Idyllic places

Biscuitmuncher’s post earlier today got me thinking about where I could happily spend a couple of hours on a very warm day and where I most definitely wouldn’t want to be. I would really hate to be on a crowded, sandy beach. A nightmare scenario for me even on normal days but in heat? No! Conversely, years ago I recall being somewhere in Scotland, near the Small Glen I think. We stopped by a little stone bridge and had a picnic by the side of a picture perfect stream. We sat, shaded by trees and relaxed listening to the sounds of the water over the rocks. The beauty of that place has stayed with me for fifty years. That would be my ideal place, with no one else, apart from family, anywhere near.
Where would your nightmare and dream places be?

Nightmare would be anywhere noisy and crowded.
Bliss is a little discovered Cornish cove . In the dappled shade and a comfy chair.

SachaMac Thu 08-Jun-23 17:44:32

Nightmare would be places like Skegness, especially on a busy bank holiday day or sitting around a crowded noisy swimming pool anywhere abroad.

Ideal would be walking on the salt marshes in North Norfolk on a nice sunny day or lying on a quiet beach in the Maldives.

My nightmare place would be a crowded city. My dream place is Formby, Merseyside. I get off the train at Freshfield, walk down the road, admiring the lovely houses. Wishing I could win the lottery so I can buy a property there. Then arrive at the red squirrel sanctuary, and walk through the woods. Then onto the sandy beach next to it. Bliss.

SachaMac I have never stayed in Skegness but I have been on a day trip with the family when I once had an early morning business meeting there.
It was early spring, deserted and totally lovely.

SachaMac
One thing the Maldives has but Skegness doesn’t is mountains of plastic waste.

SachaMac Fri 09-Jun-23 14:19:57

NotSpaghetti my experience of Skegness was also a day trip but on a hot bank holiday so very different. I guess many places are best avoided on bank hols!

My ideal place would be laying on my bed in a lovely foreign hotel room ... patio doors open ... curtains blowing, reading a really good book ... knowing the most arduous thing I had to do was have a shower and get ready to go down for a lovely meal with my family smile
A nightmare would be getting on a coach for a long journey and being told the toilet was out-of-order hmm

My idyllic place is the same as Skydancer -
a nice quiet beach with rocky coves and a row boat perhaps a lake or a river .
And :
A walk through woodland listening to birdsong .
A beautiful garden .
A field of wild flowers .
An archaeological site.
Mudlarking .
Fossil collecting .
A field of gentle horses .
A beautiful church smelling of incense with a choir and bells ringing .

And hell has to be a hen party with male strippers ,
Las Vegas , bingo halls and neighbours with loud radios and barking dogs , screaming swearing teenagers on the bus and Glastonbury with the smelly loos and mud ...
I also sat through Mamma Mia with a friend .
I hated it !

On the banks of my favourite upland reservoir; the place to myself, with a fly rod in my hand and trout rising in front of me. Absolute quiet, except for the occasional whisper of my flyline whipping though the air and water lapping on the shore. Will I catch fish? Who cares!
Nightmare? A cruise, or anywhere that I am expected to scrub up well and socialise!

Crowded beach with no shade on a hot day.

Anywhere near a waterfall

The Greek island of Naxos, sitting in a little restaurant with a glass of wine, a lovely meal and my lovely DH watching the amazing sunset. Im so so lucky because I’m actually here now on day 7 of our island hopping adventure! My nightmare would be shopping in a giant Asda 🥴

MiniMoon Fri 09-Jun-23 21:52:25

My nightmare place, The Metro Centre or any shopping mall.
My idyllic place, Craster, and along the coast to Dunstanburgh Castle. Any of the beaches along the Northumberland coast really.

lixy Fri 09-Jun-23 22:05:31

Nightmare -
- anywhere with dogs running unsupervised/loose off the leads.
- anywhere where people shout - House of Commons especially.

Idyll - my own garden when it starts to rain after a dry spell; can't beat that smell of the world being refreshed.

I’ve been to many countries in the world but I’ve realised that all my idyllic places are in the uk.
Watching Paul and Bob fishing in Scotland made me realise this.

Gin Fri 09-Jun-23 22:32:17

Best place picnicking on the cove along the beach from Dunure Scotland.
Worst would be a Greek island ruined by partying Brits and Germans

My idyllic place was an alpine meadow in the Dolomites a few years ago now. There were just the four of us, we’d walked for several hours to get there. It was full of flowers including Martagnon lilies and eidelweiss, marmots were popping their heads out of their barrows and at the far end snow still lay on the mountain slopes.
My idea of hell is anywhere hot, or crowded or noisy.

nexus63 Sat 10-Jun-23 11:43:46

my favourite place is glen coe, during the day it is beautiful but at night to watch the stars and feel a sadness, and feel you are being watched by the clan macdonald, they say the ghosts appear on the 13th of february every year, my nightmare place is any beach in the heat.

knspol Sat 10-Jun-23 11:56:58

Nightmare would be the London underground at peak time on a hot day. Idyll would be anywhere with my late DH.

Tink75 Sat 10-Jun-23 12:07:31

West Dorset every time. Nightmare is the Cinema on a hot day.

lizzypopbottle Sat 10-Jun-23 12:53:39

Glen Trool in midge season would be the worst place. We camped there once during the spring bank holiday and were eaten alive. The tent walls were black with them in seconds of opening the zip and we went everywhere with large towels over our heads. My own garden is my good place.

NotWoke Sat 10-Jun-23 13:10:24

The Seychelles on a deserted beach listening to the waves.

Nightmare place crowded places anywhere anytime

Sharina Sat 10-Jun-23 13:27:53

At St Nectans Glen in Cornwall. Without the hippy day trippers.

Midnightblue Sat 10-Jun-23 13:32:59

I hate having to sit all day in the same airless room eg work training days/conferences.

I loved walking St Cuthbert’s Way, Melrose to Holy Island, though not just one place exactly I realise.

MayBee70 Sat 10-Jun-23 13:40:28

Walking on Crete with the smell of Thyme and the sound of the cicadas. There’s always a slight breeze in Crete which makes the heat bearable. In the UK being at Trebarwith Cove watching the waves break over the rocks.

Caramme Hate to byrst your bubble but your ideal spot is no more. Spring, summer and autumn the area is filled with motorhomes parked along the roadside.
