When we moved to Suffolk in the early seventies we lived in a very pretty thatched cottage and drove a Morris Minor estate.

According to Dame Edna, people in half timbered houses drove half timbered cars! 😂

RIP Barry.

They are doing some really good tributes to him on our news channels. He was a breath of fresh air and cut through the ‘perpetually offended’ that seems to be the norm these days.
Goodnight possum!

It’s a sad loss I watched him when I was younger what a colourful character he was. Recently saw him on Rick Steins Cornwall he came across as a nice down to earth person.

Gone just when we need him most. In a world where you can't say anything unless someone is offended and people are 'cancelled' by the woke he said the unsayable with a smile.

Another light gone out in the world. Such a brilliantly clever and funny man who will be sorely missed.

Loved Dame Edna. RIP Barry.

BlueBelle Sat 22-Apr-23 18:43:35

Nice man but I didn’t find him funny looks like I m the only one Probably didn’t watch him enough to appreciate him but that drunken character made my toes go on edge

Kandinsky Sat 22-Apr-23 18:34:37

Very sad. I loved him.

Oh dear, another great loss to the world of good comedy.

Loved Dame Edna, Barry's impression of certain Australian matriarchs was spot on, clever, naughty but never offensive.

He will be missed.

RIP Barry Humphreys

Oh dear, not another one. He was one of the few comedians who made me laugh out loud. I can't think of one who even makes me smile now. RIP Dame Edna.

Victoria Wood died 7 years ago!

Hard to believe.

We once saw him live, too - he was hilarious, funnier than on TV. I well remember him referring to the people in the upper circle (the ‘gods’) as ‘the poor little paupers’ and calling out now and then ‘Are you all right up there, paups?’

I just loved Dame Edna, one of my very favourite characters. She could say anything to anyone and get away with it. So cheeky. No-one would ever dare say those things.

Apparently Edna was based on his mother and aunties from 1950s Melbourne. I can just imagine what they were like. 😂

crazyH Sat 22-Apr-23 13:43:54

Sorry to hear this - I loved Dame Edna r.I.p.

Grandma70s Sat 22-Apr-23 13:38:11

My husband was Australian, a great fan of Dame Edna. I think he knew a few people like her!

lixy Sat 22-Apr-23 13:26:03

Such a funny, funny man with no malice, just brilliant, caustic wit. RIP

Jaxjacky Sat 22-Apr-23 13:23:50

I watched the programme he did in Cornwall with Rick Stein recently.
He’ll be missed RIP.

Aveline Sat 22-Apr-23 13:15:02

So sad to read this. He was in sparkling form until recently. His articles in the 'Oldie' remained characteristically shocking. I can only assume he didn't think youngsters read it. So funny. So naughty. Sir Les Paterson the Australian cultural attache was our favourite.

Louella12 Sat 22-Apr-23 13:11:45

He was such a hoot. Loved him when he barged in to the seats at 4th Royal Variety where Charles and Camilla were seated

After a few minutes discussion she realised she had better seats elsewhere.

Just a funny, funny man

And Edna, what a gal she was.

All these older funnies leaping from this mortal coil Very sad do see them go,

FannyCornforth Sat 22-Apr-23 13:11:34

Foxygloves

So sad.

With Paul O’Grady, Victoria Wood, Tim Brooke-Taylor and others we have lost in the last couple of years there must be a heck of a party on a cloud somewhere.

Yes, that’s lovely. And not forgetting the other Barry, Barry Cryer

Smileless2012 Sat 22-Apr-23 13:07:21

"there must be a heck of a party on a cloud somewhere" what a lovely thought Foxygloves.

RIP Dame Edna flowers.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 22-Apr-23 13:02:26

I was never a fan until we went to see him in London many years ago and I must admit his stage show was excellent.

RIP 💐

FannyCornforth Sat 22-Apr-23 12:50:00

No. Oh no. I really, really loved Barry

MrsThatcher Sat 22-Apr-23 12:35:59

Wonderful, funny man. R.I.P.
