Lace Dresses for evening wear

Hello ladies, I am, unexpectedly, going on a cruise later in the year. In my "cruise" wardrobe, I have 2 lace dresses which I have not used for a while.

They would be very useful as cocktail dresses for some of the evenings - my question is - Are lace dresses now very "old hat"? They are both just below the knee. Thank you.

Thank you everyone for the advice ! The dresses shall come with me. I am arranging to have sleeves put into one of them in order that I do not have to "iron" my arms before going into dinner!

A website I was looking at yesterday had a whole section listed for lace dresses.
Not "old hat" at all.

If you feel good in them, wear them

The 70's love of crochet and lace is back in

I saw a lovely cream crochet (looked like heavy lace but wasn't) dress on a young girl on tv the other day.
Just like one I bought from C&A back in the day 🥰 I had a bag made from wooden beads, sandals with wooden heels and a straw floppy hat to accessorise.
I thought I was the bees knees, straight off the Cadbury Flake advert.🤣

Go for it, as others have said!

One of my favourite dresses for formal nights is a knee length plum and black dress, originally from Debenhams, which I bought in a charity shop for £10!

Enjoy your cruise, LilyoftheValley!

Lace dresses are meant to be worn as fun items, they are not party dresses or tea dresses, that’s old hat. rip out the sleeves, wear with laced boots and denim jacket for everyday wear. I would love a vintage lace dress to alter and wear. I’m a bit old fashioned and wear leggings under all dresses tho. I haven’t got the legs now.
On the cruise I went, we had two formal nights I just wore black trousers and a vintage lace top.

I wore a lace dress to a wedding at the weekend, didn’t feel out of place at all although I’d had it a number of years and had only worn it once to another wedding.

If you like them feel good and feel comfortable in them, wear them. That’s all that matters. I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to dress any longer thank goodness. And in any case who cares what anyone else thinks ?

I love dresses by Bombshell and there is a new range of stunning lace dresses on their website. Sadly, I have no occasion to buy one for.

If you’re comfortable in your lace dresses take them and wear them, I think lace dresses are pretty x

On cruises Ive seen the best and the worst dressers 🤣 ….wear whatever you like, anything goes and retro dresses are very popular. Enjoy …..

Lily, we have had a few cruises, first time I was I a real stew about what to wear on formal evenings. My friend gave me sound advice " just pack a couple of long skirts and a a selection of tops" suited me fine , I prefer full length skirts ot floaty evening trousers, so it worked well for me. There is often sush a fuss about ' formal evenings ' I never take it too seriously now. Wear what you are comfortable in! and enjoy your cruise.

In the past , I've thrown out much loved clothes because they were out of fashion .

I think that lace is perennial and never out of style .

If you like something wear and enjoy it -never mind what's in and out of fashion !

Good quality lace is never out of fashion!

Lace on is very trendy at the moment and a cruise is the natural place to wear it.

Aveline Wed 07-Jun-23 17:59:27

I love lace too but, when I read the post saying lace and pearls never goes out of fashion, Hinge and Bracket flashed through my mind! The dear ladies. So funny. Sadly both died now.

Patsy70 Wed 07-Jun-23 15:23:17

I love lace. Perfect for your cruise, and certainly not ‘old hat’.

Joseann Wed 07-Jun-23 15:11:42

I don't think lace, like pearls, ever goes out of fashion. Your dresses will be perfect.

We sailed on Queen Mary 2 in December. I took my full length lace dress with me and wore it to the formal night. There were quite a few ladies in lace dresses.
Take them and wear them, they are not out of date.

Aveline

Is it one of those cruises where you have to dress formally for dinner? Quite a few no longer require or expect that. I used to enjoy dressing for formal nights on Cunard but since discovering Viking cruises those days are over for DH and I.

Indeed. Viking cruises are great - no dress for dinner faff.
