My dog picked it up from a secluded corner of the park. Obviously the remains of an animal but I just wondered what the bones could be from

How big is it?

Juliet27 Sat 29-Apr-23 10:23:33

Yes, sorry, that would have helped. It’s 8 inches.

Looks like a radius and ulna. Possibly the lower front leg of a deer.

MiniMoon Sat 29-Apr-23 10:28:38

Eek! Perhaps a human arm bone.😱

Riverwalk Sat 29-Apr-23 10:31:13

Front leg of a sheep?

Riverwalk Sat 29-Apr-23 10:34:26

I once ordered a ready-cooked lamb shank in wine sauce from Ocado - it was on special offer.

I complained as the bones looked just like the ones in your photo, and not like any lamb shank I'd had before.

Ah yes minimoon, deer’s a possibility and preferable to human!! I’d thought rabbit at first, but too long. Rare to see deer in the park but they’re certainly around - mainly Roe.

My other half, who has clearly done too much of the wrong kind of trauma work, and had no context for the photo, immediately said ‘it’s a radial and ulna, and at 8”, probably a child’.

Don’t have nightmares…

He also says mammals have those bones in their forelegs (and even wings were relevant), which look similar to human bones. He’s now off down an animal anatomy rabbit-hole that will render him useless for anything else for hours.

Katie59 Sat 29-Apr-23 10:43:03

A deer maybe a Roe or a sheep, front leg between knee and hoof. Lamb shank is higher up.

Juliet27 Sat 29-Apr-23 10:53:08

Yes, I thought child when human was mentioned 😱

Siope Sat 29-Apr-23 11:05:29

You can relax! On closer examination, the ulna has the wrong curvature for a human.

The radius isn’t thick enough (in relation to the ulna) to be a sheep. Dog is now a possibility.

I am so going to regret ever asking him… 🤣

You should take it to the police, and show them exactly where it was found. It is probably just animal bones, but they will be able to find out which animal, and if, just if, it is identified as human they will investigate. Even so, an animal could have dug it up in a cemetery, so no need to make any dramatic assumptions too soon.

Elegran Sat 29-Apr-23 11:10:32

Crossed posts, Siope. Stand down, troops!

Juliet27 Sat 29-Apr-23 11:11:13

I understand him though Siope. I love an excuse to investigate but I didn’t in this case and left it to GN.
however, I’m puzzled because twice I’ve tried to send a picture and query about another ancient bone I once found. I’ve previewed both times and all looks fine, then when I post, nothing appears.

Siope Sat 29-Apr-23 11:19:47

I’ e had that happen with photos (usually of graphs!) and never worked out why. Maybe someone else will know or even GN mods?

Caleo Sat 29-Apr-23 11:28:17

Long slender bones and I can see from the photo there is a socket for a joint. I'd say one at least is a shin bone from small animal or maybe an ulna from a larger animal.

Blondiescot Sat 29-Apr-23 11:32:12

Looks like a deer leg to me. Our Lab often gets them as a treat.

Lizbethann55 Sat 29-Apr-23 13:06:59

But where is the rest of it???!!!😳😳😳😳😳😳

I think it's a lamb bone from a domestic bag of rubbish, maybe scavenged by an urban fox, so there's no missing body!

Juliet27 Sat 29-Apr-23 17:50:14

I promise my dog didn’t eat the rest of it!!
Years ago there was a dead fox in the waste ground next to the park and my then pointer, who had been trained as a gun dog but turned out to be gun shy, would bring me a leg which I would throw back over the hedge but she’d find her way through again and bring it back to me, bless her. I had to give up going that way.
