The person you dreamed of marrying

I never even thought about getting married when I was young.

I did have a crush on Davy Jones of the Monkees when I was about seven.

I adored Roger Moore - watched Ivanhoe as a small girl, and seeing him on other TV programmes growing up I fell for his looks, his smooth, sexy voice, and his sense of humour. I still thought he was wonderful as an elderly man - if you've got it, you've got it - for life, it seems!

If it had to be someone unrealistic Gregory Peck when I was about 10. His smooth dark looks and manners. I got the dark looks and manners but not the smoothness.

Being absolutely horse mad -

It was the idea of having a stable that attracted me !

I thought on the lines of Black Beauty so I'd have a black , a grey and a Ginger horse as well !

By 15 wearing jodhpurs / boy clothes all the time became the thing of the past - pretty dresses and make up became my new look .

My friend's boyfriend when I was 16. She told me after a few weeks I might as well have him as all he did was ask questions about me. At the time I was going out with his friend.
We both split with respective partners and he offered to walk me home. I thought he was a bore and a swot and his chat did not match his looks.
Six weeks later I got a letter asking me out and we were together for seven years on and off until we married 50 years ago next year. He's still duff at chat-up lines and certainly no smoothy.

Looking at him now, he hasn't aged that well.

I suppose ‘dreaming’ was the wrong word when I posted. I was thinking more of the unrealistic hopes of young children.

I know this sounds very odd……..Lester Piggott, though in my defence I was very ‘horsey’!

My first love who I wanted to marry , married someone else. Having said that I married a lovely man and we are coming up to our 49th year of near perfect happiness!

I don't really remember dreaming about marrying anyone, to be honest. Then when I was around 14/15, I saw this boy and knew he was 'the one', but thought he was completely out of my league. He obviously didn't think the same though - we went on our first date the week after my 16th birthday and will have been married 40 years next year!

Same here ... and I could never ever imagine becoming a teacher either.

I wanted to be a teacher because I thought it would be better to be called Miss M...... rather than always by my first name.
Not a good reason and I was only about six or seven at the time.

As a child I wanted to marry a Romany gypsy with a horse and caravan. The man I did marry couldn’t be further from that image. Safer but nowhere near as adventurous. 😩

I always assumed I would marry but had no clear views on whom.

I still haven't married, although I guess there's time, though not that much. Heck, if got on with it, I could just about get a silver anniversary in.

I don't think I'd give up my "freedom" but I like the idea of knowing what it feels like to want to marry someone, and vice versa.

Unfortunately, I have a habit of falling for gay men, which makes marriage unlikely.

An interesting question. It’s prompted me to reflect on never dreaming of marriage. Maybe if I had, I wouldn’t have made a poor choice when I married at 18. Divorce then I met absolutely the right man. I was wiser about the qualities to look for in a good life partner . Two years later I married him, best thing I ever did 💖
