Bath aids

Thank you everyone ..... I have ordered a handle that clamps to the side of the bath ..... and hopefully that will make me feel safer getting into and out of the bath!

The flat I've moved into had a very small corner bath with a shower over it. I've had them replaced with a shower the full width of the (small) bathroom and have a non-slip mat plus a grab handle to assist getting in and out. Though I miss the luxury of a bath, I know my shower is safer and easier to get in and out of and do recommend it.

I really missed having a bath at first but much prefer having a shower now.

Have you considered having your tub replaced with a shower?

We have the handle clamped to the side of the bath and it helps a lot when getting over into the bath. We also have a handle on the wall by the side of the shower which we can hold on to if we feel unsteady when showering.

I miss having a long soak in a bath, but I couldn't get in easily and surely couldn't get out without help. So I have a shower now.
My mother got stuck in her bath once and had to have two burly firemen to get her out :-)

I haven't had a bath for a long time since I had my leg in a plaster and still use a sturdy shower stool now for safety.

If you had a shower fitted in place of the bath you could have a built in seat and handles and non-slip floor, DanniRae.

I’d go along with getting an OT assessment first. I was going to get my Dad a shower, but it was decided that wasn’t the best option for him and he was more than happy to get a bath aid and have a ‘bath nurse’ once a week. I’d go over earlier and get his soap - always Imperial Leather after Mum died - and fresh towels ready and put the heater on in the bathroom for him.

I was in plaster for leg for few months ( yes rebroke ...) and made good use of a padded bench designed to sit over a bath.... plastered leg was able to stick out and rest on loo seat!. I had a telescopic shower attached to the bath taps.

But the shower is over the bath so that might be difficult

I bought a stool on Amazon which is height adjustable for my shower and I could not shower without it. I cannot stand for long and I can get dizzy.

The floor of my shower is supposedly non-slip, untrue so I have a mat which fits well and I place it on the stool to dry after showering.

About 15 years ago I had to get rid of my bath as it was like the sinking of the Titanic getting in and then I had mega problems getting out. A purpose-built shower spared my blushes because the alternative would have been help from the fire brigade.

My husband was getting less mobile, more wobbly and falling more. I was worried about him getting into and out of the shower. I made a telephone appointment with our GP who arranged physiotherapy sessions at a local "falls clinic" and he also got an occupational therapist to visit us at home. She was excellent, made several good suggestions and arranged for grab rails to be fitted in our shower. Maybe ask for a referral to an occupational therapist who can advise on the best equipment.
