How do you organise your wardrobe?

Three short sections containing shirts/tops, trousers and suits separately. One long section for formal dresses and coats. Works wonderfully for me.

My wardrobe has a ‘short’ side with shelves under it where I hang shirts, tops and underneath bags including a carryon bag and my holiday wash bags. The other part is long dresses, short dresses, jeans, trousers and a couple of jackets and shoes in the bottom. My other coats and jackets live in the spare room wardrobe.

Currently my wardrobe is divided into summer and winter clothes, but other than that it is a jumble, apart from a few posh frocks (probably never to be worn again) which are stored in hanging clothes bags. Do you organise by colour? Separate clothes into dresses, trousers, shirts, skirts, etc.? Hang tops that go with bottoms together? There are endless permutations, but before I have a go at reorganising everything, I'd like to hear how others have done it.
