Great to see the BC championed here on GN. And to see how many of us there are both far and near.

Didn't know there was a Black Country day! Bostin aye it?

Its amazing how many people comment how friendly and approachable we are. I love our flag.
I really must visit the Black Country Museum again especially as they have that new street. I get all nostalgic over Hobbs Fish and Chip shop.

I’m an ex-pat - born and brought up in Wednesbury but have lived in South London for the last 60 years. Met my husband at Tipton Grammar School, we came to University in London and stayed here. No relatives left there now but I belong to The History of Wednesbury Facebook site to keep in touch.

I have bought my husband a couple of Black Country inspired t shirts. He has one with a zebra on it. The slogan reads 'Z is for stripey oss'. There is also one with 4 babies crawling across a zebra crossing with the slogan 'Babby Road'.

In 2012 I was living in New Mexico and had to see a GP for some routine meds that I'd run out of. She was a lovely woman who refused payment on the grounds that she'd spent a year in Wednesbury on an exchange programme as part of her medical degree. smile

I bought her a bottle of wine from Walmart instead!

I live in Wolverhampton and I don't think Wulfrunians consider themselves to be part of the Black Country; but then, I'm a Brummie wench so how would I know?!

Get off this thread! Now!!! 😾

Kittylester, are you by any chance the same Kitty who is a friend of Pam's in Appian Close? Apologies if I have the wrong Kitty, it is an unusual name.
Happy Black Country.

Re the map

Brown - Dudley
Orange - Sandwell
Peach - Wolverhampton
Yellow - Walsall

FannyCornforth Fri 14-Jul-23 14:34:51

Riverwalk neither did my Aunty Helen, and she’s the most BC person I know!
(She has the flag on her car 🤦‍♀️)

Here is the map of the BC.
Dudley is said to be its ‘capital’, but Tipton is revered as the most ‘quintessentially BC town’.
My dearest Mom taught there for years, and I can vouch for that.

I went to school in Quarry Bonk, Dudley which is also noteworthy for its bonhomie and eccentricity

Riverwalk Fri 14-Jul-23 14:17:39

My best friend is a Wolverhampton girl - I've just wished her a Happy Black Country Day. She had no idea about the day, or the flag!

kittylester Fri 14-Jul-23 14:11:09

I'm taking offence now fanny. grin

DH went to Birmingham University and, fairly inevitably, came across a fair number of Yammies on his course. We still meet up with one or two of them.

monk08 Fri 14-Jul-23 14:06:39

Yes you're right Fanny Black country folk are very friendly much friendlier than were I was originally from Solihull.

Kate1949 Fri 14-Jul-23 14:01:27

I've posted this on another thread but it's relevant to this one. Last night in a Black Country pub, a young lady almost bumped into me and said 'Sorry babbie' grin I've been called bab many times, which I love but babbie is a new one on me.

Callistemon21 Fri 14-Jul-23 12:59:09

I've only been to Derby once, I'm surprised it's unfriendly.

FannyCornforth Fri 14-Jul-23 12:54:27

Our tawny owls nearly went to live at Dudley Zoo, but my parents knew that they could look after them just as well, if not better.
So they did 🦉

Thanks Kitty and Calli
Black Country folk do tend to be incredibly friendly.
When I moved here, I was surprised how rude stand offish a lot of people were, especially in pubs.
And I’m not an outgoing sort by any means

Fanny we usually go at least once a year looking forward to see the new street, will probably take the grandsons in the holidays along with their usual Dudley zoo trip.

One of my early memories is of riding on the elephant at Dudley Zoo.

Callistemon21 Fri 14-Jul-23 12:36:58

Enjoy your day, hope it's not raining there

From your neighbour smile

kittylester Fri 14-Jul-23 12:19:48

One of my favourite sons in law is a Yammy. He didn't know there was a day.

FannyCornforth Fri 14-Jul-23 10:26:23

Thank you eazybee!
I’m actually an ex-pat too (up the road in Derby)
But I’m BC through and through.
I’d love to move back, but moving is such a hassle at the moment, and the healthcare, which my husband is reliant on, is absolutely brilliant here.

Oh monk! Poor cat!
The cat in the picture is rather less unimaginatively called Sylvester

monk08 Fri 14-Jul-23 10:16:57

Fanny that cat is the image of one my parents had he was called soona or as my mother would say sooner he's gone the better she wanted a dog.😀

eazybee Fri 14-Jul-23 10:11:07

Happy Black Country Day from an ex-Wulfrunian!

FannyCornforth Fri 14-Jul-23 10:09:51
