Perfect time to visit the Alps or the Jura mountains- gorgeous weather, lots of lakes, river swimming and superb municipal pools and water parks- and it always cools down at night.

It was reported today that there are forest fires in the Alps and that villages have been evacuated, very worrying.

Is this unusual, Fleurpepper?

There has been on forest fire in the southern alps, near the Italian border. Terrible, but fairly quickly controlled and now being monitored.

All fires are forbidden, and there is plenty of water around in case and superb fire services. Not unusual in Summer, but always very limited because very quickly tackled.

Very hot again, but always below 30 and always cool at night.

We just NEVER holiday abroad in July or August, I’m bloody awful in the heat or extreme cold !

No. I visit the Middle East annually and these are regular temperatures there.

I would never go to a hot country at the height of summer whatever the temp. When I have been to the med it was always in May or October much more comfortable.

Not for me Thankyou. I didn’t know what to do with myself for those two 40 degree days last year. I prefer spring or autumn weather.
I wouldn’t book to go abroad at this time of year, but of course us retirees do have the choice as families don’t.

It is unbearable in Malta at the moment. I’ve lived here over 40 years but this year the heat is too much. 🥵

OMG! And you're on an island which should benefit from sea breezes. Can't begin to think what it must be like in inland Southern Italy. Take care of yourself, and I hope it cools down soon.

Used to holiday in the Caribbean several times a year and always loved the coolness of the trade winds. It could get hot, hot, hot though. We could tolerate it in our younger days but not anymore. Good old blighty for our holidays now.

Georgesgran - Barcelona is predicted to be in the 20⁰s for the next couple of weeks.

Can I just say - 34⁰ is very different to 44⁰ - at 44 there is no real "picking the cooler times of day" to do things.
If it's 44 in the daytime it's unlikely to drop much below 34 at night.

I wouldn't be booking a trip right now to an area predicted to be in the 40⁰s.

This heat definitely puts me off going to any of the countries involved in these dreadful heatwaves. I'd rather go to Scotland.

Yes it would, if I "did" holidays abroad I'd go in May.

I worry about it tho, yes all those driven to starvation by floods or OTOH unable to grow crops.

We’ve been lucky in the Algarve this year, certainly not as hot (so far) as the rest of Europe. Most Portuguese people and tourists seem to wear hats here, come to think of it DD doesn’t but she has a healthy head of very thick hair. We’ve been out this evening to eat and because there’s been heavy cloud all day, it’s the first time I haven’t bothered to take a hat with me. DH can’t be persuaded to wear a hat except in the pool and yes he’s had several skin lesions removed. 🤷‍♀️

I expect if you'd already paid for your holiday you would go because I don't think your holiday insurance would pay out if you cancelled.

My hubby said he heard on the TV that if you can prove to your insurer that you have an illness or disability that worsens in high temps then they will help you out.

If I had a European holiday booked, I’d still be going! I hate wearing a hat in the sun, just makes my head all sweaty and horrible.

I’m on holiday in the Algarve and it’s grey and cloudy with odd spots of rain but pleasantly but not overly warm with little wind.

I’ve always wanted to go to Italy one day but always thought I would go in April or October. I am not a sun worshipper and very fair skinned and burn easily so Spring or Autumn temperatures would probably be near our average summer temperatures.

Yes, and wildfires are also becoming regular events. The last year we were in Tavira, a wildfire came so close to our property it burnt down half the adjacent olive grove. We had bags packed and loaded into the car, ready to evacuate to a coastal hotel just over the Spanish border. I'd even phoned to book a room. Fortunately, the wind changed, and our property was spared. Sadly, it's just going to get worse.

We usually go abroad in June and September so we get lovely weather maybe up to 34 but we can cope with that with plenty of parasols, hats etc and air con of course.

We went to Malta once at end of July and it was unbearably hot. Never again.

I read that people are cancelling their foreign hols due to extreme heat so it will be good for UK holiday bookings.

I wouldn't plan a European vacation for high summer, but then I have the luxury of an open schedule. For families with children, this is their only available time.

I do find on holidays, though, that you can time your touring around the hottest part, or take a slower pace. Unless you planned on a trekking or biking holiday!

As for hats, I'm a non-wearer. I have a lot of hair and I find hats just make me feel hotter, even if they are straw hats with ventilation.
