How do you revive squashed bread?

This is going to sound like "first world problems" but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has a similar problem and if so how to solve it. I regularly order a loaf of sliced multi-grain bread on my supermarket delivery. Unfortunately the packers routinely put heavy items on top of the loaf so that by the time of delivery (midday-1pm) the bread is squished, sometimes only in parts, but occasionally almost completely, so that the slices are about half the normal size. The delivery guys are sympathetic and say it's not them, and if it is really bad they credit me the cost of the bread. There is little point in sending it back as I would have to go out and buy another loaf. I am very happy with the supermarket otherwise and do not wish to change. It is not a big enough problem to have a go at Customer Services, there is after all no danger to one's health and it's a minor irritation in the scheme of things. I just wonder if it is possible to stretch the slices back into shape? Internet searches on this subject are not helpful, the results mainly concentrate on how to revive stale bread, which is not the same thing. Does anyone have any suggestions? As I say, it's no big deal really, but I am just curious!

I don't know if this would work, but I did find this for you on a forum

" it’s easy to do you take a little bit of salt sprinkle it in the bag and I use a hair sprayer but one spray of lukewarm water put it in the microwave and Bam just like new my mom taught me that they used to do it back in her little house in the prairie days when she learned that the Dead Sea was only sick"

You could try it, let us know if it works! (I am reading from that that you put the bread in a bag with a spritz of water, doesn't say how long in the microwave, but I would guess not long or it would go hard. Also if it comes out with a soggy crust, you might need to pop it in the oven for a bit to crisp it up.)

You say it is not a big enough problem to have a go at Customer Services, but I am sure they would want you to get ALL your order in good condition. If it was eggs or tomatoes or cream cakes packed under the tins and squashed, would you still keep quiet? The packers clearly need a bit of extra training if they don't already know that heavy items go at the bottom and lighter ones on top.

I sometimes inadvertently squish a loaf of bread in with other shopping and when that happens, I just put it to one side and it unsquishes itself.

It is worth contacting customer services , I agree it's not a major issue but never the less it shouldn't happen!! A one off is one thing but a regular occurrence warrants a 'complaint' You won't be the only online customer having to put up with squashed bread - not really good enough.

You say it is not a major problem but as it appears to be happening on a regular basis, has inconvenienced and somewhat annoyed you enough to comment on here I think you should bring it to the attention of customer services. There may be many people out there with squashed bread, unable to toast or unable to make a decent looking sandwich so you would be doing them a great favour by letting customers services know, in the nicest possible way of course smile

I ask the delivery person to give feed back. They are really amenable.

If it's sliced, try using a rolling pin very gentle on a few slices then leave them to hopefully bounce back. I'm sure I did this years ago for something I wanted the full size of the slices.

Tescos bring my deliveries and the online order page has an option to click to leave a message for the picker/packer with each item. I write latest date please and don't squash the pack
It is often ok. Tuesday they delivered at 8pm and the best by date was Wednesday. I rang and complained and they refunded it. If I notice things when they deliver the delivery man takes them back but you can't check dates during hastily unpacking from the crate so he can go and do the next deliveries. I wish they still did it in bags as I used those bags for all sorts, bin liners, washed salad etc. Now I have to buy bags!

Tescos used to have the email that said what is being delivered and you could reply to that with complaints but now it is no reply so you need to phone or tweet,.

Have you put a note to pickers to pack bread on top? I do this with eggs. Works most of the time!

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions, very thoughtful and helpful. I shall give some thought to raising it with customer services. Thanks everyone!

Two fixes:
• Just eat it! Sometimes I make a sandwich and use my hand to squish the bread down like when I was kid. Still tastes good.
• Tell your merchant when placing your order - bread must be placed on TOP!! If your bread arrives all squished, then you will decline your entire order.
So there!

I get a refund from Ocado if they deliver squashed bread or squashed anything else. It doesn't happen often. Then I stop off at our Tesco local and buy an unsquashed one - the birds get the squashed one.

I agree with others that you should complain about the poor packing.
