Well I thought I would start this thread for those who are going to sit back and enjoy the day.

At the beginning of my life -I was 6 years old, I was at Hyde Park Corner under a policeman’s cap, in the pouring rain, now at 77 I am at home in front of the television.

I shall enjoy every minute of it. Just watching the guests arriving.

Catching up - I was so engrossed in the coronation on tv, with four dog walks fitted in, I didn’t have time to read this happy thread.
I enjoyed every minute. The music was wonderful, the commitment of the king and queen to their roles unmistakable. Louis disappearing mid ceremony was the kind of sensible planning parents do.
Penny Mordant ‘s politics aren’t mine but she was magnificent. The question is, why did those old tories vote Liz Truss over Penny?
The matching bands, the way the horses were managed whilst their riders played instruments - well, astonishing skill. A bonkers, glorious, totally British event.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Loads of great outfits I thought, but oh dear! The wife of the new Scottish FM looked like something from GOT in her get up.
Kate looked gorgeous, so beautiful.
The whole coronation was magnificent and a shout out for whoever organised most of it, Duke Of Norfolk? Also for the police.

PoW wore the same dress in yellow or mustard (?) a year or so ago.

JoanThursday Sun 07-May-23 14:29:49

I was surprised to see Liz Truss wearing my dress from Karen Millen!

Bizziebe Sun 07-May-23 14:21:39

The thread doesn't have to divide us, we can all contribute. Something reminded me of what King Charles said yesterday.. "go gently with each other."
And this thread is a pleasant example.

What a pity.
Such a pleasant thread yesterday.

... OK.

I didn't post yesterday so as not to spoil the day / thread.

But I'll pipe down now and say no more. I'm sure the thread will recover quite quickly.

I agree Dickens.

Yes, I know what you mean about Charles looking old and frail, not helped by being ‘undressed’ and ‘dressed’ by others, although according to the media, his valet does all that for him in everyday life.

And yes, no matter how long he lives or his health conditions, he will always have the best doctors, and the best care available.

It’s not fair, I know, but it’s life. There will always be wealthy people who can pay for things in life that others can’t.

It’s not fair, I know, but it’s life.

That's the problem - for me. The total acceptance that this is the way it has to be because "that's life".

I don't accept it. Because it could be so much better. Everyone should be able to live out their lives with a little basic dignity, care and comfort. If those with more wealth can buy themselves extra luxury, so be it... but no old person should be rotting in a second-rate care home.

Clawdy

I'm obviously the only one on here who can't stand Penny Mordaunt!!

no you aren;t smile

I found the whole thing uncomfortble viewing (not that I saw all of it) and so old fashioned but it was a relief that the roads were empty as I had to travel a lot yesterday

The outfits were a feast for the eye Whitewave weren’t they? I thought Zara Tindall looked lovely, as did Beatrice. Eugenie not so much but she is pregnant. Rishi Sunak’s wife was looking gorgeous too. Lots of people said Theresa May looked really nice but I haven’t managed to see a picture of her.

As soon as I saw Eugenie I thought ‘ooh, she looks a lot like me today’.

But I’m not pregnant 🤦‍♀️

Mordaunt had a significant role in carrying the Sword of State in the procession through Westminster Abbey.

Traditionally, the Lord President wears black and gold court dress, but Mordaunt – the first woman to perform this function at a coronation – chose a more modern ensemble in teal green.

i noticed it was a similar colour to assisting bishops

Oh good, I’m glad it wasn’t just me. I have looked for photos to no avail, and I was starting to think I’d imagined it!

Callistemon21 Sun 07-May-23 11:09:48

My SisIL's care home is excellent too, maddyone
I'm sure that put on entertainment and made the day special for those in their care, although my SisIL, sadly, would not have understood what was happening.
At one time she'd have been the one organising a family fete together 😥

It’s a lovely thread Eazybee. Just wanted to put the record straight re the care homes Charles will never need.

My mother’s old care home had a wonderful day yesterday with fantastic celebrations, parties, food, and dressing up. I follow it on Facebook. I still feel a part of it. I know my mother would have loved watching the coronation had she still been with us.

I think we all enjoyed the day despite the rain. Prince Louis stole the show on the balcony with his expressions again. He’s gorgeous.

Did Jay Blades take his signature cap off, once inside the Abbey,
does anyone know?
🤞

Neither my mother nor my father in law were remotely rich, but both ended their days in lovely care homes with wonderful carers. Admittedly they were self funding but make no mistake a it, they were not rich. Father in law was a bricklayer all his life and mother in law was a cleaner. My own mother was a Teaching Assistant. They both owned very average semi detached houses (although mum moved to a sheltered apartment in her final years) although neither resorted to using their properties to fund their care. They had some savings, not huge amounts, and they had pensions, which paid for their their care.
Just to set the record straight about ordinary people in care homes. This is what I saw and experienced. Note: they were not rich.

I agree Dickens that Charles looked quite old and a bit frail at times. He also looked worried as did Camilla. I’m sure it must be a relief to them that it’s over and all went well, except the slight problem of timing! Charles and Camilla arrived a little early apparently with the result that William and Catherine arrived after them, which meant they had to process down the aisle after C+C. Didn’t matter in the overall scheme of things though, but was a breach of royal protocol.

The people chose the government not Charles

Whilst Charles was being dis-robed and prepared for the kingly-garb, sitting there in his white shirt... he suddenly (to me) looked old, frail and vulnerable and I felt a wave of sadness at his human frailty.

But then I slapped myself round the head. He'll never be left alone, sitting in an elderly person's chair, unattended, just nodding off with little stimulus in a care home for hours and hours on end. Or lie in bed soaked in urine waiting for an overworked carer to attend to him.

Of course, none of this is Charles' fault - but he presides over a government whose fault it is. And the stark divide, is hard to ignore.

I agree with every word Iam64 and I also wondered yesterday why Penny Mordaunt wasn’t selected as PM. The choice of Liz Truss was disastrous as we all know. I couldn’t understand it at the time and after yesterday I understood it even less.

Mamie Sun 07-May-23 09:59:26

I thought the man standing behind the king wearing a herald's tunic and a crown like headress looked very Alice in Wonderland. Just read that in 1953 Chips Channon wrote that all he needed was a flamingo and a hoop. 😂

Whitewavemark2 Sun 07-May-23 09:22:32

Looking at some pictures.

The Queen of Spain looked wonderful I thought.

Some of the traditional outfits were gorgeous.

loopyloo Sun 07-May-23 09:18:07

And I thought the weather added something to it.
So very British all those people outside Buckhingham Palace in the rain.
