I’d thought it was the only remotely posh thing about my family, too shock

Kate1949 Mon 07-Aug-23 17:28:42

Amazing.

They found the family grave for me. I thought is was just ours but it was a second hand grave and had 400 other occupants!

Kate1949 Mon 07-Aug-23 16:12:09

Thats interesting MayBee.

Parts of Hockley (Birmingham) are lovely. The Jewellery Quarter is in Hockley and there are nice pubs and bars.

My family are buried at Warstone Lane cemetery. They do really interesting tours of that and Key Hill cemetery.

Cathy come home was mostly filmed in London. Back to back house scene was filmed in Hingeston st Brookfields Brum.

It’s the street next to where I lived as a child.

It’s the Hockley where Cathy Come Home was filmed. It took me right back to my childhood in the back to backs in Brum. The National Trust back to backs in the city centre are like palaces compared to the ones I grew up in! There’s an area of Nottingham called Hockley, too. Mind you, my Hockley is now called Newtown and it’s as grim now as it was then!

Whiff Mon 07-Aug-23 06:54:32

MayBee if you mean Hockley in the West Midlands. Wasn't a nice place when I was growing up in the black country. There is another Hockley think it's down south somewhere.

MayBee70 Sun 06-Aug-23 23:41:39

I loved the Kathleen Dayus books about growing up in Hockley.

Kate1949 Sun 06-Aug-23 23:17:18

Yes Whiff. How sad. We visited there once. It happened with a pub near us. Sold. They couldn't get planning permission for what they wanted. Pub burned down.

Whiff Sun 06-Aug-23 22:20:21

Funny how the Crooked House pub has just been sold and now it's burnt to the grown.πŸ€”

I like that Kate πŸ˜„

I’ve just WhatsApp my sister in Italy and she says her office was very near Needless Alley. If you look on Google maps they show a photo of the Alley now, which looks a bit swish.

Kate1949 Mon 31-Jul-23 16:16:20

That's interesting Kate. My DH calls Needless Alley Unnecessary Street.

NanKate Mon 31-Jul-23 11:17:58

News folks for those who come from Birmingham and The Black Country.

Yesterday Sunday 31 July on BBC Sounds 'Open Book' DH tells me two authors were interviewed who have written books, all set in Birmingham inter-war time. DH knows I would be interested being a Brummie.

They are Natalie Marlow who has written ''Needless Alley' the first in a new crime series which now sits on my Kindle waiting for me to start reading! Looking up where Needless Alley is, I find it is just a little way from The Burlington Secretarial College where I went when I was 16 years old!

I haven't as yet researched the other book 'Hokey Pokey' by Kate Mascarenhas, which I think could be spooky!

Anyway I thought some of you might be interested as it could be on 'your patch'.

Suki My mom taught at two places in Tipton in the mid 80s - early 90s.

One was called Batman’s Hill, I think. Could that be the same school?

She also taught at a special unit for school aged girls who had had babies.

It was the first of its kind in the UK, at least.

Suki70 Sat 22-Jul-23 19:10:57

Did anyone here go to Tipton Grammar School?

FannyCornforth Sat 22-Jul-23 12:15:56

Yes, she actually is, isn’t she!
Her winning question was about Eleanor of Aquitaine, who she is also related to

She must be famous, I knew who she was instantly! πŸ˜€

I was on a group on FB where some US folk were moaning about the fact that their first Millionaire on WWTBAM went to a posh school.
You can imagine their reaction when I told them about Judith, and her being the cousin of Queen Camilla!

Just remembered, not really famous at all, but I was just surprised - Judith Keppel

Congrats Whiff!

Just found out my children's old school Ridge primary has won the Black country school games championship. It was a lovely school at the time my children where there it was the smallest school in Dudley brough. Within walking distance from where we lived. Congratulations to the children who took part. πŸŽ–οΈ
