What coronation, what king?

seriously though how much has all this cost? In the past year we've had a Jubilee, a funeral and now a coronation. It must have all cost a vulgar amount of money (and I'm sorry if this upsets people but I feel when many people in this country are struggling it is unfair)

I agree entirely with you JaneJudge all the expense the whole Coronation has cost. I thought Charles was meant to be paring back.
Tomorrow we will be back to seeing people at the food banks picking up discounted tins of Coronation biscuits.

We all had a wonderful time on Gransnet on Coronation Day on Whitewave’s thread. Thanks again for starting that thread Whirewave.

In our village our pub had a pathetic string of bunting across a doorway and that is all I have seen . Not a party anywhere.

It is a lot different to the Queen’s coronation that I remember well. My father, dressed in a suit covered in Union Jacks, ringing a hand bell up and down our street inviting people to come out and celebrate - kids party and sports events in the morning, then watching the event on the three televisions in people’s open houses and a big party in the church hall in the evening. Our school gave us all a mug and a souvenir book. I doubt young children will have such big memories of the occasion.

I'm in England and I've seen a 2 street parties and a bit of bunting and flags out but nothing OTT.

This is Australia- they haven’t mentioned it on our news . I have a feeling maybe the republic is coming.

I'm in Australia and it's been very heavily publicised in the media - I don't know what media you are talking about if you haven't heard it mentioned ! .Full coverage was on every television station , with the entire coronation, as well as before and after shows. Also the concert . I know because I watched the lot !

I also had trouble finding toy crowns in the shops because they'd sold out . And I couldn't find tarragon in the shops to make my coronation quiche ( it was lovely despite that ).

Re the republic which you seem to think is just around the corner, the government is heavily pushing the indigenous "voice" referendum so I doubt that we'll hear anything about a republic any time soon. The surveys show about 50-50 in favour , so I won't be holding my breath on that one.

Those who were interested or pro the monarchy, joined the celebration even if it was only watching on TV. Those who weren’t interested didn’t do celebratory things, although lots of them watched it, either at the time or in the news so they knew what to complain about.

One Oz friend said she wouldn’t be watching, then posted regularly about throughout the day on FB and evidently toasted the king with fizz.

I’m glad some posters finally found time to do their gardens or polish the silver thanks to the Coronation rather than drinking from early on in the day.
I’ll be using the Eurovision events for a similar purpose, but without the drink.

No bunting in our street. One house had small flags in the window.

Apparently Kylie Minogue refused to sing at the concert because there is so much republican feeling in Australia.

We had far more events for the Jubilee so maybe people were remembering how much work was involved in that.

My DS and DGC were hanging bunting and waving the flag so not all young people are anti royalist.

Everyone should be allowed to celebrate in their own way[If they want to] it's forcing things and expectations that puts people off.
One string of bunting and two flags here and aog roast in the rain on Saturday.
For the Jubilee we were all invited to have our family teas outside in the garden or on the grass verge, everyone participated. I think something similar would have been better this time then you can do it as your family, pleases.

Well they did actually show it here even though there wasn’t a lot of publicity. Most of the people thought it was pretty impressive but they were not happy with the whining anti stuff coming from our national broadcaster. We didn’t watch that particular channel because it is never up to much, usually out of date and low quality commentary. We stuck with the commercial channels who were pretty reasonable. I thought it was marvellous, no other words.

There was a family party day here and aprt from the WI knittin g nothing much else but we have a big 3 day Festival coming up in June so the focus is on that I think. (Canal boats and music)

I appreciate the extra bank holiday (no, I don't drink) but everything's just normal here - no interest, except a little bunting a few streets away. We must be in the 50%!

We’ve got a house like that round the corner Whitewave full display as usual, some cul de sacs locally have bunting and this is near us since last Thursday.

Saying that there is absolutely no flags etc of any sort anywhere in our locality.

There is a house locally, that always does a tableau of some sort, so there was one for the queens jubilee, funeral, Halloween, Christmas Easter etc.

Coronation?

Zilch.

A lot of people in the U.K. aren’t remotely interested either ( over 50% in one poll). They like having a day off and an excuse to start drinking early in the day though.

What an indictment of our society! To not be interested in the coronation is one thing, but to regard this as an invitation to start drinking early in the day says a lot about the values of society as a whole. I’m a republican but I shall be watching because it’s a historic event, and I may not live long enough to see the next coronation.
If there’s to be a lot of drinking, let’s hope our underpaid nurses are not watching the coronation but are hard at work ready to pick up the inevitable casualties of too much alcohol, although as money is so tight, strange that they can afford it!

Well it wasn't Vive Le Roi!
I was actually quite surprised to hear the God word, because when I was teaching English in a French primary school the teacher wanted me to sing the National Anthem until I pointed out the G word and then she wasn't sure. 😂 (No religion in state schools here).

Reading my first message Volver it perhaps wasn't clear that it was a French teacher of English in a French school.... Actually they were saying "God save the Keeng".....

Several shops and offices in our little town have bunting up, the WI have done a wonderful job of knitting for the tops of posts and letter boxes etc.

The Town Council have planned several events leading up to the Coronation, the Church is showing it live on a big screen for anyone to attend, I expect some will enjoy that if they would otherwise be on their own.

I prefer to watch it on my own at home. DH will probably pop his head round for the main bits.

Several street parties happening around our town. We will be going to one , but if I’m honest, for me it is little to do with the coronation but I enjoy a catch up with the neighbours.
