What’s the best way to find someone to play games with my gran?

Hi,

My gran wants to play rummikub in particular and was wondering if there was anyone local who would like to play. She doesn’t have access to a computer or anything so I thought I would ask. She lives in Alness in the highlands.

I am her grandson.

Thanks in advance.

welbeck - I read it as an old person, as in the context, we are on gransnet, and there had been talk of U3A etc.

It’s kind of you to help your gran and Rummikub is a good game. We play a lot. Our u3a (check online) have a group
If you don’t already do you have a game with her ?

Ha no but I heard about it.

She has tried with various devices but they seem allergic to her and develop moderate to severe malfunctions.

If she can get out and about check local care homes or assisted housing to see if there are like minded folk who'd like to play.

Yes wellbeck - I did watch it - scary !!

younger people can be just as dangerous as older ones; see my comment above.
also the phrase, any old person, simply means a random person, it does not mean the person is old.
have you not heard the phrase ?

If you want someone to come to the house PLEASE make sure it’s done through a proper set up, not just any old person coming into her house, which can be dangerous

Good advice
But I had in my images of younger people playing games with grannie.
In my experience, in summer hols especially, there are several younger people who want to play quite a lot of games. As well as older ones of course.

Our area does not have much going on. But in the nearest town, someone set up a regular all year round games group.

BlueBelle

I wouldn’t recommend that Pascal some funny people on that!

Can Nan get out and about ? or is she house bound There will be organisations like Age concern who can put you in touch with police checked volunteers (very important) who do visits to play or chat for an hour or two if she’s house bound
If she can go out then most towns have elderly peoples clubs, often luncheon clubs where they play games afterwards or day centres, groups etc ( local library should have list of groups)

I agree in a way, but there are in my experience mostly really lovely people, who might be able to make suggestions for that area.and this situation. I've always received good suggestions when I've asked for recommendations.. I'm not suggesting that she lets a completely unvetted stranger into her house. There might be clubs or groups nearby ..

Try the website Nextdoor if you have one in your area..

Try the local church?
If she has an ipad “Words with Friends”. But only people she knows. It has a chat function.

OP said she does not have access to a computer.

Sorry to duplicate pandapatch. Still double the suggestion makes it doubly worthwhile!

Shelflife Mon 07-Aug-23 15:09:36

Wise words welbeck!

eGJ Mon 07-Aug-23 15:08:56

Is there a U3A near your gran? Our U3A has two Rummikub groups, and other board games.

welbeck Mon 07-Aug-23 14:27:53

Foxygloves Mon 07-Aug-23 13:42:44

Have you tried your/her nearest library? Or your neighbourhood Facebook page?
