I never put eggs tomatoes or fruit in the fridge apart from melon which I only buy in the summer. I cut a block of butter put some in my butter dish the rest goes in the fridge.

I always have a jar of gherkins roll mops sauerkraut and Polish pickled tomatoes in the fridge. Any opened jars of jam pickle etc get cling wrapped before it goes in the fridge.

Cans of cider and lager and a wine box are a permanent fixture and Cava at the weekend.

Small under counter fridge, with small freezer incorporated. Never keep tomatoes, spoils flavour, bread, most fruit, in the fridge., never coffee as apparently it can absorb other fridge smells, garlic etc. Airtight tin for that .

We keep bread in fridge, seems to last better after baking if I cool it and freeze it or at least store in fridge. Apples and most fruit in fridge. If we buy eggs (to cook for our daughters) I refrigerate.

I freeze jam in small portions after it cools. Same with applesauce.

No bread, eggs, fruit or unopened sauces/jams in ours. Grandchildren drink squash, enough meat/fish defrosted or fresh for two days only, veg, salads a couple of cans of beer, 1 x butter and cheese.
In the door, milk, I bottle of soda water and that’s it.
The fridge is only packed when we’re expecting visitors for a meal.

I always thought eggs weren't meant to be in the fridge. And bread neither. I recently discovered that grapes keep better if kept in the fridge part of the time at least.

We changed form 75/25 fridge to freezer, to all fridge. Have freezer elsewhere.
We have large amount of people staying from time to time, and it was very tedious trying to squeeze things in the fridge.
Havent looked back.

Grapes travel to and fro between fridge and fruit bowl. I like them chilled, DH doesn't.
I have to remember to keep peanut butter, Marmite and honey out of the fridge.

Yes, you can freeze jam. I've never found a problem with mine going mouldy though.
We actually have three freezers - our fridge/freezer for everyday items, one which is mostly used for freezing excess produce from the garden and the third, which lives in one of the garden sheds, is exclusively used for our dog's raw food.

I remember reading somewhere that having a full fridge is more economical and if you have space you should fill it with bottles of water. I couldn't possibly use all the stuff you list Franbern - not in a week, and there are two of us! I do a weekly shop and that gets used up.

Basically, I keep in the fridge anything marked "refrigerate once opened" and anything that is kept in the fridge in the shop. Milk, cheese, fresh pasta,, a bottle of white wine and any opened bottle of tonic. In the summer, a couple of bottles of beer.

Fruit and veg are not chilled in the shop, nor are eggs, bread or sauces containing a lot of salt, so I don't keep them in the fridge. Exception: if I have used half a courgette, apple, lemon, pepper, onion, etc, the other half goes in the salad drawer or in a screw top jar in the fridge until it can be used up.

However, I can't prevent jam from going mouldy. We eat very little jam and I have never been able to make it myself. I buy the tiniest jars possible and always use a clean spoon, and keep it in the fridge, but every time I go to use some, I have to scrape off half the contents and throw them away because they are thick with green mould. Often that means ditching the whole jar even though we've only eaten from it once.

Can you freeze jam?

We actually have two 50:50 fridge/ freezers, with one in the garage housing longer dated stock, to be brought through to the kitchen as required. After shopping they are both full. We have a fortnightly delivery, and I top up locally for milk, salad, veg.
Most days there are a fair few leftovers and items defrosting.

DH’s bread does not go in the fridge. I keep my bread in the freezer, but divided up into portions of four slices, which I defrost as needed.
I keep shop eggs in the fridge but new laid eggs from my daughter’s hens stay out.

We bought a new fridge/freezer in lockdown when the shops were all shut and choice seemed very limited. It was a brand I'd never heard of at the time and the exterior was the exact same size as the dead one. What a revelation. It has so much more usable space. My first comment on using it was, " This must have been designed by a chef ...or someone just like me"(someone who cooks from scratch). I love the bottle rack....not just for bottles ...but the odd can or stick of garlic bread.

However I never keep bread in there. When I make a loaf in the breadmaker, half goes into the freezer as soon as it is cool and half in the bread bin. Eggs never go in the fridge, or fruit. I have a massive veg drawer, twice the size of my last fridge.

I always have a full salad drawer, rest of the fridge is usually pretty full too. Always have butter, eggs, cheese, various cold meats for sandwiches etc, meat for dinner, plain yogurt and things like mayonnaise, coleslaw etc. I always have a refillable bottle of water which I top up during the day too. I'd never think of keeping things like bread, coffee or jams/marmalade in the fridge though, or most fruit (apart from soft fruits like strawberries, raspberries). No fizzy drinks - we don't drink them nor does anyone else in the family, including little GS.

We have a larder fridge and it is either full or nearly empty. We don't keep eggs in the fridge, nor bread (I am gluten intolerant but we freeze dh's bread in halves and take it out as and when)

We have a drinks fridge in the utility room so store wine, beer, soft drinks and box drinks in there.

I could easily find space for a message in a bottle as they are quite small.

I think a 50/50 fridge is the problem.
We have loads of salad and veg stuff too. But vegetarian so no meats.
I wouldn't keep water for baking in there. I'd run the tap when I needed it and if not cold enough put ice cubes in it. I don't make pastry very often though.

PinkCosmos Tue 25-Apr-23 09:17:44

I have a 50/50 fridge freezer.

I don't put eggs, fruit or bread in the fridge. We don't drink fizzy pop - which would take up loads of room.

My fridge always seems full as I cook most meals from scratch so there is always loads of veg and raw meat in the fridge.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 25-Apr-23 09:13:45

Very similar to you Fran. My fridge is always full. I know they say you shouldn’t keep eggs in the fridge but I do, and just take out the number I need to come up to room temperature before use.

NotSpaghetti Tue 25-Apr-23 09:12:34

I don't put eggs in the fridge because they are sealed units and not washed (as I live in the UK).
I don't put apples/oranges in the fridge unless I have loads of them.
Likewise Avocados.

I don't put coffee in the fridge as I use it regularly and it doesn't have time to go off. I have some of a particular sort in the freezer though.

I don't put bread in the fridge and don't buy coke etc.
I have a 70/30 fridge/freezer

Following on a different thread, I am wondering why my fridge is always so full.

I live by myself, and for many years had a good sized larder fridge - which was brilliant but when my kitchen was completely redone last year, I had that replaced with a large upright 50/50 Fridge freezer.

I use a lot of salad, so this has a very large salad drawer, which is always full to capacity with lettuce, spinach, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, celery, sugar snaps, etc.

The shelves are also crowded out, yet so many other people with smaller fridges seem to have spare room, I wonder what I am doing wrong.

I do a weekly shop - and the large proportion of this goes direct into the fridge., eggs, cooked meats (eg: ham, corned beef), ready made quiche, yoghurts, cheeses, ready made beetroot salad, coleslaw, chicken pieces/meats to be used in that weeks meals, breads (I know they say these should not be kept in fridge. but I find they all keep longer and fresher that way. I use Nimble bread - two slices a day and the occasional treat of a thin begal, but also have a packet of paninis in case someone comes to me for lunch any day

I also keep cooking apples, eating apples and easy peels in fridge to keep them longer, just putting a couple on the fruit bowl in the Living room to come to room temperature before they are likely to used

Slimmer top shelf, which is difficult for me to reach, has items which I need only occasionally, container with ground coffee for cafetier, a few cola cans, for g.childrens visits, pickles, packet of pastry,
The door shelves are taken up with milk, mayonnaise, a good selection of jams, and marmalades, etc. lemon juice, cold water for pastry, selection of flavourings for coffee, etc. the occasional tetrapack of fruit juice.

Love to hear what other people keep in their fridge.
