The person you dreamed of marrying

Whom did you dream of marrying when very young?

At the age of four, having discovered that my dad was not available (already married to my mum!), I decided Bing Crosby was the man for me. I now realise it was because he looked a lot like my dad.

Problem not a bad choice - could have been a lot worse.

Warren Beatty, thought he was so handsome and one to drool over. I think he was actually a bit of a womanising egotist but he looked good.

Was always in love with Elvis when young!

I had a bad crush on a guy I know, he was 3 years older than me. We went of a few dates only as friends nothing more, a good 5-10 years later I found out he had been married, divorced, several kids in to with several different people and had numerous affairs. Had a lucky escape but actually still in touch with him via text

I remember having a crush on a man who did casual work in my mother's firm when I was about six. I never told anyone as I felt guilty about it, as he was married and the father of three children slightly older and younger than I.

So I never dreamed of marrying him, but day-dreamed about being the woman he was married to, and all the nice dinners I would cook for him, which I suppose amounts to the same thing.

Since then I never dreamed of marrying anyone in particular, as I usually realised fairly early when going out with a boy that he was not my future husband. I dreamed instead of the kind of man I would marry.

My dreams could not have been farther away from the man I did marry, and as we are happy together, it is just as well none of the imaginary men got in first.

I often think about the boy I had a crush on at school. We didn't talk to boys until the 6th form, but I know he had a crush on me, too. Then he left school. I still imagine a parallel life in my dreams where I stayed with him for ever. In my dreams, it is a perfect life and a perfect marriage. I think it's better that way. Had we stayed together for real, things wouldn't have been so perfect.

I fell in love with Elvis when I was about 10 and thought that if I ever got married it would be to him or someone like him. Several of my later boyfriends and husband had that dark hair and dreamy eyes.

Someone with a short surname. My maiden name was 10 letters long. Ended up with a 9 letter married name, but I wouldn't swop.

I was mad about Barry Gibb. He's the only Bee Gee left standing now!

Sean Connery was meant to be my husband 🤣 My 1st love from 15 to 19 cheated on me in college so I dumped him. I went on to marry no:1 a controller, then no:2 became a heavy drinker so I divorced him too. Weirdly my 1st love has tried to come back into my life ! However, back in the 60’s long hair and denims were a must for all young men, when in their 70’s it does not have the same appeal ….. especially with the bald patch on the top ….. I choose now to be single and am loving my life !

James Drury, The Virginian! We didn't have a tv but I saw him on a tv at a friend's house and I fell hook, line and sinker!

Michael Nesmith from the Monkees. Later on it was David Essex and Kris Kristofferson. I still go to see David in concert.

The man I wanted to marry dumped me. I then went on to meet and marry the real Mr Right. (I couldn't have Richard Burton....)

Cal I thought Dirk Bogarde was very handsome. Loved his films. I don't remember thinking of marrying him, just admiring. Did you know his full name was Derek Ulrike van den Bogarde. smile

No, I didn't know that, Aldom

I probably didn't think of marrying him either, he was 'a pash' 😀

I had forgotten that I was once very keen on Robin Hood - no idea of the actor’s name - in the old B&W TV version. ‘Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen…’
I’d have liked to be his Maid Marian!

I never dreamt of getting married when I was a young child but when I was 19 I met the "man of my dreams" and we fell in love. We were far too young but made plans to marry. A couple of months before our wedding he met someone else.
I met my husband a few years later and we have been (mostly) happily married for 40 years and I heard from a mutual friend many years later that "man of my dreams" and his wife were still together with a family so it is probably all for the best. I have never been able to bring myself to get rid of my 'first' engagement ring though.

When I was about 5 I wanted to be the Disney character Tiger Lily. I acquired a bow and arrow and a fringed dress. My crush was Peter Pan! Imagination's a great thing.

When I was in my late teens I had a real crush on an American pop star called Del Shannon. I used to dream about going to America and marrying him. I did go and work in America many years later (1990s) but he had died in mysterious circumstances by then.

Andy Fairweather Low of Amen Corner. And later on I did quite fancy marrying Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall. Can you see a pattern emerging? 😂

Andy Fairweather Lowe wrote his autograph on my arm. Such a long name went all the way up! I didn't wash for ages... wink
