No, Oreo, it was a great Aussie Fizzer because half of us were sick and one got Covid so we are celebrating Mothers Day together instead, this Sunday. Two of us watched it on tv with takeaway pizza and red wine, pretty boring in the event. It is much too cold for BBQs down here in Victoria , more snow gear and scarves!

Amberspyglass I live in North Edinburgh too - several streets closed and bunting ++. All depends where you look I suppose.

They didn’t sell any bunting or flags here, none on offer but I managed to find some streamers in KMart that happened to be red, white and blue so I put them round the lounge. The cats enjoyed pulling them down though. Still, I tried.

Did you have a great Aussie BBQ nanna8?🍾🥂🍗🥩🥓

Interesting that there were a few things happening in the city centre - I live in North Edinburgh and you wouldn’t know anything was going on!

Spotted near me, in North Scotland.
A scare-king.

Just look at the BBC news website. It features lots of photos of events that went on all over Scotland.

In my part of Scotland you would not know there was a coronation . Not a single shop or public building with decorations. I saw pictures of the large scree in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh and it was far from busy . I loved the clip of the Celtic supporters singing that was shown on Have I Got News for You . I will not repeat what they were singing but it was rude . We ignored all media coverage. In contrast I remember the Queen's coronation there were lots of things going on and comemorative gifts for school children . We got out 1st. TV to watch it but I was bored .

I have just looked out down the gardens and our new neighbours have Coronation bunting in their back garden! I have to eat my words about no parties here!! 😂

Marydoll Sun 07-May-23 20:30:07

It's such an emotive subject, that I avoid it on GN, because I am neither emotionally robust enough now to take the flak, nor politically astute to discuss it!

By the way, my husband is pro independence! wink We respect each others opinions.

maddyone Sun 07-May-23 20:21:33

I really believe a republic would be far more democratic Marydoll but I absolutely loved yesterday. The sense of history, the tradition, the pomp and circumstance, it was all magnificent. The children were adorable and I felt a bit sorry for our new king and queen, taking all this on in their seventies.

However re independence for Scotland, I’m glad many Scots are pro the union, but if ever there was a majority in favour of independence, I would prefer for the Scots that they got their wish. I want friendship with our neighbours and not for them to feel obligated to remain in a reluctant union.

Marydoll Sun 07-May-23 20:04:38

I seem to have missed a bit of my post! I am pro Union, but not very enamoured with the monarchy.

maddyone Sun 07-May-23 19:54:43

That’s good to know Marydoll.

Marydoll Sun 07-May-23 19:48:03

It is possible to be pro Union, but not be a monarchist.

Jaxjacky Sun 07-May-23 19:47:47

From what I’ve seen on the news certain areas in Scotland celebrated, similar to the rest of the UK.

We had quite a few down here in the south of England, a lot of them today as yesterday people were watching at home, on their on, or in groups. (It rained all day yesterday here as well).

Fleurpepper Sun 07-May-23 19:40:24

it is very possible to be pro the Union and not a Monarchist, surely. Where do you get the idea that it is not?

But I agree that there should be a Referendum again- but with a clear minimum required (perhaps 60%)- and with clear outlines as to consequences, pros and cons.

The Brexit Referendum was based on mis-information and lies and more lies- this should never be allowed to happena again.

maddyone Sun 07-May-23 19:31:37

I don’t want to force anyone to be in a political Union that they don’t want to be part of. For my part, I’m English and I really enjoyed the coronation.

maddyone Sun 07-May-23 19:30:07

This discussion just makes me feel that Scotland should have another referendum about independence. If the Scots feel so strongly that they don’t want to be part of the Union, what is the point? I’d rather be a smaller country with friendly neighbours than in a union with reluctant people.

Fleurpepper Sun 07-May-23 18:09:53

Actually mentionned on BBC News, that celebrations were not so numerous in Scotland

Aveline Sun 07-May-23 18:01:06

I though Katek made a very pertinent point about those deprived children currently attending a school in Scotland and looking forward to the coronation. Nothing wrong with that. Clearly not everyone was bothered about the coronation but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't have gone ahead or that nobody in Scotland celebrated because, actually, lots of Scots did.

Blondiescot Sun 07-May-23 17:38:18

Our local Aldi still had a stack of bunting, flags etc yesterday - the woman in front of me asked the checkout girl if they were selling many and she said they hadn't sold a single one!

Fleurpepper Sun 07-May-23 17:36:20

Oreo

Today, Sunday is the day when most are having parties, we enjoyed ours immensely.😃🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Glad you did. Are you in Scotland?

Marydoll Sun 07-May-23 17:21:08

Katek, why mention your daughter, is it relevant? I had a similar job as her, so I have direct and personal experience of this. Do you?

I made the point, that in MY opinion, it was a waste of public money. I think we still have free speech in this country, therefore I am entitled to say what I believe.
I was not the only poster, who made this point, so I'm puzzled by the fact that both you and Aveline, continue to address your points to me, personally.

I used the general word one so as not to name any specific poster, but Aveline took it to mean her, came back at me and you of course, jumped in to back her up.

It's becoming rather personal and a tad patronising.

No matter what you post, I will continue to stand by what I posted, in what I think was a polite manner. Just because you think the Coronation was wonderful for this country, doesn't mean we all think that way.
I am sure you will be back to put me right.

I was out and about in Glasgow yesterday. I saw just one house, down at the bottom of Crow Road, with bunting out and a party in progress. Maybe there was a screen somewhere but if there was it wasn't anywhere I was out and about. That was mainly Knightswood, Anniesland, Jordanhill, Partick and Hillhead.
