King Charles- One Year On.

So a year has passed since the death of Queen Elizabeth 11.

That news generated much discussion on GN, and we wondered how Charles would fit as King. Big shoes to fill.

Well., it all seems to have gone pretty well. He and Camilla stepped into their new roles with apparent ease, bringing a new informality but still retaining dignity and tradition. Ably supported by the Wales, Anne and the Edinburghs.

I think the late queen would be proud and relieved.

85 million to 125 million

Why?

Grany Fri 08-Sept-23 18:49:25

Who says they do not have political power Charles sees more cabinet papers them many politicians why would he need to know if they weren’t political
There is also lobbying of ministers to get what they want.
And Kings Consent remember that see legislation before its passed, to see what benefit them to see what they can get.

They as public servants paid from the public purse are not accountable, exempt from the freedom of information act. Makes you wander what they have to hide.

Andrew in his job as don’t know what is hidden from view until 2065

An historian wants to write about Andrew but can’t gain access to anything from royal vaults.

Charles had 45% pay rise from 85 to £125 for 2025
Dodged inheritance tax.

Monarchy are a waste of space and money

They are no better than anyone else a lot worse.

Abolish the monarchy

Snap, Callistemon21. Being a stable presence in a very uncertain, scary world.

I’m not sure what job they are doing great at. A couple of ok speeches? Wearing a kilt?

Jaberwok Fri 08-Sept-23 17:21:12

I think both the King and Queen are doing a fantastic job. I like Queen Camilla, a down to earth sensible lady whom HM adores and who clearly adores him so much more suited to this position than the late Princess of Wales. Yes,they're a great couple, God save them both, and God bless the Prince (and Princess) of Wales.

Charles seems to be fine as King, but I find it difficult to accept Camilla as queen. She’s no more a queen than I am.

Apart from the tiny fact that she is married to the King and was crowned Queen earlier this year.
No, no difference at all. confused

I was married to a scientist. It doesn’t make me one.

^Opening things^

You mean like Parliament, addressing the Bundestag in German, meeting other Heads of State etc?

Do you mean he opens doors for them? Or opens doors for cordial relationships with other countries when our politicians seem hell-bent on messing them up?

🤣
Well someone from this country has got to behave with a bit of decorum abroad!

I really can't say I've noticed. Things go on much as normal. None of them really impact on my life, or the lives of most people.

But that means he's doing a good job! And the continuity has been seamless which is what I like about our system of government.

He has not been controversial, interfered (although he may have had plenty to say during his audiences with the Prime Ministers), done what is expected of him as Head of State of a Constitutional Monarchy, supported by those who are working Royals.

Hang on since when has the absence of something proved its worth?
If Charles hadn't been there, if in fact there hadn't been a monarch since I was 7 would things have been radically different. I don't think so.
So all it proves really is that for over 70 years we've been paying out for an irrelevancy.

Not like you not to know the facts Glorianny 🤔

You must know what the function of a Head of State in a Constitutional Monarchy entails.

Yeah opening things and ensuring his (or her) personal circumstances are not impacted by any HR or tax legislation.
As I said what would have been different without them?

"When a village feels hunger, the Chief is the first person to tighten their belt."

Not seen a lot of belt tightening with this lot,

I think that means the government as our H of S is apolitical.

Not a lot of people know that!
Apparently

Parsley3 Fri 08-Sept-23 16:02:16

So far, Charles has done nothing that would frighten the horses and so I'd say that he has made a good start. At the moment though I haven't caught up with my queens and still think that title refers to the late monarch. I expect I will make the transition when Camilla has a higher profile.

Ziplok Fri 08-Sept-23 14:32:35

They seem to be getting on with it very well.

If it's irrelevant to me whether he is there or not it's quite difficult to describe that as doing a good job.

specki4eyes Fri 08-Sept-23 11:17:39

Even though his accession was dependent upon the sad (but inevitable) demise of his mother, I could not wait for it to happen! He is essentially a good man, a principled human being and brings so much to the role of monarch; he's not reticent about voicing his opinions and putting his efforts into the support of those issues he champions. He never hides from dissenters, turning a blind eye and ear to vociferous anti monarchy protesters. Why? He doesn't have to! He could just sit back and enjoy his latter years and the privelige of his inherited position. I'm glad he can now do the job for which he has patiently waited all of his adult life.

Callistemon21 Fri 08-Sept-23 11:02:24

What impact did you want an apolitical Head of State to make on your lives in a Constitutional Monarchial system?
🤔

LauraNorderr Fri 08-Sept-23 11:01:07

I’m very happy with our current monarchy. All doing a good job.
