I spotted this on Facebook so thought I’d share.

I’ve never met a boring gardener.

Thanks Merlotgran. After the last 18 months, I love a boring day

Exactly - just sailing along on calm waters, these days. That peaceful feeling of being content and watching the world go by - is so precious.

I live my life to be boring! All I want is a quiet, predictable, non-eventful life. Painting, reading, puzzling, photographing, walking and crafting as and when I feel like it. I live alone (apart from my ancient pooch), and can't think of anything better. In fact, I absolutely detest it when I have to attend an event. My DS lives in Australia, and we message often, but he must get so tired of reading, 'Oh, everything is much of a muchness", whenever he asks me what I've been up to! Lol!

I love Wendy Cope.

That sums up my life including the yesteryear. I have recently been subjected to some really toxic behaviour by a family member who for some years I was estranged from. I just sat there thinking, "I just don't need this bullshit." I will be taking a step backwards and this poem reminds me of exactly why. Now, I am just going to get my gardening gloves on!

I prefer a balance in life. Being a writer, even of that kind of ditty from Wendy Cope or Pam Ayres, can't be without its stresses. My SiL is an author and her life is high stress a lot of the time.

I too have had lots of excitement in the past - and most of it has been the wrong kind. How wonderful to live peacefully, quietly, and without the stress and anxieties of previous years. Gratitude doesn't even begin to describe it.

My garden gets 30 minutes of my attention per week.

Today I have been absorbed in the minutiae of Deprivation of assets by those on means-tested benefits, and the rules on Deeds of Variation of a will. Never a dull moment.

The poem echoes my thoughts entirely, so thanks for it.

I've had lots of excitement and disappointments so the quiet life in my home and garden is the peace I need now.

My garden is full of change, plants blossoming, seeding, green growth and life and colour. Wildlife in my little plot - a frog now and then, a hedgehog, bees, butterflies, birds and a fox who basks in the sun sometimes....love it all. Not boring.

No, if you like gardening then I can quite well see that you will never have met a boring gardner, but I have!

I detest gardening and love housework, but am seldom allowed to talk about the glories of polishing windows and floors.

This made me chuckle because last Saturday I went to a local allotments’ produce show. I was introduced to a woman who had won an awful lot of prizes so when she joined us for a cuppa I thought I’d be in for some decent gardening chat and interesting tips.

Instead, she told me she hated the feel of soil so wore two pairs of gloves, 😮 her husband did all the digging and she actually preferred housework! 🤣🤣

She clearly had me marked down as a boring gardener.

She’d have been right. 😂😂

My sentiments exactly, except that I leave all the gardening to the beloved DH...

You can talk to me about housework. At least windows and floors don’t die under my care!

Wendy Cope is wonderful. Her poems are so clever but so accessible.
And it so happens that she and I were born on the same day! I'm tempted to write her a fan letter.

LOVE IT! Thanks, MerlotGran. Wendy Cope is brilliant.

Love this poem🤣🤣🤣

Lizzie44 Wed 23-Aug-23 12:33:03

Yes, lovely poem, and yes, boring is good. I long for a return of the boring after several weeks of distressing alternatives, including a number of friends and neighbours falling ill and/or receiving unwelcome diagnoses, then a local thatched roof house fire (mercifully no casualties), and this afternoon a hospital appointment for me for a CT scan. I hope soon to be able to answer the "what have you been up to" question with a cheery "nothing much, justpottering about..."

HelterSkelter1 Wed 23-Aug-23 12:29:29

Love it. I must read some more Wendy Cope she sounds like my sort of person.

Sawsage2 Wed 23-Aug-23 12:25:48

I prefer the Pet Shop Boys song 'Being Boring'

Aveline Wed 23-Aug-23 08:48:51

My mind goes blank as soon as anyone asks what I've been up to!

Smileless2012 Wed 23-Aug-23 08:43:15

That' great. Thank for sharing smile.

Mollygo Wed 23-Aug-23 08:28:42

Love it. People don’t have to have anything really exciting to say. Just keeping in touch is enough.

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 23-Aug-23 08:11:10

Love it
