Our main problem with bins awaiting emptying is foxes. A neighbour's cctv camera picked up footage of someone putting their bin out and in less than 5 minutes, a fox appeared, jumped up at the bin and knocked it over. 2 more foxes appeared and pulled out the entire contents and scavenged for food scraps. The mess was unbelievable. The only solution is to run out with your bin the moment you hear the bin men coming.

Tiny flies can get in the tiniest places.

I once tied up the bag of our main kitchen bin and put it in the wheelie bin. All normal and as per usual. Then next time I went to put something in that wheelie bin, everything in it already had been completely shredded! I was sure I had put tied bags in there!

I reckon a mouse had got into the kitchen bin after somebody had left it lidless and was still in there when I tied the bag up.

…a day or two ago I put a very few scraps of meat in the kitchen food waste bin, instead of in a bag in the freezer, until the night before the bin men come. Which is on a Monday morning, so last night, while dh was doing the general bins, I did the food waste, as usual.
Opened the kitchen bin - maggots!!! Yuck! The bin is never left open, so how some horrible fly got in there to lay eggs, I have no idea.

Anyway, in future it’s going to be back to any such things strictly going in the freezer until the night before.
