Happy St.George's Day to you too! Sadly we don't seem to celebrate our patron Saint.

Namsnanny Sun 23-Apr-23 14:26:13

Thats a good way to celebrate Spinnaker

Just to say it's strange that all the patron saints of the UK were never born in the country they represent! confused

Who says we're not inclusive grin

Happy St.George's Day to you too! Sadly we don't seem to celebrate our patron Saint.

My thoughts too CazzJazz Compared to when it's one of the other patron saints St George doesn't seem to attract the interest ? Or is that just me hmm

Happy St George’s day and it’s our 46th wedding anniversary! Who said it wouldn’t last😂😂😂. Have a great day all! We’ve had roast beef and Yorkshire pudding today all catered for from our local restaurant!

Happy St George's Day to all my English friends. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Being English-born myself (into a Dissident tradition not bothered much with saints, and with a hotch-potch of Irish, Scottish and French genes in my not-too-distant ancestry) I prefer to think of today as Shakespeare Day on the grounds that

a) Shakespeare actually existed and really was English, not a semi-mythical Greek with elements of the ancient legend of Perseus tacked on,

b) Shakespeare's patronage is not shared with Ukraine, Ethiopia, Georgia, the Spanish provinces of Aragón and Catalunya, and the city of Moscow,

c) Shakespeare is surely the most internationally notable English person in history and a more than worthy national icon.

So, happy Shakespeare Day too!

What about St David? Born in Wales.

What about St David? Born in Wales asked Brahumbug

Yes, everything we know would point to the fact that Dewi Sant was born in Wales.

Ok, I read there was questioned mark over his date of birth and the place of birth, plus the bones couldn't be confirmed as the correct date(?)

But, I'm happy to be corrected smile

St Andrew seems to have the most credible history, (Galilee).

On a Ramblers' holiday in Spain, staying for a few days in the not very touristy town of Caceres, I enjoyed watching their St George's Day pageant which culminated with the Saint riding his horse on to the stage and decapitating the dragon at which point fireworks shot up from all the surrounding buildings. George seems to be a very ubiquitous saint!

Namsnanny Mon 24-Apr-23 21:07:56

I remember Portugal has dibbs on him annodomini, and possibly Italy, but I didn't know Spain celebrated his day.

I like the idea of fireworks, especially as it has been cold here sad (there is no shivering emoji)

Hope you have a good holiday.
