A boiling water tap
Pop up plugs
Blogs
Artificial grass
Nylon
What can you add which the world can live better without?

Maybe we should say "follow on formula" - no need for that!

I would say baby feed formula but there is a justification even for that.

Yes, my DD only thrived on formula.

Yes, I couldn't breastfeed, due to being on long term steroids

A lot of babies wouldn't have survived without formula milk.

The Atom bomb
Disposable nappies
Sky scrapers or buildings higher than 4 storeys
Melbourne is getting more and more like Beijing every day. Quite hideous.

Thanks Call

Where do all those nappies - the young girl opposite, fills a pink bin bag with used nappies and leaves them by the gate for collection. I’m curious to know how they are disposed of.

They have yellow bags here for clinical waste which includes disposable nappies, incontinence pads etc.

Reminder to self - must update the other thread re bins.

The Internet!

How would billions of people have communicated in the covid lockdown. How would vulnerable people got essential food etc etc etc.
If you don’t need the internet, why do you use it ?

About toothbrushes, when I was in India years ago there was a caste (as I understood it) devoted to preparing little bunches of twigs that were used as toothpicks and to clean your teeth. Excellent idea. Probably a bit like pine chopping boards that have natural disinfectant qualities, or that might be an assumption too far.

Every invention has positives and negatives, even the atom bomb as it ended a war and has given the world atomic energy.

Each new invention in medicine, in producing energy, space exploration all being positives.

Every positive has a negative, every negative has a positive…

Stupid TV adverts. especially those with prancing people
Beligerant Unions.
The Labour and SNP parties.
Gameshows on TV'
Covid
Big brother and other like programmes
There are many more, but this is enough for now, and you will no doubt have realised by now, that I do not suffer fools gladly.

5G
Beauty pageants for children.
Landmines.
Smart appliances, anything one needs an app to operate.
"Planned obsolesence" in appliances that pack up after the guarantee expires, or purposefully have parts that one cannot replace.
Nutella
Pesticides (DDT was the worst) and Roundup
High fructose corn syrup
All synthetic sweeteners, aspartame, acesulpham, sacharin, sucralose etc.

You can get toothbrushes made of bamboo, but I tried one once and it was a horrible feeling in the mouth. So I reluctantly went back to a plastic one.

I could (and can) do without a television but I'd be in a right state without a bra.

What is a pop-up plug?

I can't think of anything that is totally pointless; every invention has its good and bad applications. It is more about the way we thoughtlessly exploit them. Presumably the first weapons were invented to protect families from wild animals; it was when humans decided to use them against each other that they became bad.

The first plastic was patented in 1862. Scientists were trying to invent substitute materials to stop the wholesale slaughter of elephants for their tusks to make piano keys and billiard balls, and the slaughter of turtles and tortoises to make hair combs.

If it hadn’t been for a camera phone this disgraceful behaviour by the Met police wouldn’t have been reported.
Another post with lack of critical thinking

Don’t be so bloody rude!!

If it wasn’t for camera phones the craze for gangs of school kids and other bullies beating the hell out of others and posting said videos to Facebook and Instagram etc wouldn’t happen!

Do some critical thinking of your own.

Move to the Moon and ruin that, too? I think we need to clean up our act down here. Yes, it's ironic that we are using the very things that many of us decry in order to post these messages, but that's how our lives get infiltrated

Bijou Thu 21-Sept-23 16:02:59

It would take too long for me to make my list.but at the time it is TV ads encouraging people to buy unnecessary things such as laundry products when all one needs is soda crystals. Little detergent and white vinegar

4allweknow Thu 21-Sept-23 15:53:41

Skydancer. toothbrushes were made from.wood and had animal hair bristles. Can remember them early 60s. Doubt they'd still exist.

NotSpaghetti Thu 21-Sept-23 15:21:53

That was to pce612, growstuff.

I thought I was being helpful and just explaining something!
