Has anyone won a significant amount, or know someone who has? I don’t play as I think it is a con, although I appreciate miney goes towards good causes.

My Dad enjoyed his weekly flutter on the national lottery and had lots of modest wins on his weekly ticket. Over the course of a month he’d at least recoup the cost of his tickets and often had 4 winning numbers.

When I was sitting with him in his final days he asked me to keep his numbers going as he was sure the jackpot was coming .

That was 10 years ago and I’m afraid Dad’s lucky numbers died with him. I rarely win anything more than a free ticket for 2 numbers. I can’t stop myself from buying his ticket as I wouldn’t have the will power not to glance at the winning numbers.

Remember the Law of Attraction m0nica- if you don't expect a big win you won't attract it!

Oh, I expect a major premium bond win every month.

Perhaps they've lost my address.

We play, as a family group. The money is well spent.

I think the law of attraction is nonsense. My belief is based on the laws of mathematics.

I work for a number of charities as a bid writer including the national lottery. The lottery is one of the biggest funders who have had an amazing impact on vulnerable and disadvantaged people's lives. In one way or another we have all benefitted.

A work colleague won £120,000 on their wedding day in 1997!

It looks as though a lot of us know a big winner!

One of DD1’s colleagues came back from lunch recently with the happy news that he’d just won half a million on a scratch card. He took early retirement on the strength of it. smile

We won £1200 on the lottery in its first year, when the draw was shown live on TV at 8pm then you’d to wait till 9.30pm, ring up and find out how much you’d get. We were all very excited and making big plans - we actually thought the 5 numbers would net us a life-changing win. It paid for a family holiday though so no complaints!

We have a family syndicate now - just one line each draw. That little frisson of “it could be us” is still there, and it’s good to know that a lot of causes are helped by lottery money.

We won the equivalent of 15,000 GBP about 20 years ago. It was tremendously exciting. It wasn't the lotto, but a contest at a grocery store. They did the big cake and made us hold a huge cheque up for photos, etc.

We had our first ever international holiday, put some money in the kids education accounts, and put some on the mortgage. Since the kids were teens at the time, we gave them an amount similar to a generous birthday gift to spend as they pleased.

We are very fortunate!

I think I get that Siope . I never was good with numbers. 😁 Your explanation is very clear.
I always do lucky dip these days after years of no luck with birthdays.

I worked at Sainsbury's and a syndicate there worn the top prize. There were 9 of them and each got £38,000. I also know of four individuals who won various amount all in the tens of thousands.

I rarely do the lottery just a lucky dip every 2 months or so. One Sunday night I had a dream that I won big so bought a lucky dip that week. Went to bed the night of the lottery and woke up at 3am to a beep on my phone. Message said you have won a prize on the lottery. Woke up OH all excited and checked how much. It was only £70. I was gutted and OH wasn't happy about being woke up.
Still waiting to dream it again but no luck so far

In what way is it a con, nobody is making you buy a ticket! Yes I’ve won a few times only small amounts generally on scratch cards, I also get ticket for euromillions and one for set for life each week .

MrsNemo Wed 26-Apr-23 14:55:35

My work colleague won £1,000,000 with a lucky dip - she retired!

I only enter the Free Postcode Lottery - now called Pick my postcode - so not spending any money just a few minutes a day checking if my postcode comes up.

pickmypostcode.com/?ref=44623

I haven't won yet but it's free!

They had a linked site of prizes you could enter daily and I won something on that, but it was a game which was too old for my grandchild so I donated it to a raffle! Unfortunately that site is closing this week - I think it's because of the cost of living crisis as the company could no longer afford the prizes.

I don’t do the National Lottery, but do have £10 a month on The Veterans Lottery. Only recently joined, so no prizes yet. I’d rather support a cause directly like this, then I know my money goes to good things of my own choosing.

HannahLoisLuke Wed 26-Apr-23 14:21:42

Somebody I knew twice won tens of thousands. I believe he was part of a syndicate so probably had lots of entries.

NannaFirework Wed 26-Apr-23 14:15:51

No but I’m due a big win 🤞🏻

Netty63 Wed 26-Apr-23 13:55:33

I know of a person who has just won £1 million

Parsley3 Wed 26-Apr-23 13:45:00

I started doing the Lottery again when I realised how much money went to supporting the Paralympians. So far I have won £4.50 but I live in hope.

Neighbour won £26 million and shared it with children and grandchildren

1summer Wed 26-Apr-23 13:30:28

Over 25 years ago a neighbour won on a works syndicate the amount won was one of the largest wins. Most of the syndicate got £250k but our neighbour took over somebodies numbers who had recently left so he got £500k.
It didn’t noticeably change his life, he carried in working until retirement and he remained a neighbour until he moved last year.Him and his wife bought a holiday apartment in Tenerife and frequently changed cars he also had a collection of vintage juke boxes.

Siope Wed 26-Apr-23 13:29:32

Ooops, that was in response to henetha.

Siope Wed 26-Apr-23 13:28:41

The number of people playing (in the draw) doesn’t affect your chances of winning.

For example:

The odds of getting 3 numbers is 1 in 97.

The odds of getting 6 is one in 45 million.

The odds of getting 5 numbers and 2 stars for Euromillions is 1 in 140 million.

Those odds don’t change no matter how many people play. All that the number of players could affect is the amount an individual wins, as it increases the chances of sharing the prize.

So does choosing numbers under 32, as most players choose birthdays, so it again increases the chances of there being other players with the same numbers.
