Well I thought I would start this thread for those who are going to sit back and enjoy the day.

At the beginning of my life -I was 6 years old, I was at Hyde Park Corner under a policeman’s cap, in the pouring rain, now at 77 I am at home in front of the television.

I shall enjoy every minute of it. Just watching the guests arriving.

At least we were spared Smogg.

Clawdy

I'm obviously the only one on here who can't stand Penny Mordaunt!!

I can separate her politics from her appearance and obvious strong arms!

Some people are getting so carried away that they are mistaking her appearance etc as being good for being the PM😄😄😄

I noticed it was a similar colour to assisting bishops

And I noticed it was the same colour as the carpet I chose for my first house half a century ago 😁

Catching up - I was so engrossed in the coronation on tv, with four dog walks fitted in, I didn’t have time to read this happy thread.
I enjoyed every minute. The music was wonderful, the commitment of the king and queen to their roles unmistakable. Louis disappearing mid ceremony was the kind of sensible planning parents do.
Penny Mordant ‘s politics aren’t mine but she was magnificent. The question is, why did those old tories vote Liz Truss over Penny?
The matching bands, the way the horses were managed whilst their riders played instruments - well, astonishing skill. A bonkers, glorious, totally British event.

Mordaunt had a significant role in carrying the Sword of State in the procession through Westminster Abbey.

Traditionally, the Lord President wears black and gold court dress, but Mordaunt – the first woman to perform this function at a coronation – chose a more modern ensemble in teal green.

No you’re not Clawdy but it’s a bit of sour grapes to upset the moment for the grannies who are happy with Penny dressed as Wonder Woman with too much cleavage for the solemnity of the day.

Penny Mordaunt's cape dress and hat were made in a colour named Poseidon to recall her Portsmouth constituency. The embroidered ferns were a nod to the ferns on the uniform of a member of the Privy Council. She researched the designs before having the outfit made, and also spent some time working out to develop the strength of her arms for carrying the 3.5kg sword for several hours. Splendid.
Not a lady to be messed with!

I must admit we did laugh when The Archbishop lowered the crown onto the king's head, he practically screwed it on then stepped back to check it, I think he was worried he didn't get it straight.

Calendargirl My daughter and I did that, although she is only 120 miles away, but as I live on my own it was good to feel I was sharing it.

WW Totally contradicting you smile, I noticed that it was exactly the same colour as one of the ‘supporting’ Bishop’s cape.
I even wondered if it was the exact same cloth.
I’ll see if I can find a picture

Oh thanks, that is what I mean, I wonder if it had significance?

Calendargirl Sun 07-May-23 07:32:13

I enjoyed it all, but for me, one of the best things was the fact that DD in Australia was watching as well, albeit several hours ahead of us.

We were able to keep messaging each other as we were watching, commenting on the guests, the clothes, the proceedings. It was the same the day the late Queen died, we kept in touch constantly.

Although she lives thousands of miles away, and we haven’t met up in real life for five years, the Royal Family are a real link with ‘home’ for her.

Her DH is Australian, and her three, practically grown up children are far more Aussie than British, but they all watched and enjoyed seeing history in the making.

As they toasted the King and Queen in champagne, she wrote “No republicans in this house!”

FannyCornforth Sun 07-May-23 07:23:00

It was one of the bishops who put the symbolic articles on the table

Does anyone know if that colour ( Penny Mordaunt saga) had any significance? Only I think it jarred a bit with the colours on display by everyone else.

A dark green or dark red would have fitted in better I think.

But maybe the colour teal (I think) has significance?

Aveline Sun 07-May-23 06:37:54

I saw this on Twitter

vegansrock Sun 07-May-23 06:16:16

Not to mention that Princess Anne looked like she was about to audition for Dick Whittington or maybe it was she was about to fight Napoleon. 🙂

FannyCornforth Sun 07-May-23 05:40:04

Yes, I saw that grin

vegansrock Sun 07-May-23 05:38:44

Some on Twitter have accused Penny Mordant of giving Poundland free advertising

ronib Sun 07-May-23 05:35:07

But …. I find myself missing QE2! She had the most beautiful smile and real joy. Even photos of QE2’s last few days on earth show her smiling inner strength and enthusiasm. A very hard act to follow.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 07-May-23 05:31:56

The thing with Penny Mordaunt is that she has what I would call a “presence”. In another life she would have been an actress I think. Her sartorial elegance always seems to ensure she is spot on in her choice of clothing. Apparently she chose the outfit then had the embroidery added.

Hiraeth Sun 07-May-23 05:29:02

It makes me proud to be British to see all the pomp and ceremony.

MrsKen33 Sun 07-May-23 05:25:28

Thank you Fanny, I have just read that Guardian piece. Spot on ,I thought, and agree with everyone about Penny Mourdant…. What a fabulous woman.

FannyCornforth Sun 07-May-23 05:05:33

Rachel Cooke in Thr Grauniad has perfectly expressed my own reaction and thoughts.
A fabulous bit of writing

It was fabulous and even for the really anti monarchists something worth seeing. We loved every minute of it and stayed up until midnight watching .
