Straw-like hair

Never had this problem before I started regularly having my hair highlighted. I never bothered with conditioner or "products" but now my hair looks like straw, no shine and just dull.

I read somewhere rinsing with vinegar but do they mean malt or white?? Done the cold water thing with no results. Any recommendations please for a nice shiny head of hair.

Having my hair highlighted has made it dry and more unmanageable. After years of experimenting and splashing out on expensive products that didn’t work I have now settled on Toni&Guy damage repair shampoo and Toni&Guy vibrant blonde conditioner. I wrap in a towel after I’ve washed but never try to rub it dry. Just take the towel off and brush hair and leave to dry naturally. It always looks pretty frizzy once dried but then I use straighteners to tame it a bit and a hot curling brush to style. No other products I find anything else added just makes it worse. It’s always a bit springy the day I wash it but it keeps shape and lasts for about four days. Give a try. Hair is such a personal thing though and what works for one person doesn’t necessarily do the same for someone else but I do find the less product I use the better.

Starrynight49 I almost fell out of my chair when I read that you use Vitapointe! That product originally was a Clairol product that I worked with and after I left the company (in the 70’s) over the years I kind of lost track of it and didn’t know where it went. (Another company bought it from Clairol.)

Vitapointe was always promoted and advertised as a leave-in moisturizer on dry hair for shine. It works! Don’t use too much.

I found it on Amazon - an 8 ounce jar for $7.20! Of course - Amazon has EVERYTHING! I always say, if they don’t have it - you don’t need it.

Just yesterday I was saying “I need to put shine back into my hair.” You saved the day!
Thank you!

I've been bleached blonde for more than 40 years and no plans to go natural. My go to shampoos and conditioners are Ogx shampoo and conditioner with argan oil, or Pantene menopause hair shampoo and conditioner, all available at Tesco's. For added shine Elvive wonder water in an orange bottle, in between shampoo and conditioner stage.

I don’t colour my hair at all but it is dry. It’s also fine so I use a lot of hairspray as well as conditioner and mousse. This builds up after a couple of weeks and my hairdresser told me to use fairy liquid once a fortnight followed by shampoo. It works wonders! Apparently it breaks up the residue that builds up.

I use conditioner and straighteners. I find that straighteners give it shine and stop any flyaway tendency.

I use John Freida products for frizzy hair. Shampoo Conditoner and serum. It really does work for me

PS it costs £15 on top of the bill.

I agree with the comment above, sorry I haven't read all the thread.
After washing, my hairdresser mixes up some sort of serum treatment to spray through my hair, which is blonde and a bit straw like. It's probably a Kerastase product which is what the salon uses. It leaves hair silky and lasts about 2 weeks. I am now on holiday, swimming in the sea and sitting in the sun, and so far my hair is looking ok, 7 washes in.

I'd recommend Aussie 3 Minute Miracle. It made my hair so soft and shiny that even my husband noticed 😆

Kerastase is an amazingly extraordinary line of hair care products.

Most upscale Hair Salons retail their products.

I have been having my hair highlighted for years. I use Tigi bed head"extreme blonde" shampoo and conditioner. I find they are great products and make my hair feel soft and smooth. The price varies but a google search will help you find the best deal. Personally i use Just my look.co.uk. Avon also does a leave in colour protect spray which is very good too.
Hope this helps

I put a drop or two of Argan Oil on my palm, rub my hands together then rub through my hair.
It dries glossy and saves on mousse etc.

No doubt this has been said, but you cannot go treating your hair with harsh products like colour or bleach and be surprised at the straw like result if you do not use a conditioner and the right (gentle) shampoo.
Any good shampoo and conditioner designed for bleached or highlighted hair will do but it must be used regularly.

Try Eubos pink soap. It's much better than shampoos, and soothes psoriasis too.

My water is so hard, that it’s already started three fights this week
(I nicked that line)

It's worth noting that if you live in a very hard water area the minerals in the water can make your hair feel stiff and rough and look dull. As the water dries the minerals are left behind and stick to whatever products are in the hair. They don't wash out easily. I use a vinegar/water mix about once a month to get rid of the minerals and keep my hair shiny and soft, but there are chelating shampoos specifically to do the job.

nuge

Just FYI, here in the States, Olaplex is being sued for false advertising and negligence because of harsh chemicals that damage the scalp and hair.

Thanks, that doesn’t surprise me at all

I have highlights and roots done every 4 weeks and my hair was like that as well but now I only wash the top half of my head and only condition the bottom half to the roots as my scalp can get greasy. I always smooth my hair through when putting on the conditioner never roughing it up and never pile it on my head to dry. I’ve never had trouble since and now I can comb it through lovely.

Greciangirl

I have just googled Olaplex shampoos and conditioners.
There are lots of different ones.

Which should I choose.
I have dyed dark black hair.

Recommendations please.

Olaplex is only recommended for hair which needs its bonds repaired; usually hair which has been bleached to some extent or other, and is breaking/ snapping due to this.
I wrongly assumed that Olaplex was beneficial for all dry / coloured hair - it isn’t.
My hair is curly, long, greying and dyed auburn.
I used Olaplex as ‘recommended’ by Olaplex themselves and it didn’t do my hair any favours at all.
I don’t think that it’s suitable for you at all. I hope that I’ve been of help! smile

My hairdresser told me to just wet my hair and rub/wash out any products but with no shampoo and then put conditioner only on after that. It works well for dry hair as it allows the natural oils to be there and not stripped away.

As I have got older the texture of my hair has changed to fluffy and doing this process stops it looking so frizzy.

It works for me.

I haven’t been to a hairdresser for fifty years and have never washed my hair more than once a week.
I use an olive oil shampoo with no nasty chemicals once a week and Vitapointe leave in conditioner on dry hair.
Used to get Vitapoint from Superdrug for £2.50 but now can only get it from Amazon about £14 for a larger pot but it doesn’t seem quite the same.

I use Head & Shoulders Supreme and White Hair Conditioner. I don't have highlights anymore as I'm mostly light grey almost white on top and darker grey underneath. I know my hair needs washing when the top goes darker. I only wash my hair twice a week unless I'm going out somewhere inthe evening.

I too have had extremely dry hair. I read an article from a top stylist/tricologist. I don’t rub shampoo or conditioner into my hair. I pour into my hands and place it onto my head, pulling downwards. This stops roughening of the cuticles. Then I “pat” dry my hair, again don’t rub the hair with a towel. Try to wait as long as you can before blow drying. Then keep the hairdryer pointing downwards. I use Klorane shampoo and conditioner for weak hair. It’s very gentle. Then Aveda Dark green tube leave in conditioner. It’s really helped my hair.
