I’ll start with I hate the perfumed fabric conditioners and love the smell of real cigarettes. My daughter doesn’t like the smell of freshly cut grass and likes the smell of petrol.

VioletSky Tue 03-Oct-23 20:51:22

I hate the smell of lavender

I love the smell of TCP (the antiseptic liquid)

SachaMac Tue 03-Oct-23 20:41:41

I like the smell of new leather & the smell you get when you blow a candle out. I don’t mind cigar & pipe smoke but not cigarettes. Love to smell a real fire with a log burning.

I hate the smell of whisky & the odour of hot steamed milk in coffee shops, makes me gag.

Lomo123 Tue 03-Oct-23 20:00:44

Love the smell of cigarette and cigar smoke. Petrol, new books.
Baby powder.
Detest the smell of meat cooking.
Youth Dew, vile.

CanadianGran

Yes! The smell of rain - but on hot dry earth. Petrichor.

CanadianGran Tue 03-Oct-23 19:41:25

Tenko, I dislike the smell of tomato plants!

Like: smell of stew cooking on a winter's day, summer pavement after a rain, peonies, babies' heads!

Dislike: lilies, diesel fuel, mildew.

Peat fires have the most wonderful smell.
Sadly they aren't many of them any more - which is good for peat bogs, I know

NotSpaghetti Tue 03-Oct-23 19:38:38

I'm another who hates the smell of barbecued meat.

And one particular clothes washing product. Not sure what it is but I smell it all over the place and it's very strong.
My daughter-in-law likes it.

Tenko Tue 03-Oct-23 19:27:53

I too hate any vanilla scented things and cigarettes.
I love the smell of the leaves on my tomato plants and newly laid carpets

HowVeryDareYou2 Tue 03-Oct-23 19:10:18

I dislike - cigarettes, anything vanilla or coconut scented. Petrol. Pork, bacon or lamb cooking,

I like - freshly-cut grass, baby powder, anything citrus (fresh or fragrance), curry cooking, TCP, Dettol and Sudocrem

Witzend Tue 03-Oct-23 19:10:13

Tar.
Dog. I don’t even mind wet dog.
Still like the whiff of someone else’s fag, too.

MayBee70 Tue 03-Oct-23 19:07:56

I used to like the smell of car exhaust fumes.

JaneJudge Tue 03-Oct-23 19:05:52

I absolutely love the smell of petrol too

lixy Tue 03-Oct-23 19:02:43

My instant uplift is to go into the local bike shop and just inhale; a new bike has a smell all of its own.

I really dislike the smell of barbeques and cigarettes, though a good proper bonfire is a rare treat.

Vintagenonna Tue 03-Oct-23 19:01:01

My mama hated the smell of hyacinths - "death'.

Hi Mrs Ken! I loathe the smell of Lauder's Youth Dew - it makes me sneeze & makes my eyes run. The people who wear it tend to treat it like air freshener in a toilet after a bout of norovirus.

I like the smell of pipe & cigar tobacco.

Esmay Tue 03-Oct-23 18:53:14

I love the smell of books and even the feel of the pages .
A kindle is not for me .
Otherwise Pears soap and Johnson's baby powder are nice .
I like most floral fragrances , but really love expensive oud .
Sandalwood is fantastic .
My father's pipe tobacco was lovely.
I think that it was called Sweet Briar .
I like Autumn bonfires - in fact the whole season - it's beautiful .

Cinnamon , cardamon , nutmeg and cloves are my favourite spice smells .
There are smells which make me gag and it's so embarrassing - ear wax , body odour , bad breath , vomit , poo , strong urine , cat pee and maggots ....

foxie48 Tue 03-Oct-23 18:40:16

I love the smell of horses, not ones that have been lying in a dirty stable, but their own natural smell. I also love the smell of my own dog but not other people's, he smells like mushrooms except when he rolls in fox poo, then he stinks! However, my favourite smell is old fashioned roses at the end of a warm day.

bikergran Tue 03-Oct-23 18:18:59

PinkCosmos Where is this shop! I need to go. lol

Georgesgran Tue 03-Oct-23 17:45:18

Vanilla - yuck!

DH hated the smell of lilies and said it was like cats’ pee. I love lilies, but kept them on the hall table when he was alive. Now, I have them in the lounge with me.

Loved Tippex back in the day.

25Avalon Tue 03-Oct-23 17:23:30

Brasso when I was cleaning badges. I’ve stopped myself now as it’s probably bad for you.

MrsKen33 Tue 03-Oct-23 16:33:10

Loved the smell of coal. The coal lorry and the coal shed. Plus tar.
Hate ‘Youth Dew’. It actually makes me gag.

Lizzies Tue 03-Oct-23 16:25:19

PinkCosmos I am with you on vanilla scents, I had forgotten about that.

AreWeThereYet Tue 03-Oct-23 16:16:41

Weirdly I hate the smell of meat cooking on barbecues in the gardens nearby, it actually makes me retch - but I quite like the smell of a steak grilling/frying in the kitchen. For the life of me I can't explain it.

PinkCosmos Tue 03-Oct-23 16:15:11

Dislike - Vanilla scented candles, or vanilla scented anything - yuck. The smell is really sickly.

Like - The smell of baking bread and proper coffee, though neither actually agree with me. The garden when it is warm but it has just been raining. The soiley smell that you get in Autumn

The smell of glue in our local shoe repair shop almost knocks you over when you go in. I am sure the owner must be permanently high!

Calendargirl Tue 03-Oct-23 16:02:19

I like the smell of hessian sacks.

Also love the smell of nutmeg.

TerriBull Tue 03-Oct-23 16:00:25

Tarmac! and yes petrol! fumes of both are probably really bad
Seaweed
Gauloises - weird because I don't like smoking anywhere near me, but I find the smell of French cigarettes evocative of mainland Europe
Roasting coffee beans - smell better than the coffee tastes
Autumn - it has it's own aura, smokey
I also loved the smell of pubs as a child, I had a friend whose family had one and when I went round to hers her mother always gave us a bag of crisps and an Orangina which was a massive treat back then

I'm another who doesn't like the smell of fabric conditioner, very chemical imo! I'm rather partial to a good quality diffuser Jo Malone or Neom, which I know some people don't like, but I do and I always have one on the go.
