Well I thought I would start this thread for those who are going to sit back and enjoy the day.

At the beginning of my life -I was 6 years old, I was at Hyde Park Corner under a policeman’s cap, in the pouring rain, now at 77 I am at home in front of the television.

I shall enjoy every minute of it. Just watching the guests arriving.

I’ve just heard that Penny Mourdant did press ups to prepare herself

FannyCornforth Sun 07-May-23 04:08:16

Is anyone else going to watch it again?

FannyCornforth Sun 07-May-23 03:10:01

I’ve just noticed that this thread is now one of the many that don’t move up the Active List 🙄

FannyCornforth Sun 07-May-23 03:08:05

Hi Holly, yes it did look exhausting.
Penny really was a star.
Though someone on the radio has just referred to her as ‘the air hostess’, which I couldn’t help but smile at

Penny Mordaunt looked just right and thankfully she had a holster for the sword. It’s very difficult to stand still for long periods with all eyes on you.
I too am conscious of the ages of the now King and Queen, Charles being the oldest ever to have been crowned. Looked a strain. Glad it all went off so well.

Just a perfect day.

May I just say that I hope Archie had a lovely birthday today.

I have been a fan of Penny Mordaunt ever since the late Queen's death. As Lord President of the Council, she chaired the Council meeting that officially declared Prince Charles to be King.

When many women in high places were wearing figure skimming black dresses and 'open' necks, she, wore a black suit, that absolutely was in keeping with the quasi judicial nature of the proceedings, and formality of the dress of the men present.

Couldn’t agree more M0nica.
Loved every minute of the coverage, as did DH and 11 year old DDG who “learned a lot about royal things today” and proceeded to make an orb, a sceptre and a sword!

I loved every minute of it

Just watching the procession to the cathedral. How on earth do the mounted band manage to play while riding! I think some of the brass musicians may loose their teeth.

Beautiful coach.

I watched the Coronation with my neighbour and we loved the whole thing. It was regal and impressive and yet with real heart and soul.
Congratulations to all the organisers who put it together with such skill.

Loved it all, so glad I watched throughout the day. Very moving.

I must say what a superb job the guy who was doing the sign language on bbc 2 did.

Can I just put in a word about Major Jonathan Thompson, the King’s equerry (the guy in the kilt) and formerly the late Queen’s equerry. I’ve seen him interviewed often and he’s such a lovely man. It must have given the pages who were holding the train so much confidence to know he was there behind them and he attended on the King throughout with great discretion which of course he is trained to do, but I have such a soft spot for him.

You and me both 👍🏻❤️

CanadianGran what a wonderful sight to see the “Mounties” taking a prominent place in the processional. And on horses which the RCMP originally gifted to the Queen, and were ridden today.

Just about to start watching! I woke in the middle of the night and actually did see the coronation live... when I logged in they were already in the cathedral. I did watch the actual crowning and fell back to sleep again before the communion.

Luckily CBC in airing again now at noon, so I can watch the processions and guests arriving.

I think I'll catch up on the thread a bit later....

I, too, was impressed by Penny Mordaunt. I liked her dress, she did a great job bearing that hefty sword and even managed to sing the National Anthem - talk about multi-tasking!

I'm pleased that we got to see the troops in the Palace gardens as that was very moving, as well.

I thought the whole event was splendid. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 😁🇬🇧

I read somewhere that when Louis was in the coach after the ceremony lip readers said it looked like what saying was "yaaay King!"Louis can always be relied on to be wonderful. All the royal children looked lovely smile

Sparklefizz Sat 06-May-23 17:58:23

The military were faultless as per usual - the horses and both the carriages were wonderful - the crowds were uplifting - and I burst into tears when the Red Arrows flew over. I felt extremely proud of the whole thing.

A bit clearer

If you look really close you can see the names of The Queen’s two grandsons embroidered also, Gus & Freddie.

I thought the King looked close to tears throughout, with the emotion of it, and at one point on the balcony I thought that the Queen looked as if she could collapse with exhaustion at any moment.

But, once again, we, Brits, really do know how to do ceremonial, in a way few countries can match

In 1952, I was 8, and my family had just arrived in Hong Kong, it was the Korean War and my DF was in the army. There was no way we could get live streaming of the coronation or even, I think, live commentary. In the following days there were grainy black and white photos in the paper and about a month later the film came out and we flocked to it.

But it doesn't mean we missed out. When we got to Hong Kong we found triumphal arches made of bamboo and matting over the main roads in and out of every communitu, decorated with flowere, pictures and flags and on Coronation day there was a huge procession through Kowloon, on the mainland. It was about a mile long and featured decorated floats, people on foot with flowers and banners and immense dancing dragon with several teams of dragon men. It was an intensely hot day.

The parade ground of one of the army barracks abutted the road the procession went down and rows of chairs had been set up along the perimeter fence, nothing like modern security just a tall pig wire fence, and we were able to sit their to watch the fun.
