Insurance costs when you go cruising overseas

We always insure - not worth taking the risk.

We always insure, fully and always have done. A friend of ours four years ago fell badly in Greece and had to have an air ambulance back to the UK, his insurance covered the thousands it cost.

I have travel insurance as part of a deal with my M and S credit card. It won’t be valid after I’m 80 so I’ll need to find something else. I’ve never had a serious illness on holiday thank God but needed to see a doctor on a cruise a few years ago. This involved several visits, almost daily, and medication. The insurance company reimbursed me a few days after I got home. Worth every penny.

We cruise with Saga who provide good cover at reasonable price. They will not let you travel without insurance and I wouldn’t want to anyway. Too risky. So easy to have an accident or fall.

Travel insurance is compulsory on most cruises now and evidence of this is required.
Mind you, my husband and I went to visit our daughter (who lives in France) for just three days. He fell ill with heart problems and was hospitalised. The cost of medical repatriation was £6000. His travel insurance did not cover his heart so we took a chance. Stupid really!

I thought Saga included the insurance on all holidays. I did go on one some years ago, but I didn’t like the entertainment, however was picked up from home and it was all inclusive, just looked how much it would be for me as a solo, I could almost buy a new car, hard to justify the prices.. So I’ve looked at Cunard again and even with the high insurance I will do it. Wouldn’t dream of travelling ever, without insurance. It’s false economy to take a holiday without cover.
