Very strong foreign accents

I say, "I can't hear you", or. "I can't understand you".
Often it is because their phone is on speakerphone and not up to their face.
Sometimes it gets remedied, or I get a different person.

With difficulty.
I put the phone speaker on and ask them to repeat frequently. but it makes calls very stressful

How do folks cope when the phone a help line and a very foreign accent answers? I am hearing impaired so that doesn't help. Today I called Virginmedia and a very high pitched oriental voice answered. I have to guess what they are saying, I do ask them to slow down and speak louder which lasts for about 3 seconds! How do you cope?
