SCAM WARNING - SARA HOPPITT

(14 Posts)

I've just received an email from a Sara Hoppitt. She claims to be a philanthropist, who is dying of cancer and who wishes to leave me a part of her (just under) £2 million fortune for my personal or charitable goals. She goes on to say that if I'm interested I should reply.

I've looked on line and this appears to be a scam although, for a change, it is well written.

Just to let you know to watch out for it.

Does she need you to send your banking details? 😀

ha ha ha. 'appears to be a scam' what? It definitely is a scam or spam as an email! bin it.

Might ask her to donate my bit to the Captain Tom Moore's Charity. I heard they need the money for a new spa. [Grin]

Tell her to Hoppit.

surely you could tell from the first line that it was a scam; i wouldn't have clicked to read the rest.

No ,I wouldn’t click but then sometimes they are so clever you think they are someone you once knew. I actually got a genuine one from a long lost uncle leaving me some money and I almost zonked it but his name was vaguely familiar, luckily.

Clicking on it doesn't hurt. It's when one responds that is a problem. And I did bin immediately. I put the warning up because some people, maybe older than me, may be taken in!

It’s bit of an obvious one Dinah
I don’t think age automatically makes you unable to see through this one 😂

Dinah, I agree it was obviously a scam , but thankyou for the warning. I agree with you that there will be people who would be taken in by this - not many but no harm in giving people the heads up.

They usually attempt to draw naive people in by saying we need £££ for "legal" (or similar) expenses to set this up. People are then foolish and greedy enough to think well if I send £££ I will still be getting the big sum mentioned. Then the "expenses" somehow increase because the victim has been hooked.

This is the essence of the scam - the few hundred pounds or dollars that the scammers are able to extract befome the victim realises they are being led down the garden path.

I wounder what happens when people reply well take the £££ for expenses out of my share!
