I had a sore throat last Sunday which lasted a couple of days, then lots of sneezing. Started coughing three days ago and got laryngitis. The coughing is wearing me out. I am drinking lots of lemon and honey but now wondering about buying some Boots Mucus Cough Relief medicine tomorrow?? I didn't think cough medicine worked but now, at 75, think perhaps my system needs some help. I had to cancel childcare for grandchildren this weekend.. hoping to be well enough not to cancel Friday. I think I caught it from them the little germ machines!

I had a cough for a few weeks earlier in the year, I didn’t feel too bad but got antibiotics after three weeks. They didn’t work so I assumed that was because it was a virus. Eventually forced to call the GP by my beloved sister I was whisked to hospital with pneumonia! I was not feeling terrific that day but it came as a terrible shock as numerous people told me they’d had the same cough for weeks too, hence not taking it seriously.

Bought a diffuser last year and found it helpful when I had hideous cough which was awful when trying to sleep. Few drops of essential oil (rosemary was good) and guess it kept bedroom air from drying. Also propping up pillows to keep chest slightly prone. Vicks on feet and chest, olbas oil inhaler. Had the lot!

I had similar 2 weeks ago and was told it was a new variant of Covid. I'd only been to Sainsburys. Sore throat like sipping acid and chewing razorblades, sneezing, coughing, painful chest, aches and lethargy...Slowly coming back to normal, but still so tired. I found cough medicine did nothing sadly.

I hope you feel better in a few days, but may be worth a call to the GP if not...

I was already taking vitamins D and C when I was smitten by my husband just days after Covid and flu boosters. Like others, the fatigue and sore throat were followed by runny nose and cough. Nothing relieved the cough and breathlessness except an inhaler, but I don’t have asthma. Paracetamol helped a bit too. Now I appear to have a mild chest infection and am still extremely tired. My husband’s symptoms are slightly different

I had a persistent cough for 8 years. I tried every medicine available, saw 2 specialists, had camera up the nose and down the throat and frequent doese of steroids, but still no cause found. It was very wearing, then when I broke my hip last year I was given co-codamol and lo and behold my cough disappeared, I am now on a maintenance dose of 2 tablets per day and my cough has never returned,

The problem with over the counter cough remedies is that they may contraindicate with prescribed medication, so it's best to seel advice from a pharmacist.

I had had a hacking cough for over a year and am thinking of wearing a badge say, I DO NOT HAVE COVID, because people keep giving me dirty looks. It drives DH mad.
Mine is caused by congestive heart failure, not much to be done.

I’m a great fan of bronco stop too, I think they’re herbal, both liquid and pastille are effective. Always cheaper in home bargains if they have them in stock.

I did onion in honey and strained it after a few days. It is in my fridge and is a good linctus for coughs

I’ve used that for years. And I like the taste 😊

Bronchostop pastilles for me too, bit of am acquired taste but they do the job

Esmay Mon 23-Oct-23 15:33:00

I've tried all the cough syrups and the best one for me is Broncho Stop .
I think that the name is awful !

My grandmother sliced a large peeled onion thinly, laid the slices in a bowl, sprinkled brown sugar lavishly over the onion, then placed a saucer weighted down by a weight from the kitchen scales or something similarly heavy to hold down the saucer and left the bowl standing overnight.

Next morning the person with the cough was given a teaspoonful of the liquid that had former overnight in the bowl.

Be warned! It tastes absolutely revolting.

BUT it works!

Daddy and I (the grannie in question was his mother. She claimed the mixture was her mother's idea.) agreed once that the mixture works by scaring the cough to death as no-one in their right mind would want a second dose.

Unfortunately, as second or even third dose is sometimes necessary.

Someone recommended Jakeman’s cough sweets to me, and they are the business as far as I’m concerned! Home-made honey and lemon with a spoonful of glycerin added - sipping it takes my mind off coughing. Yes, do try and see the doc, if it’s a chest infection you may need antibiotics.

Oh, and the traditional cold cure - home made chicken soup, known as ‘Nature’s antibiotic’ - recipe available all over the internet!

My mum used to dose us up with Vitamin C if we started a cold - can help, but Vitamin C can give you the runs, so beware!

Steam. Saline nasal spray. Sudafed triple action mucus relief. Lots of liquids. Rest.

Get help, why suffer and be plagued with something you can (hopefully) easily fix.

If an over the counter cough syrup does not help to end it, you may have to go to the Doctor, especially if it’s a prolonged siege. Then you’re dealing with something more serious, and may need a prescribed med.

As a very long term sufferer from Chronic Bronchitus I know a thing or three about coughs.
First try some Expectorant disolved into a bowl of Hot Water. Now lean over it with a towel over your head and breath it in. The Pharmacist can advise on what to have.
Next, if you stil can't shift it ask you Doctor for Cephlixin which used to be called Ceporex. You can only get it in prescriptioin but NOTHING other than that will work whatever the doctor says.

Being an ex-teacher in my previous life, I have all sorts of remedies which usually work. For a productive cough -steam! For a tickly cough - Covonia tickly cough syrup and at night put vapour rub (Vicks) on the soles of your feet. To keep colds at bay - Berocca in a pint of water every morning for a few days, Vitamin D, Echinacea drops.
As a last resort when all else fails - 2 raw garlic cloves between 2 slices of bread (if nothing else it’ll frighten the virus out of you - and everyone else keeps their distance)

Week 5 of this nasty virus and I have a friend who is on week 11!

Jeevee Mon 23-Oct-23 13:32:02

Thanks for all of your tips

I have suffered from dry lingering coughs after a cold for some time. I find inhaling steam really helpful, even steam just from a hot drink. Jakeman's cough sweets get my vote too.

I always found Bell's Healthcare Mucus Cough Syrup good. I paid £1.69 for it at Home Bargains.

We also use Broncho products. Seem to work for both of us.
