Isn't it marvellous summer is over!

I am sitting in the kitchen looking out of a large window, watching th trees swaying in the breeze, with just a hint of yeloow about them.

The rain is sluicing down, I can hear it as it hits the windowpanes. and the water is dripping off next door's roof. The lawn is completely green again.

After all those windless relentless days of sun and no movement, it is lovely to see nature alive again.

Come the weekend I will start wearing winter clothes and we will stop eating salads and return to soup, sandwiches and baked potatoes.

Isn't it marvellous that summer is over!

And the heating and electric bills!
We have done some things to mitigate things, but even so..

I read our meters today and when I submitted the reading I found there is over £1000 in our account. Once the heating is switched on it will soon disappear.

Being my colouring I have never been a sun worshipper. I have arthritis which is worse in the winter so I don't relish the cold.
I do wrap up in every way and change my diet so agree on that.
We are on a break in Durham and I have to say I wish I brought warmer clothing to be a comfort in this horrid weather.

After a season that was as untypical as it could be, it is such a relief to be in a season that, so far, has done as it is meant to do.

Our summer clematis has started flowering for the first time this year.
And at last the Cosmos have started flowering.

I suppose it has done what it’s supposed to in the last week if wet, cold and windy is what you mean. Yuck, yuck and thrice yuck.

Part of the reason I am so pleased to see autumn is beccause this summer has been so bad. It is good to see the back of it and to be going into typical autumn weather, rain and wind and trees changing colour.

I found over the summer, the rain and cold, and most of all trees changing colour and blackberries and hawthorne berries in full colour in August utterly unsettling. it was unseasonal weather for summe. I have also had primroses blooming in my garden since July, they do seem to have gone over now.

After a season that was as untypical as it could be, it is such a relief to be in a season that, so far, has done as it is meant to do.

No! I dislike the long, dark days of Winter. It is so interminably long. Autumn, with the beautiful rust colours and dappled sunshine is quite beautiful, but it is short lived. We have cosy evenings with the candles, log fires and slow cooked casseroles, but bring on the Spring - Hellebores, snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils, tulips …..

Kim19 Wed 20-Sept-23 20:34:29

Grey, damp, dim, depressing. How anyone can enjoy that is beyond me. However, forecast suggests possible improvement over the weekend. I also hope for the possibility of an Indian summer. We can but dream.......

Tenko Wed 20-Sept-23 20:31:50

Nope , I hate the winter and the cold and rain . I was born in October but love spring and summer . I’ve just returned from a Greek island and it’s depressing that I have to put away my summer dresses. Roll on a winter sunshine break 👍

I'm the odd one out, as I'm enjoying reading yr remarks about cooler temps as Autumn approaches in the UK.
It's not due here for another month! Cool weather is more than welcome here, as it's currently mid-afternoon & 31c.sunshine

SueDonim Wed 20-Sept-23 20:24:28

It’s not marvellous - there’s nothing cheering about seeing everything dying around you. 😥. It’s been such a disappointing summer and now I’ve not been warm for about a week and won’t be again for months and months unless I want to risk a big fuel bill.

The dark and the misery of being blown by gales and battered by rain and snow, especially when trying to marshall small children as well. Yuk. Oh and dh’s arthritis getting worse over the next few months. Wish I could hibernate!

Delila Wed 20-Sept-23 20:19:17

Mollygo, I recently lost my little old dog, so this will be a first winter without her, but her fluorescent jacket is still hanging in the back porch, and the torch is still nearby, to remind me of winter walks in the dark with her (no street lights in the village).

Abracadabra Wed 20-Sept-23 20:19:07

Although not 32!

I dislike the heat as well so looking forward to Autumn. The forecast however is for high temperatures next week and into October. 32 degrees forecast for our Departement. All too much.🥵

We must both live in the SE? I feel the same. I’ve loved the wind and rain today but autumn is being snatched away by another band of heat 😭

Oldbat1 Wed 20-Sept-23 20:16:31

Where i live we havent had much of a summer. June was nice but i havent worn any sandals this year.

Dogmum2 Wed 20-Sept-23 20:07:58

Nope. As a SAD sufferer i dread autumn/winter. Short days, long nights. Heavy dull cloudy days with no real light. Closed curtains - feeling claustrophobic sad The odd winter sun is glorious, the first fall of snow is pretty, but the black ice makes walking our dog treacherous. The damp, the cold, making my arthritis make itself known. I do enjoy the brief autumn colours, but truly cannot wait for spring.

annodomini Wed 20-Sept-23 19:46:56

It's not as if we've had a specially hot summer in this country, apart from a hot spell in June and some more in September. I'm trying to think if there's anything in winter I'm looking forward to. As Shelley observed:
"If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?"

M0nica Wed 20-Sept-23 19:45:52

Bluebelle I was thinking about the journey from the technical point of view, driving in rain and wind, making decisions about speed, overtaking (or not), judging what other vehicles were doing and how their vehicles would respond in these conditions, rather than the ease or otherwise of the journey itself.

For various reasons I have not driven very much over the last year, and of course COVID reduced how much all of us drove,
I did have a little bit of trepidation about how much my challenging condition driving skills might have deteriorated through lack of use and was relieved to find that I was still able to drive competently and without worry in the conditions I faced today.

We live in a rural area, so travelling by car is almost essential. I also have difficulties with bus travel as I suffer from travel sickness. However I am quite happy braving the elements and will still walk everywhere if I can, regardless of the weather conditions.

Callistemon21 Wed 20-Sept-23 19:38:36

At least we haven't got to water the pots

Always look on the bright side. 🙂

Mollygo Wed 20-Sept-23 19:25:55

Delila
Every season is beautiful in this country, it’s hard to choose which I like best, but they’re all welcome when they arrive.

Agreed.
The only parts I don’t like are going to work in the dark, endless wet play times then coming home in the dark. Good job the dog has a fluorescent coat.

lixy Wed 20-Sept-23 19:18:15

Yes, I really hope we get a proper Autumn, clear and crisp rather than drizzle.
I do like all the seasons but Autumn is my favourite.

Oreo Wed 20-Sept-23 19:14:37

Autumn brings big spiders 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷

No no no, love the summer, the sun and heat lift my spirits, autumn and winter are just seasons to get through, I’m longing for spring already, I’m very fortunate to have a second home in Portugal, I’m already planning my next trip😀

There is the Algarve- and the rest of Portugal. I have friends in Porto and Lisbon, who say the winters are miserable, wet, cold, and with poorly insulated houses with no central heating!

AreWeThereYet Wed 20-Sept-23 19:02:50

Delila

I’m fond of February, AreWeThereYet, we often get some lovely days in that month and begin to see signs of life in the garden. I think November’s the gloomiest.

😁 Lucky we're all different or we'd all be depressed at the same time 😁

The thing about November is we've had Halloween and still have Bonfire Night, Christmas and New Year to go (plus my birthday!) but not yet had months of long, dark, cold nights.

Aveline Wed 20-Sept-23 18:57:38

Happy happy happy here. Just bought lovely new fleecy slippers. So cosy.

Jaxjacky Wed 20-Sept-23 18:56:14

I quite enjoyed this summer, last year I found too hot, about 25/26 for five months would be lovely. If I didn’t have Raynauds, I wouldn’t mind winter either, I get hankerings for a wood burner though!
