JFK. I guess it was on the six o'clock news, and my Mum told me not to look, if I thought I might be upset.

Talk on T.V about the Russians sending missiles to Cuba. I took to going out of the room.
The other sitting in a coach in the pouring rain on the Isle of Arran on a Geology field trip and the News came on the coach radio that Martin Luther King had been assassinated. We all started to silently cry.

JFK assasination. Mum was cooking bacon & ran down to the farmyard to tell dad, meanwhile bacon burnt & I was strapped in highchair breathing fumes. But it is the first thing I can definitely remember although I didn't understand about USA presidents at the time.I coughed black mucus for days apparently but recovered without medical attention.

JFK’s assassination. I recall a newsflash interrupting something I was watching, but not which programme it was. I was the only person in the room, so I’m guessing my dad was at work, and my mum was putting my siblings to bed.

Most of us here are interested in current affairs and it got me wondering about our earliest memories of the news that was so major that it could never be forgotten. My earliest such memory is of decimalisation in February, 1971. I was just six at the time and in my second year of primary school. We were very fortunate in that we never learnt the old system and went straight on to the new. I can remember our teacher telling us about it and teaching us how to use it. Prior to this, I can remember seeing the old prices in shops and thinking that 6d made no sense if it was six pence and that the new system of p for pence was much more logical. How about your earliest memories of seminal news events?
