Life’s conundrums

Why is it so easy to fall asleep around 6 after tossing and turning all night - never sleeping for more than half an hour - when you have to be up at 7?
And don’t get me started on which way up buttered toast always lands.
What conundrums have you faced?

Why does it not rain if you have your umbrella with you, but suddenly pours when you have nipped out without it?

And why do accidents always happen at night at weekends when doctors and chemists are closed.

Ditto the dog and the emergency vet who eagerly doubles the price!

Ditto ditto when it’s a Bank Holiday weekend!

Mollygo Wed 14-Jun-23 22:17:39

Why does it always rain just after the window cleaner’s been or just after I’ve washed my car?

biglouis Wed 14-Jun-23 22:33:18

Why does one of the sites I use periodically tell me I am logging in from a computer/location they dont recognise (and make me go through some security hooha) when I am using exactly the same machine in the same location as I did yesterday?

Why does the battery on my camera need changing when I am in the last few shots of a photo shoot?

Mollygo Wed 14-Jun-23 23:15:25

biglouis that logging in thing happens to me too. It also tells me I have just logged in from a place where I don’t live.

Agree with the sleep. Here I am 23.26 and wide awake. But I was on the sofa this afternoon watching something or the other and I was fast asleep - only woke up when my neighbour knocked on the door - I’ll probably get about 4 or 5 hours erratic sleep tonight. Glad I’m not the only one

An old rabbi told me that the reason toast always lands the wrong way up is that you buttered it on the wrong side.

That one, JackyB, always!

Why is the letter "W" in English described as "double U"? Shouldn't it be "double V"?

It is in French!

Glad it’s not just me when annoying things happen.
When one thing leads to another, then another and another….sometimes I feel like I’m in in a Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘em sketch, Laurel & Hardy or Norman Wisdom film. Exasperating.

The two abysses to nowhere. When my crochet hook or knitting needles or pens go down the gap in the settee or when food, no matter how far away ends up going between the gap in my freestanding cooker and the kitchen counter.

Looking forward to what I might find under and behind heavy stuff when I eventually move. When I had electricians in and they moved the very heavy sofa to get to some sockets I found the address book I'd lost, a large Pritt stick tube and a bra! Upside was that the sofa now reclines again as the Pritt stick was jamming the mechanism! As for the bra - I remember removing it when I had shingles as it was rubbing the sore area - about 5 years earlier! blush

I rely on the rain to wash my car - the recent stormy downpours have worked wonders!

Why do my ridiculous dogs shed copious quantities, every day all year, rather than just for new summer coats?

springishere Thu 15-Jun-23 14:13:30

All of these!

Aveline Thu 15-Jun-23 15:26:38

jocork when we moved our old sofa I found a large pile of spat out cat pills!

The Glaswegian version of McPherson's Law covers most of what you have mentioned. It states "McPherson's piece aye lands jeelie-side doon" (McPherson's bread and jam always falls with the jammy side down).

The same sentiment was expressed, according to my father by a professor at the Bute School of Medicine who started the first lecture of term (in 1940) by saying, "Gentlemen, the first principle of immuneology is: If it can go wrong, it will."

You can add vets to the list of those whose services are always desperately needed at weekends and on public holidays, and probably even today, midwives as well. Oh, sorry, someone beat me too it.

If you replace the item that you have been searching in vain for all over the house, you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be staring you in the face when you come home with the replacement.

biglouis and Mollygo, I think I can answer your questions:

When you connect to the internet your device is allocated an Internet Protocal Address, an IP Addess, this address is only
allocated for a short time and after a period of inactivity this address will change, there aren't enough addresses to permanently allocate an address to every device on the internet.

Due to the way the internet works, you are unlikely to be allocated the same address eaach time you connect, if you are lucky you will get an address in your local area, so everything is seamless, but, if your local area is busy you may be allocated an address in a different area, for example, I live just outside Lincoln, but I often get an address in Nottingham.

It's not just your local area that can be busy and cause the issue, your connection request will go through a number of computers to get to your required destination, think of it like posting a letter, it goes through variou sorting offices to get to the addressee, computers are the same, just electronically.

Hope this helps, I've tried to answer your question without being too techical.

Aveline, this made me belly laugh! I had the same with my cats; they each spat them out in their fluffy bed where I only found them on a weekly basis when I hoovered said bed. They learned from each other and got me every time!
Cats are smart cookies!

Where do odd socks go ? I look everywhere for them but they just disappear forever.

They don’t really “disappear.”
They come back identifying as spare Tupperware lids which don’t match any Tupperware boxes I have ever had.

Aveline Thu 15-Jun-23 17:53:43

Gosh. Hoovering cats's beds. I'm impressed. My cats tend to sleep in places all over the house rather than have proper beds. Needless to say I've bought many lovely beds for them to ignore over the years!

Lyndylou Thu 15-Jun-23 20:08:58

BigBertha1 I'm so glad it's not just me. A couple of weeks ago I ordered a Ring doorbell plus chime thinking I had a good price. I had not had a chance to unpack it and it had dropped 30 pounds. I wouldn't even have known but I went to DGS's house to baby sit and he wanted to see which bell I had ordered!

Then last night I ordered a cushion on sale and today it is eight pounds less! hmm

Quichette Thu 15-Jun-23 20:11:59

My missing socks come back in the form of cheap wire coat hangers that breed mysteriously in closets.

midgey Thu 15-Jun-23 20:15:21

Why is there always a lot of month left when I come to the end of my money.😡

Why is the letter "W" in English described as "double U"? Shouldn't it be "double V"?

Because there was no letter U in the Latin alphabet. The sound was represented by V and they where allographs until roughly the end of the 14th century.

Thank you for that explanation. It explains a lot - now I know why I sometimes get told someone’s logged into my account from several counties away on my machine 😃
