Bus driver or conductor/conductress with a pencil or cigarette behind their ear.

Someone walking along whistling.

Rarely see anyone rolling their own cigarette

Chatting to my DS the other day, I told him I used to love coffee when i was a child, but I went off it and I'm sure it was because of the skin on it.
His face was quite the picture, "Skin?" I had to explain we'd get skin on coffee - though I can't remember why - and that when the milk was delivered we weren't allowed to shake the bottle as my dad adored the cream from the top of the milk. That was dad's little treat, as he never had milk in his tea or coffee!
Dad and I would share the skin off the rice pudding that mum made from scratch, its the only thing I liked the skin off!

We had Camp coffee in the caravan made with hot milk heated on the little hob in a saucepan usually in the evenings maybe after a “nice refreshing” walk on the beach…... (that should read as being lashed with force nine gale winds, damp sand logged shoes, saturated anoraks and straggly wet hair)
On seaside holidays there was also the sterilised milk from the campsite shop with a metal crown style cap.
Camp coffee was actually liquid coffee essence with chicory added.
I’ve still got some in the baking cupboard mainly for cakes, but not seen it in the shops for a while. The bottle design is iconic.
At home it was Nescafé powder from a big tin and this tasted quite different too, -made with scalded milk this formed a skin.
Never really took to coffee myself.

Butchers shops giving kids handful of dolly mixtures. Not to mention the sawdust on the floor

Bus conductors.

@Ali08 was that “coffee” with a skin chicory then? Brand name Irel
It was a coffee replacement during the 2nd w war.

I think my very elderly mum still has a bottle of it in her cupboard for making coffee cakes.

we used to have a shared telephone line and quite often the neighbour listened in to calls. We could hear a click when they put the phone down

Doodledog Mon 16-Oct-23 15:35:45

My parents had one of those grin. I'm sure it was in the hall so that (a) they could hear who my sister and I were talking to and (b) as it was draughty so we wouldn't stay on too long (or so they hoped)!

Telephone tables with a little padded seat with a yellow pages and phone directory on the shelf underneath and a little money box to put some money in for calls. Usually placed in the hallway.

I’ve just seen MrsKen has given the answer too 😀.

Ali antimacassas are pieces of material which were put over the back of chairs in order to stop the chair getting dirty when you lent your head back, especially for men with brilliantine on their hair. I think they may have been put on the arms of the chair too.

MrsKen33 Mon 16-Oct-23 06:14:18

In the Victorian era men wore Macassar oil in their hair. Leaning on an upholstered chair back might leave an ugly stain. Therefore small often embroidered cloths were placed on the chair backs to mitigate this. Thus antimacassers .

Ali08 Mon 16-Oct-23 04:57:26

What are antimacassers, please?

When I was young (50s) I'm pretty sure there were onion-sellers, on old bikes, with strings of onions draped over them. I think my Mum said they were French, if so maybe they could com over quite cheaply on Ferries then (we were on the South Coast).

Trains had thick cardboard tickets, most with the journey pre-printed on them, so the ticket office had giant racks for all the most likely destinations from a given station.

If you have a drive where you can park your dirty car, it is no big deal to wash it there.

My point was following on from MrsKen33’s observation about not seeing people mending cars on the street anymore varian.

At one time you’d also see lots of people out on a Sunday morning cleaning and polishing their cars but not nowadays, not around here anyway, more people choose to go to a car wash or have a mobile car valet to do the job whether they have a drive or not!
I agree with you Callistemon21the big automatic car wash is rather scary.

I went to the Eastern European car washers for the first time; they are very efficient but I did yelp when they hit the car with the pressure washer!

If you live in a flat, unless you ferry buckets of water up and down stairs or feed a very long hosepipe through the kitchen window to the parking lot …then a car wash is still very useful🤔

Callistemon21 Thu 12-Oct-23 20:18:01

It keeps someone in a job.

And yes, it is a big deal now.

Where else would you wash your car?

The car wash at the garage or the lovely local car washers who will valet it as well.

Mind you, it's a bit scary sitting in the car as the water from the pressure washer thunders down!
