Is Summer over?

It’s been a lovely day here in Foxyland, - sunny but with a pleasantly fresh breeze. But even at its warmest there seemed to be an undercurrent of Autumn approaching. It’s as if the seasons come earlier these days- that very hot early Summer a month or so ago and now it’s beginning to turn even although it is still July.
The evenings are getting dark that little bit earlier too.
Not that I mind! Even if we have an Indian Summer (to prove me wrong) I still don’t think we’re likely to suffer another heatwave.
But watch this space ☀️☀️☀️ hmm

It was 14 degrees and pouring when I went out today at 2pm. (Somerset). An hour later the car registered 18 degrees in sunshine. Not that it felt warm, the wind has been bitter. I’m a sunshine person, not at all happy with the odd glimpse the last few weeks. Can only hope later in the month is better and it carries on into September or I’ll be a very grumpy soul. .

Autmn and summer seem to have changed place in recent years. July and August are cold et and miserable followed by glorious hot dry waether that lasts well into October.

I am an Autumn lover. summer is boring. I resent getting the less interesting parts of Autumn in July and then having to wait until November for the glorious leaf change and drop.

South east foxglove. Horrid yesterday, much brighter todsy, typical british summer 🥺

I’d just be happy with bright days with a temperature of around 23/24 c.
Comfortable for most and no coats and heavy shoes needing to be worn.
As some others have said we get months of cool
/cold weather a few weeks of sun isn’t much to ask.

Its only 6 pm and getting dark!

Wherever are you Silverlining ? Or was that written on a very dark, wet day?
I can still walk the dog without a torch at 9.30 (Home counties)

Chilly northerly wind today.

You’ll probably get a lovely warm September. From distant memory that seemed to happen after a cool Summer. I hope we don’t get the blazing hot Summer they had in Europe here but that is what they are predicting. Mind you, they wouldn’t get any medals for these predictions and they are more often wrong than right. I remember we went to a talk by a meteorologist once and someone in the audience asked if they ever considered just looking out of the window. Got a laugh if nothing else !

Acording to the BBC weather center the NW is going to warm up a bit next week - into the 20s. This wet weather has benefitted the garden but makes the weeks grow. My gardener came today to feed the lawns which are looking rather bare in spots.

June was mostly lovely here, but July was very wet. Even a heat hater like me would like to see a bit of warm sunshine before autumn sets in.
So I hope summer is not over.

What a lovely summer so far; if it rains all the time when you are on holiday of course it is disappointing, but how much better to sleep instead of tossing and turning with a fan whirring all night, walk the dogs with a fresh breeze instead of worrying about their paws getting too hot, garden without feeling skin prickle in the heat, and wearing summer clothes without wanting to shower and change about three times a day. This has probably not been everyone's experience, or their particular cup of tea, but it has made me happy!

It’s been very mixed here. We are having more rain than normal during the night which is good for the gardens. We keep waking up to either drizzle or overcast skies but not cold at all. By about 10am it’s up in the 20s, sunny and rather muggy. I have not worn anything with a sleeve for many weeks.

A friend lives in Spain now and came back for a holiday. She posted on FB that she was glad to be back in Spain as they had rain on 13 out of 14 days. I can’t believe that, she must have counted a day as rainy if there was just one spot! I haven’t needed a jacket, an umbrella and I haven’t had to stay indoors. I think she just likes to rub it in about living in Spain. Mind you we didn’t see her posting a couple of months ago when Spain had torrential rain and cars were being washed down streets. 🤣

I hope it’s not over as I am going away to the South Coast with DD and two GC in a couple of weeks.

I love hot/warm sunny weather, if summer is over I shall be really fed up.

Yuk yuk yuk I lovvve summer and we ve had very little so far the thought of winter and even autumn makes me feel quite depressed
Bit selfish Grandma70we only get a few weeks of nice weather every year you have more than three quarters of the year cold cool grey and dull windy rainy and miserable but you still begrudge us a few nice weeks

Its been wet here in Cheshire for weeks but we do get the weather from Wales and Ireland. Managed a non wet golf day on Tuesday and shave a little off the handicap so that's great and I hope for more when I get back to playing a nice flat course in Leicestershire. Wet one today, going to see Oppenheimer at the cinema in Northwich.

Witzend Thu 03-Aug-23 11:42:31

It felt very September-y here this morning - bright and sunny, but with that slight nip in the air.
No longer sunny now though.

Grandma70s Sun 30-Jul-23 10:44:24

I hope it’s over, but I doubt it. I loathe hot weather. Summer can’t be too cool for me!

BlueBelle Sun 30-Jul-23 10:37:48

silverlining minimoon I m with you waiting for it to start
We had about a week last month but it’s been constant strong wind for months and months it’s not even good for swimming sea s just so rough (East Anglia)
Terrible summer

silverlining48 Sun 30-Jul-23 10:31:08

I recall a few days of sunshine a couple of months ago.
Am still waiting for summer, fed up with the endless wind which even if there is a bit of sun takes the warmth away. Wearing long trousers/cardi. South East.

MiniMoon Sun 30-Jul-23 10:02:33

What is this Sumner of which you speak?

Witzend Sun 30-Jul-23 09:44:53

Casdon

I don’t think it’s over, Indian Summer here we come. I bet once the children go back to school the weather will be lovely.

Yes, I bet that’ll be the case.
Though to be fair, the weather here this weekend has been very summery so far - plenty warm enough without being baking hot. We are in the SE though.

CrochetBliss Fri 28-Jul-23 22:01:37

Much better in 20 degrees than in 30!

winterwhite Fri 28-Jul-23 21:45:59

Aug weather is usu broadly similar to July, as February is to January.
I dislike hurrying the seasons along too fast but in recent years have thought they were all starting rather late.

Primrose53 Fri 28-Jul-23 20:29:18

I received a mail order catalogue today saying “soak up the last of summer” and I’ve seen several online ads saying the same.

Sept is usually lovely but of course we don’t get the warm evenings. I have sat out just twice in the evenings this summer!!
