Idyllic places

Biscuitmuncher’s post earlier today got me thinking about where I could happily spend a couple of hours on a very warm day and where I most definitely wouldn’t want to be. I would really hate to be on a crowded, sandy beach. A nightmare scenario for me even on normal days but in heat? No! Conversely, years ago I recall being somewhere in Scotland, near the Small Glen I think. We stopped by a little stone bridge and had a picnic by the side of a picture perfect stream. We sat, shaded by trees and relaxed listening to the sounds of the water over the rocks. The beauty of that place has stayed with me for fifty years. That would be my ideal place, with no one else, apart from family, anywhere near.
Where would your nightmare and dream places be?

Best place picnicking on the cove along the beach from Dunure Scotland.
Worst would be a Greek island ruined by partying Brits and Germans

I’ve been to many countries in the world but I’ve realised that all my idyllic places are in the uk.
Watching Paul and Bob fishing in Scotland made me realise this.

Nightmare -
- anywhere with dogs running unsupervised/loose off the leads.
- anywhere where people shout - House of Commons especially.

Idyll - my own garden when it starts to rain after a dry spell; can't beat that smell of the world being refreshed.

My nightmare place, The Metro Centre or any shopping mall.
My idyllic place, Craster, and along the coast to Dunstanburgh Castle. Any of the beaches along the Northumberland coast really.

The Greek island of Naxos, sitting in a little restaurant with a glass of wine, a lovely meal and my lovely DH watching the amazing sunset. Im so so lucky because I’m actually here now on day 7 of our island hopping adventure! My nightmare would be shopping in a giant Asda 🥴

Crowded beach with no shade on a hot day.

Anywhere near a waterfall

Greyduster Fri 09-Jun-23 19:51:33

On the banks of my favourite upland reservoir; the place to myself, with a fly rod in my hand and trout rising in front of me. Absolute quiet, except for the occasional whisper of my flyline whipping though the air and water lapping on the shore. Will I catch fish? Who cares!
Nightmare? A cruise, or anywhere that I am expected to scrub up well and socialise!

My idyllic place is the same as Skydancer -
a nice quiet beach with rocky coves and a row boat perhaps a lake or a river .
And :
A walk through woodland listening to birdsong .
A beautiful garden .
A field of wild flowers .
An archaeological site.
Mudlarking .
Fossil collecting .
A field of gentle horses .
A beautiful church smelling of incense with a choir and bells ringing .

And hell has to be a hen party with male strippers ,
Las Vegas , bingo halls and neighbours with loud radios and barking dogs , screaming swearing teenagers on the bus and Glastonbury with the smelly loos and mud ...
I also sat through Mamma Mia with a friend .
I hated it !

My ideal place would be laying on my bed in a lovely foreign hotel room ... patio doors open ... curtains blowing, reading a really good book ... knowing the most arduous thing I had to do was have a shower and get ready to go down for a lovely meal with my family smile
A nightmare would be getting on a coach for a long journey and being told the toilet was out-of-order hmm

NotSpaghetti my experience of Skegness was also a day trip but on a hot bank holiday so very different. I guess many places are best avoided on bank hols!

MerylStreep Fri 09-Jun-23 08:07:00

SachaMac
One thing the Maldives has but Skegness doesn’t is mountains of plastic waste.

NotSpaghetti Fri 09-Jun-23 07:44:35

SachaMac I have never stayed in Skegness but I have been on a day trip with the family when I once had an early morning business meeting there.
It was early spring, deserted and totally lovely.

My nightmare place would be a crowded city. My dream place is Formby, Merseyside. I get off the train at Freshfield, walk down the road, admiring the lovely houses. Wishing I could win the lottery so I can buy a property there. Then arrive at the red squirrel sanctuary, and walk through the woods. Then onto the sandy beach next to it. Bliss.

SachaMac Thu 08-Jun-23 17:44:32

Nightmare would be places like Skegness, especially on a busy bank holiday day or sitting around a crowded noisy swimming pool anywhere abroad.

Ideal would be walking on the salt marshes in North Norfolk on a nice sunny day or lying on a quiet beach in the Maldives.

Nightmare would be anywhere noisy and crowded.
Bliss is a little discovered Cornish cove . In the dappled shade and a comfy chair.

Alnmouth, Northumberland ♥️

I love Northumberland. I would live there if it wasn't so far from my family.

Anywhere very crowded is my personal hell, especially at the sort of event where there aren’t enough smelly Portaloos.

Heaven for me on a hot day, would be a reasonably uncrowded sandy beach, edged with nice shady trees, and a lovely calm, warm sea to cool off in.
So not in the U.K., sadly, and not anywhere I’d be remotely worried about hungry sharks.

When I first became an academic my boss asked me to present a paper in Las Vegas and I thought I would hate the place. As it happened I quite enjoyed the week I was there. Later I jumped at the opportunity to work for a year at uni of Nevada which is just outside the city.

My nightmare would indeed be somewhere like Glastonbury with the mud and the crowds. The loud music would drive me mental.

However I have always enjoyed the bustle of antique markets and auctions. Now I just like to lock my doors and keep the rest of the world out.

Casdon Thu 08-Jun-23 16:23:30

I’ve been thinking about this whilst I’ve been planting my dahlias. My dream would be to be lying on my back on a very slowly moving self propelled daybed looking at the ceilings in the Uffizi Gallery. There would be nobody else there, and it would be in the early evening. Heaven.
Hell is the underground on a Friday afternoon when you have a suitcase.

Norah Thu 08-Jun-23 15:36:04

The Dolomites.

Juliet27 Thu 08-Jun-23 15:30:42

Calendargirl

My own back garden on a pleasant summer’s day, the birds singing, me sitting reading a good book.

A noisy crowded pub on a Saturday night would be my idea of hell.

Same for me!

Juliet27 Thu 08-Jun-23 15:28:29

Oh you’ve reminded me Maddyone of a small flight I once took over Milford Sound on not the best of days. The woman in front of me was so sick and I ended up wishing I hadn’t handed over my sick bag. That was a nightmare.

Sago Thu 08-Jun-23 15:17:01

Anywhere crowded I dislike.
I love the Yorkshire Dales, we can hike for miles and not meet a soul, bliss.

pascal30 Thu 08-Jun-23 14:47:49

The south of France in the mountains just above Lodeve..

crowded trains from London to Brighton on a hot day
