Varian’s thread on the average gransnetter led to a few posters outing themselves as Daily Mail readers. One poster also reads the Guardian. I too am Spartacus. I read the DM on line. I buy the Guardian. That’s two of us šŸ˜

I haven’t done either thing Roseinbloom but looks like am being stitched up anywayšŸ˜‚
Your quite right tho, it’s a personal choice what any of us does.

Roseinbloom Sat 15-Apr-23 16:55:12

does god appear through the clouds in order to pass down some stone tablet of commands about our activities ..... my take is the expression = human rights .... nothing godly........ Oreo has every right to read the DM and to change their name if they want to

Callistemon21 Sat 15-Apr-23 16:52:09

No-one- and please leave god out of this- out of respect for those who have faith

I think, to be fair, it is an expression which is in general use and I don't think most Christians would be overly concerned at its use in conversation.
god in lower case is a general expression and could apply to many deities including Roman, Greek, Pagan etc.

I cannot speak for those of other faiths of course

Fleurpepper feels like you’re stalking me on the threads.
As for changed names, nope am Oreo and always have been since I joined last October.
Have you changed names? Why so personal all the time? Because you disagree, a a bit childish.
Saying a god given right is a British expression btw.

kittylester Sat 15-Apr-23 16:31:43

Oooh, who, fleurpepper?

What worries me are the nosey parkers who think they have a god given right to tell others what newspapers not to read.

Garnet, totally agree.

Oreo, who has told you what to read or not? No-one- and please leave god out of this- out of respect for those who have faith.

My question for today is 'who are you' - so so familiar. Changed name yet again?

What worries me is that some people who read the DM seem to think that it is a balanced newspaper, and believe all that it prints!

Well, thank you Primrose and Smileless for your kind comments.
I see varian is saying we are not 'sensible' as we are not in the middle. And volver obviously thinks she has the monopoly on good taste.
Why should a group of people I don't know and will never meet, dictate what I should or should not read. They probably don't approve of what I watch or listen to either.
I DON'T CARE.
I am not going to comment further. Anyway, I haven't finished reading today's Mail yet.

Good for you girl!šŸ˜„

Yet more misquoting. I have never said that everyone who is not in the middle ground is not sensible.

nanna8 Sat 15-Apr-23 03:18:50

I looked at that newspaper online and got the Australian version that looks more like a mag designed for young women. Not much actual news except about Alice Springs. They didn’t like my adlocker so I left. Have to admit the journalistic style wasn’t my cup of tea. Thanks Volver for the heads up it was online.

Esmay Fri 14-Apr-23 21:36:33

OK the DM is not my favourite paper, but it's easy reading !
There are some interesting articles .

When so much is happening in the World their obsession with Celebrity baby bumps and Amanda Holden 's wardrobe and Carol Vordeman gets a bit tedious !

I browse the net for news and read BBC and Al Jazeera .

If I buy a newspaper I'll buy The Telegraph because I like the gardening section .

I might buy The Times and Guardian as well .

Oh please - not of when have is needed ( as I frequently tell my grandchildren)

It’s beginning to sound as though the I and the Times are the best of a rather poor lot. I know my tribe reads the Guardian, or perhaps I should say, that like me, the tribe used to read the Guardian but is currently unimpressed

volver3 Fri 14-Apr-23 20:45:45

Having fun?

Foxygloves Fri 14-Apr-23 20:44:23

Forsythia

Have guessed Volver. Not of guessed.

Who'd've (?) guessed ?
Anything but "of" !

Forsythia Fri 14-Apr-23 20:36:31

Happy days. šŸ˜‚

volver3 Fri 14-Apr-23 20:14:31

I changed to the "of" from an "a". I would have thought that the contraction of "who would", would have indicated that I was using slang. Apparently not.

Glad to have filled your evening with some pedantry though. My time was not wasted.

volver3 Fri 14-Apr-23 20:01:04

I don't have good taste, let alone a monopoly on it. Goodness, you should see my home decor.

Anyway...

Like I said before, read what you like, knock yourself out.

YOU DONT CARE?

Who'd of guessed?

As for the BBC, it is just laughable to describe its political stance as "left wing drumbeat"

For goodness sake, the once independent BBC has been the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation since 2015.

I keep reading on social media sites comments about this current "leftie" government...

I think it has something to do with the furlough scheme during the pandemic, and more recently increasing benefit payments because, obviously, everyone in receipt of a benefit is a lazy scrounger who's "never done a day's work in their life". Oh, and help-for-households because if you can't make ends meet on your current wages you should take on multiple ZH contract jobs until you can... and if you have to juggle that with childcare, then you should of (sic) thought about that when you decided to have kids - or the more popular "if you can't afford kids, don't have them".

I don't know why, but I'm still shocked at the level of vitriol that some on the Right spew towards anyone who doesn't hold their world-view. And that's not a criticism of the traditional Conservative voter - I have many such as friends and acquaintances and none of them appear to think like that. It's the 'new' Right - hard-nosed, rancorous, and very often male. The '30p-Lee-Brigade' my partner calls them.

As for the BBC, well it ain't what it used to be, but having said that I've been enjoying the Reith Lectures on R4 and there are still some worthwhile programmes However it's had its wisdom teeth pulled a bit. But, look at the way it's been restructured, and who by and why.

I’d never ingest any of that bile, so I see no harm in looking for the sake of amusement.

I read the Mail when I want to point and laugh at what now constitutes ā€œjournalismā€. Wouldn’t kill brain cells by actually looking to it as a reputable source of current events. It’s a right-winged trash rag. I’d never ingest any of that bile, so I see no harm in looking for the sake of amusement.

I stopped peeking at the Daily Mail when I realised it never 'celebrated' the achievements of women but only appeared to be promoting their bodies. Making seemingly innocuous headlines about (for example) Katie Price, or Meghan you-kno-who, knowing full well it would generate pages of adverse comments on them and the way they look.

"Katie stuns with new hair-do"... making sure that the most overwhelming focal point of the photo' is her massive boobs.

I do not think the DM is woman-friendly.
