Being a prefect (boys and girls) in Year 6 (top juniors) meant, among other tasks, washing up staff cups in the staff room.
Looking at the way I’d choose prefects if that was part the job, I think we were the people who could afford to miss the first part of the lesson and catch up easily.
Our prefects are voted for by peers, though staff have the final say, after some children were found to be using dubious methods to ensure they got votes.

We had to run a dinner time club for the younger girls at some stage as well - as I recall my History Club had three participants at the height of its popularity. The real power lay with the 12 or so members of “the committee”, including the head girl and her deputy, handpicked by the headteacher and well-behaved upper middle class girls every one.
