Late husband's Birthday - what to do?
Disappearing contributors - part 2
I have just received my car insurance renewal and it is over 50% more expensive than last time.
Does this sound about right? I am with SAGA and drive a car that is ten years old!

I'm with LV and my renewal went from £380 to £590. I shopped around using MSE and found RAC+ at about £390 But I then looked on Trust pilot to see their customer reviews are 1Star (ie bad) whereas LV are 5Star. What to do?
When I received my renewal notice, it was about three times higher than the previous year. I asked my much more clued-up son about this and he went on line, shopped around and found me another that not only increased my no-claims discount but the premium was about the same as it had been with the previous company. The answer is never to accept the first notice, but to look for a better deal. There's almost certainly one out there.
Several times with different insurers a query as to why the premium has increased has resulted in an offer to 'See if we can do better'. If they can't, I go elsewhere. I too drive an old car, so an accident would result in it being written off and my being given about £3.50 - I can't see why I'm asked for a higher premium on that basis.
Many try to take advantage of loyalty, it applies to almost all professional services.
My LV car insurance went down last year. I questioned it but it was apparently OK. Not complaining.
It’s strange because we had LV a couple of years ago. Renewal for 9 year old fiesta was 50% increase, so rang them to discuss, but got nowhere.
Went elsewhere, very easy to find comparisons online.
I’m with LV and we get a small discount because we also have house insurance with them. Last December I phoned them to add DS to my car insurance so had to pay a little extra. Yesterday I had the quote for the next year and it’s gone down by £3!
Thank you Welbeck. I will certainly check out this avenue.
Be careful with your insurance agreeing to accept a lower premium. I have found they reduced the actual insurance details to accommodate this.
Have a look on the Martin Lewis website, over the years I have saved a fortune following his advice.
Each year I go through the process of using at least 3 compare sights, Go Compare, Compare the meerkat which gives other benefits if you buy from them, and money supermarket.
Last year Fully comp, protected no claims, Legal expenses cover with 2 drivers was £112
Also it is worth baring in mind that 29 days before the insurance is due is the optimum time for searching according to the algorithms used to get the best deal 🤦🏼♀️
I had a renewal from Churchill for £300+. - last year was £218.92.
I went on go compare.com and had a quote from Darwin for £234.74, - I phoned Churchill, told them the situation and the very pleasant young lady said 'please hold the line while I see what I can do'. She came back (almost immediately)
and said ' I can offer you £234.72. - It's always worth a phone call, they can only say no. 🙅♀️ xx
Not sure how to find a broker in the UK, but from what posters are saying it might be the way to go.
I've been with the same broker for 30 years. When the renewal comes in I ring 3 other providers for quotes and always find cheaper. I then ring my broker and tell them the cheapest quote and who it's with. They have always matched this cheapest quote.
I include home assistance, (better than roadside), legal expenses, lost keys. Fully comp with no claims bonus. Low mileage of 5000. My husband is a named driver on my insurance which funnily adds £25 whereas I am a named driver on his insurance and this reduces his insurance by £25.
I'd never insure only third party. It's not much cheaper.
I don't do online as if I need help I want to be able to go and speak face to face across a desk.
There does seem to be some loyalty with the broker, my house buildings and contents is with them. I do the same when renewing the house insurance. On occasion they have even dropped their admin fee to beat my cheapest other quote.
For information I drive a 7 year old Toyota Yaris 1300cc. Insurance is £340.
Also car insurance, I understand, is more expensive here in NI because our personal injury pay out is higher than on mainland UK.
AA as brokers have been great over the years care house, contents, but I am an AA member. Its not been the very very vey cheapest But customer service have been both kind and helpful many times. Ie AA as brokers, have sorted problems with insurers.
Yes I do cross check Car insurance with Swinton each year and have sometimes agreed a few quid off with AA.
I do get a bit cross loyalty isn't automatically rewarded its all a stupid bargaining game but thats how it is.
Always check comparison sites. The insurance companies rely on apathy. As a new customer you would get a good deal but there is no value in loyalty nowadays and they fleece their loyal customers to finance the new ones,
I always use a comparison site but if there is only a small saving it's easier to stay put. However lots of things make a difference. I was on my daughter's insurance for years and in the early days she saved a fortune, even though I didn't actually drive her car. Eventually it became more expensive to have me on so I was removed. Last year I had to be put back on as she broke her ankle while up a Scottish mountain and I had to go by train to rescue her and drive her car home, then taxi her everywhere for weeks, including into central London where my car would have incurred emission zone charges. Obviously that all cost her money, but when I renewed my own cover later in the year I saved money because I had access to another car! You just need to check all the options on the comparison site then insure accordingly.
My mileage reduced when I retired so that made a difference too.
Try One Call. I think they give very good prices. Mine was £221 including full ‘premium’ standard road side assistance. Fiesta ‘14. You don’t need to pay a high premium.

I have always had fully comp. maybe now I should go for third party, fire and theft.
Third party etc is often more expensive now as fully comp is “the norm”. I get the Saga letter every year for car/home/travel insurance and cannot believe their prices. Do a quick comparison on the MSE website - they now have one search that covers about 95% of providers.
Try other companies. Iv. Just used saga for half what my usual firm wanted. It’s tedious but they’ve forced us to shop and move
I always use a comparison site, then get on to our insurer, Hastings, who invariably match the cheapest comparable quote. I do find it a bit galling though, as they could have offered this price to start with - maybe next time I'll actually switch to the cheaper company.
British Gas Homecare gave me my best win this year. They sent their usual inflated quote (up 70% this time). I spent about two minutes texting them. Was offered a price just 30% more than last year if I accepted a £50 excess. Said no thank you, we wanted to stick with the zero excess. So the next text said, okay, you can keep the zero excess at the same price as last year. Will this be acceptable? You bet it will!
DH suggested I should have said no, I'd like a 10% discount on last year's price. I'll let him do the negotiating next year.

Direct Line up even though I haven't claimed and been with them for a long time. Cancelled immediately and that wasn't easy. Moved to another with far better premium.
Direct Line will never haggle either. At least you know where you stand. I hate this business of we'll sting you if we can but we'll charge the proper price if you find us out.

I renewed my policy as it was a lot more than last year. I went through TopCashback compare and got a fully comprehensive policy with no voluntary excess for £123.00 and also £45 cash back. New policy was with M&S
