I will be 93 in May Bijou and only wish I lived next door to you. We have a lot in common because my family was bombed out twice during the London Blitz and we finished up living down the Anderson shelter until me, my brother and mother was evacuated to the Midlands and when on the train being used as target practise by an enemy plane while on the evacuee train until a Spitfire came to our rescue. Brilliant memories.

Everything you have written above is SO true and I congratulate you for being so streetwise regarding the internet. Wonderful to know that you never need to feel lonely because it seems you have quite a few followers on here.

God Bless x

Ixion has a charming idea of ‘Bijou thread’.

Just picking up on how you used to chat to neighbours over the garden (short) fence - my mum too had some good friendships like that, and as a child I recall neighbours’ kindnesses- one family took me with them on their day trip up to ‘town’ (London), and an elderly (!) neighbour gave me books…

Happy belated birthday Bijou. I am so glad you are able to partake in all the wonderful conversations here on Gransnet. Having some connection, even on-line can enliven our days.

It is amazing to think of all the changes in society you have seen, some for good, others not so much. I hope you get a chance to read all the well-wishes.

Bijou You are a year older than my mum who, had she lived, would have been 99 last week.
She was actually born in Germany so saw the war from a different country but her fear and horror was exactly the same. It’s always the ordinary people who suffer.
I hope you are recovered from all the excitement and look forward to hearing anything you care to write about your early life. If not for us have you considered writing about it for your family? I am sure that children, grandchildren and greats will be fascinated. It’s easy online forgotten things can easily be inserted and you are very able with an iPad or whatever you use.

Hello 👋 Bijou! I hope you had a wonderful birthday, please continue to celebrate it throughout the year! I'm delighted to read that you are still living in your own home at the grand age of 100, what a marvellous achievement. I love reading your posts about your life during WW2. My dear Mum told us stories of the Clydebank Blitz of 1941. She was born in 1929.

Great idea, Ixion, I'm sure many of us would love to read more threads from Bijou.

Fanny, thank you for this very special thread!

Belated birthday greetings Bijou.Do hope you enjoyed your day.
Love to read your comments and I feel with your vast experience of life have every right to voice your opinion as you feel.
Not wanting to sound an old moaning fuddy duddy but I feel the younger ones have nothing in comparison to our younger lifestyles, material possessions maybe but not without great expense and quality to family life.It is so sad to see the changes in our children's lives.

ixion

Hello Bijou 🎈
So many of us have enjoyed your reminiscences over the years and you clearly enjoy writing about your experiences!
Also, a poster has mentioned how great an insight you give into the lives of our Mums, when we can no longer have our own conversations with them.

I was wondering whether you might care to start your own permanent thread here on Gransnet, something like 'Notes from Bijou', where you could write down any experiences you would like to share with us of your memories over such an amazing 100 years - whenever you fancy!
I for one would find this really interesting😊

What do you and Gransnetters here think?

I think great idea.

I partly started a thread called nice posts or something, because there is such a wealth of knowledge and insights amongst GNs that are never aired or shared in many of the everyday daily posts on GN.

Away on holiday this week the opportunity hasn’t been there to wish you a very happy birthday bijou, belated good wishes from me.

My Mum was in the East of London during the war and spoke in a very matter of fact way about standing on a railway bridge to check the house was still there on returning from a night shift. Different times for sure as were living conditions for many. I’m sorry you don’t see neighbours now but delighted GN is there for you.
