed, I took it down and combed it out, turning up to sing as I usually looked!
I now know Callas had false pieces mixed in with her own long hair and it would be an everyday procedure now.

1981. It's etched in my memory. Like Ali I went for a 'practice' haircut for my wedding. I told the hairdresser I wanted my hair up and she gave me a Bet Lynch from Coronation Street Beehive! She back combed it fiercely and used elastic bands to hold it in place when it was wet. The upshot was, as it dried, it tightened and pulled my hair out. I had a little bald circle. I was 23 and devastated. Fortunately I had a neighbour who was a hairdresser who helped me out.

I used to have a page boy cut which I loved. When I went to my usual hairdresser my stylist was off sick so I was offered a newly qualified hairdresser, he started beautifully and the first side was absolutely perfect. He started on the second side and seemed to lose the plot, it didn’t match the first side at all. I didn’t go back there. The other dreadful cut was when another newly qualified hairdresser started to cut my fringe, I asked her why she was cutting it so short on one side. I have a high forehead and always have a reasonable fringe. She couldn’t/wouldn’t answer me and carried on cutting until it was about an inch long all the way across. I was devastated. At work the next day, the slightly odd College Secretary muttered ‘fringe, fringe’ every time she saw me.

My worst haircut was about 10 days before my wedding! I had had several light perms at this hairdresser’s so went in confidently… what a mistake! They gave me a wedge cut frizzy perm. I went home and sobbed . (Think Crystaltips and Alistair.)
I had to go into the city centre to another hairdresser where they cut it into a much better shape. The curls were still so very tight that on my wedding day I washed it and let it dry by itself as any hair-drying made it friz again! Then I gripped white artificial flowers into it.
I never went back to the first hairdresser again.

After all the 'twinks "' my mother administered over the years I should have known better.
I have had two disastrous hair cuts which included a perm.
The first was when I was pregnant with DD2 I was getting a lot of heartburn and finding it hard to wash and dry my poker-straight hair, so I had it cut and permed I look like Leo Sayers dressed as a woman with the new baby or maybe Cleopatra on a bad day.
The second it was all the rage a Coup Savage. Without telling DH I went and had a cut and perm when I came home he told me I looked like Shirley Williams the M.P. Every time I looked in the mirror I cried and eventually went to another hairdresser and it all cut really short then let it grow into a bob.

My worst ever haircut was when I was 11. I had spent years growing my very fine hair till it was long enough to plait. All the girls in my favourite books had plaits and if I had plaits I could pretend I was like them. In those days just tying your hair back wasn't an option so my mother plaited it every morning. In the end she got fed up and took me to a hairdresser. My hair was cut into a sort of 1930s bob with one side held back by a slide. My mother liked it because it looked like a picture she had on the wall. It was hideous, nobody at school had hair like it and I felt that I had just disappeared along with my plaits. It was years before I told my mother how devastated I had been and she was appalled. She thought she had just been making mornings easier for the pair of us.

Enidd Wed 12-Apr-23 21:10:03

Just thought of another hair disaster. It was when I was at school and I let my mum perm it. It really didn’t look that great, far too curly for a young teen 😂

The next day the school photographer took a class photo…..
It was no wonder I never had boyfriends back then 😂

The worst haircut I had was around twenty years ago. It was cut by 'Miss Jo' who proceeded to cut my hair in the most horrendous style and totally against what I had said I wanted. The first few snips and I stopped her and asked what she was doing as it was very short and she was cutting long lengths off my then shoulder length hair. She told me that she was cutting in the style that in her professional opinion was perfect for me and that she would not let me leave the salon until she was satisfied as her reputation was so important to her!! I had no choice but to let her finish - it was a horrendous cut and it was months and months before I plucked up the courage to walk into another hairdressers.

lixy Wed 12-Apr-23 21:03:55

One and only time I allowed hairdresser to blow dry my hair after a cut. Really don't know what she did but it took ages and lots of spray.
When I got home OH said ' What happened? You look like you've been dragged through a hedge backwards.'
He has cut my hair ever since!

Enidd Wed 12-Apr-23 21:02:18

I’ve had a few hair disasters.

The first was when I visited a new hair salon in the town. I’d never been there before but had heard they were good. I hated it, he cut off far too much and I remember crying when I got home!

The second was when my then hairdresser was on mat leave so I decided to ‘trim’ my fringe myself. Of course it went wrong…looked wonky!

Never again 😂

Georgesgran Wed 12-Apr-23 20:52:14

Same as Bondiescot and GSM. I looked as if I’d had my finger in the socket and had an electric shock! It took a rival salon months of treatment to sort it out - I still go there - and was told never, ever to have another perm, which I never did.

mayisay Wed 12-Apr-23 11:00:11

The worst haircut I had was back in the mid 60s. I was leaving my job just before having my first baby. I went to a hairdressers, that I hadn't been to before, and was asked if I wanted the latest Mia Farrow cut. Definitely not, as I don't have her profile! Unfortunately, that's exactly what I got!
When I returned to the office, one of my colleagues told me I resembled a triangle!!!

FannyCornforth Wed 12-Apr-23 10:59:21

Oh it was awful shock

I was 23 and it was two days before I started at the University of York.
I was at home with my parents and decided I needed to look my very best for my exciting new adventure (plus the prospect of new suitors! 😍)

I went to a nearby (quite posh) salon and asked for a graduated bob.
I’d been growing my hair in preparation, and it was now ready to be transformed into something like the photo.
But instead of layers, the half wit just shaved the area above the nape of my neck.
I was horrified, and the more I distressed I got, and the more I completely and tried to explain what he should be doing, the higher he shaved.

I had a huge inverted horseshoe shaped bald area on the back of my head. It measured about 5 inches by 5 inches.

I eventually told him to stop, flung off my gown, paid and left in tears.
Sobbing, I phoned my mom from a phone box to come and pick me up.

When she saw the state of my head she went absolutely bananas.
She into the salon and loudly gave them what for. It was a sight to behold.
She then took me to a hairdresser we knew well, and begged him to try and salvage my hair and self esteem.

On seeing the state of it, he proclaimed, ‘that is the shittest haircut I’ve ever seen’.

Thankfully, he did make it a bit better, but it was a good six inches shorter than I originally wanted, and it took a couple of months for the shaved bit to look okay.

When my hairdresser’s husband had just said he was divorcing her, surprised I had any hair left - I was almost frightened and couldn’t get out of there quick enough.

AskAlice Wed 12-Apr-23 10:49:54

Back in the very early 70s, when short layers on top with longer length at sides and back (think slightly shorter Suzy Quatro) was all the rage, my Mum took me to a hairdresser and had a "quiet word" with her before it was cut. I ended up under the hairdryer with rollers in and came out looking like a scalped Helen Shapiro! Many tears (I was only 13) and I went straight home and stuck my head under the tap!!! It took ages to grow out and I was bullied mercilessly at school by the trendy-girls for months afterwards sad

Kate1949 Wed 12-Apr-23 10:47:27

Appreciate your hair biglouis. Without wishing to bring the thread down, I would give anything for your hair. Any hair in fact.

biglouis Wed 12-Apr-23 10:42:34

When I was 14 I had very long hair. My mother said it looked untidy and took me to the hairdressers to get it cut. They did what was then called a "bubble cut" (late 1950s) but I hated it and never forgave my mother. Whereas before I had been able to keep it tidy and neat by putting it up in a ponytail or French pleat I now had to put hair rollers in it every night to make it look decent.

My hair was mousy colour and because Id always wanted auburn hair I had it dyed as soon as I left school and earned the money. I wore it in a (then fashionable) flick up in the early 1960s. Later I decided to re-grow it and have never had it cut since except to trim the ends. I had tinted auburn hair for years but my hair is now an attractive all over silver. Its still quite thick and down to my waist. I usually wear it up in a plaited bun. Im sometimes tempted to get it cropped short and wear one of the many wigs I keep for my models.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 12-Apr-23 10:35:29

Same here Blondiescot. A disaster.

BigBertha1 Wed 12-Apr-23 10:32:37

When I was twelve my mother decided I must have my long curly hair cut short. I hated it and have hated my hair ever since.

Blondiescot Wed 12-Apr-23 10:30:41

Not a cut, but the one and only perm I ever had. I have naturally fine, poker straight hair, and went to a new hairdresser who convinced me a 'body perm' wouldn't give me curls (I loathe curly hair), but just add volume. This was the 80s and I ended up with a poodle perm Bon Jovi would have been proud of! Never again...

A follow-on from my happier thread!

Mine was over 20 years ago. The chap had cut it perfectly well before, so I wasn’t paying too much attention, but he was evidently on another planet - there was zero conversation and when he showed me the back I nearly had a fit. It resembled a 1950’s schoolboy’s short back and sides.

I couldn’t believe it - was instantly in tears, it looked so dreadful - they were apologetic and said I needn’t pay but like an idiot I did - fled asap still in tears home, where I phoned dd1, at uni over 100 miles away.

I won’t say what I told her I looked like - it would sound terribly un PC now - but after I’d hung up she phoned the salon and gave the chap a bollocking!

Only a couple of days later, however, I felt so bad for being so upset about my hair. Same dd phoned in tears to say a fellow student, a male friend who’d stayed with us, had been killed in a road accident in Moscow.
Whereas my hair would soon grow back.
