We have a small 2 screen cinema opening in our town next week.

I’ve been exploring their email which shows films and deals coming up. I’m really quite excited.

My late dad ran a cinema company, including one in my town which closed many years ago, so the cinema has been part of my life.

Anyone here had experience of Everyman Cinema ?

Hi NanKate, yes me! I've had experience of Everyman for quite a few years now, one nearby where I used to live and a fairly newly opened one in the town I'm in now. They are expensive, but the surroundings are lovely. Since Covid we haven't been to the cinema quite as much as we did prior to that, and I have to really want to see the film these days I'm more discerning, so in the last year we've seen Elvis, Oppenheimer and they were so good the ticket of the price was justified imo, but Barbie was probably the worst film I've seen in ages, so a complete waste of money. There is a bit of a discount for us older people. You probably know they serve food and drink, but personally I don't go to the cinema to eat so don't bother with that side of things. Their washrooms and foyer are styled very mid century, with black and white pictures of a young Brigitte Bardot for example, and ours has a terrace and bar, I think they're trying to emulate the theatre experience. One thing to bear in mind, if there's an odd number to your party, I took my grandchildren fairly recently and found it quite difficult to find a sofa with a single seat next to them, the single seats being limited, the sofas will be charged for two even if there's only one person on them, but I suppose that's inevitable. A lot of people think they're a rip off, as I say I don't go as often as I did so the higher price kind of mitigates the fewer visits.

You should try yours out as and when there's something on that tempts you.

DH and I love the Everyman cinema.
I’ve always enjoyed “the pictures”. I used to go to the silver screen pre covid, but that never came back.
Months ago I asked Dh if he fancied a trip to the pictures. He said no and described the experience, for him, in such horrific terms I could see why! Noise, smells, phones other people in general. But he said we would give the Everyman in Glasgow a try. It’s an hour way on the bus so not really local. I loved it, and so did he!
We’ve been several times now. To put this in context, we have almost doubled our lifetime cinema trips this year. We have been a couple for over 40 years.
On Friday he spontaneously suggested the Everyman as we were both off. He rarely wants to go out never mind on a whim, to the pictures.
So we I went to the Agatha Christie, when I was at the loo he ordered two magnificent espresso martinis 🍸. It was lovely. So comfortable, quiet, just wonderful.
Not cheap but so worth it.
So the Everyman must be good if even a lifelong cinema phobic loves it.

I am an avid film watcher. I used to go to the cinema at least twice a week before Covid. We have Odeon and Everyman multiplexes. I liked the Everyman for the comfy sofas. However, I rarely go nowadays unless there is a film I really want to see on a big screen and would choose the Odeon first. I am more comfortable watching at home plus it’s much less expensive. Everyman ticket prices have almost doubled compared to before Covid.

Most films are now streamed and/or released on DVD not too long after general release so I’m happy to wait. I’ve got Empire of Light (2022) on DVD to watch this evening. I watched Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis when it was released on DVD last autumn.

The thing I really don’t like about Everyman is that food and drink is served during the screening. I don’t eat meat and find the smell of fried chicken, burgers etc unpleasant plus staff delivering the food get in the way of the screen while I’m trying to watch. There are little wooden tables between the seats to place food and drink on so you end up with someone's dirty, greasy plate of leftovers sitting there for two hours. I’ve had someone knock a huge long-stemmed glass of red wine into my lap in the dark.

If I do go now, I try to go early in the day when the screen rooms are emptier so that I can move if I find myself near someone eating something smelly and less chance of people drinking huge glasses of wine at eleven in the morning. I also think the spillage from food and drink, people (not just children) wiping their greasy hands on the seats and cushions, is making the place very grimy. Yuk. The Everyman here is seven years old and needs refurbishment.

Well I hope you enjoy your first visit NanKate. I think Glenda Jackson's last ever film, she made with Michael Caine is soon to be released, she was such a marvellous actress, I think I'd quite like to see that if it's to be released in the cinema.

The Great Escaper with Jackson and Caine will open in UK cinemas from Friday October 6 2023.

It's showing on Everyman's website but no dates yet.

Thank you Caravansera

We have an Everyman near us and we prefer it to the local Odeon. It’s smaller and a bit more expensive which puts families and teenagers off . Which makes it a bit quieter. The sofas and seats are really comfortable and it’s nice to have a drink whilst watching the film . However because it’s a small room , it’s gets booked up quickly , especially if it’s a popular film .

Brilliant folks. Really looking forward to our first visit. Even DH wants to go 😳!

Off to see Poirot film today for the first time in our new cinema. Quite excited.

I went in on the second day of opening and they gave me the Grand Tour 👍😀

They closed our one and only cinema in our city centre. Out of area retail park has one but useless for people without transport.

What a shame harrigran.

Our experience was excellent. Fortunately our new cinema is in the centre of our riverside town. I think it will do well.
