Thanks..I will try them. I have never had an antibiotic which requires you to stand up when you take them.
Jeevee sitting upright for 30 mins or so after taking it is fine. You don’t need to stand up. It’s just to reduce the likelihood of it giving you heartburn/reflux.

Help..this coughing is wearing me out!
(62 Posts)I had a sore throat last Sunday which lasted a couple of days, then lots of sneezing. Started coughing three days ago and got laryngitis. The coughing is wearing me out. I am drinking lots of lemon and honey but now wondering about buying some Boots Mucus Cough Relief medicine tomorrow?? I didn't think cough medicine worked but now, at 75, think perhaps my system needs some help. I had to cancel childcare for grandchildren this weekend.. hoping to be well enough not to cancel Friday. I think I caught it from them the little germ machines!

Doxycycline is great for chest infections but it's a vicious wee thing!
I had it in March, and just felt faintly gruey with it, as antibiotics can make one feel.
Got some last Tuesday: almost immediately I could feel my chest clear but by Friday I felt dreadful, and was back to coughing my head off. I gave up Saturday morning. (Discovered a cough is a known side effect).
Result! Chesty cough gone, Doxy cough gone. Sorted.
It does the job IMHO but takes no prisoners. Good luck!
Your post brought back memories of a nasty chest infection our whole household came down with back in 2013. Our GP was on the point of having me admitted to hospital but said he would try doxycycline first. I think vicious is the right word for it - it made me really sick at first, but boy did it work and I avoided a hospital stay.
There’s a throat spray you can get at the pharmacy - sorry, I can’t remember what it’s called but you have to ask the pharmacist for it. It’s got anaesthetic in it and as well as soothing the throat, it also calms the cough reflex for a while. That might give you a bit of respite from it.
slug of rum in a mug of black coffee!
Not to everyone's taste, but I like Covonia cough medicine and think it works well!
Also, Benylin.
I hope you feel better soon, Jeevee. If not, do go and see your doctor!!

A persistent cough needs medical attention. If your cough can be treated with home remedies, or a cough suppressant ,that's okay but perhaps you need a more active treatment.
Despite the disinterest you have the means of helping yourself Jeevee so I would xx

I had an awful cough last year and in desperation I bought Broncho Stop from my local chemist.
As soon as the tickle started I sucked one and it stopped it escalating.
I have recommended them to several people and the also said they helped.
I use Broncho stop because it works on both dry and mucus coughs and sometimes I’m not sure which one I’ve actually got. Also use a Beconase nasal spray and a Saline nasal spray. And put Vicks on the soles of my feet.. I decided to be proactive this winter and I’ve got all of those items in my medicine cabinet as I usually end up having to go to the chemists when I’ve already got an infection.
I have Doxycicline along with steroids in my COPD rescue pack. They are one of the few antibiotics, which do not cotraindicate with my heart meds.
I won't hesitate to take them if necessary.
I saw a very disinterested man at our weekend cover clinic yesterday. He said i wasn't worried about me but prescribed Doxycycline antibiotic and codeine cough medicine. The chemist didn't have the items in stock so I think I will wait a couple of days to see how I go. I googled Doxycycline and they recommend you stand up to take it..sounds off putting to me. Anyone else had Doxycycline??
My friend hung on for weeks but eventually had to go to the GP, ended up with chest and other infections. I would definitely get face to face advice. There does seem to be a lot of these coughs hanging around for weeks. Hope you get better soon. In
Thanks we have a weekend clinic so I will call them..if not I will try to see how tomorrow
Yes Jeevee
I was in hospital right away and had a nebuliser and antibiotics. They have me steroids too and now I have a steroid inhaler as my lungs have been damaged. Please don’t leave it, if it is something else then no harm done but if pneumonia or a chest infection you can damage your lungs. Just ring and I'm sure they will see you, I got an appointment the same afternoon!
Yes, Jeevee you have to see your Dr face to face so that he/she can listen to your chest and maybe send you for an x-ray.
In 2019 I had a terrible cough and tried everything to get rid of it. Eventually I went to the Dr and was sent for a chest x-ray because he thought I had what he called "walking pneumonia". Thankfully I didn't, but I had to have antibiotics and also steroids (I have asthma).
This was before we had ever heard of Covid but if someone told me now that Covid was in England in the late summer of 2019, I would say that my cough was that.
Please see your Dr. You've suffered long enough.
I will try and speak to GP practice tomorrow..are there any other symptoms
Thanks nanatoone. Do they give treatment for pneumonia??
Jeevee, that’s what happened to me, same scenario and I had pneumonia. Back to the GP for you please for a check on your chest. Look after yourself, had I not listened to this advice I might not be here now.
Back again for the wisdom of gransnet about my very bad cough. A GP prescribed me five days of amoxicillin over the phone and I have just finished the course but, probably because it is probably a viral infection, I am no better. The coughing is constant and sometimes will last for a long very debilitating spasm. Looking at NHS online it says over 65 speak to your doctor. On another NHS site ( Wales I think ) it doesn't say that. I suspect I have viral bronchitis. I remember works Ng with a lady a long time ago who said her elderly mother coughed herself blind! I am not a drama queen or hypochondriac but am not sure whether to wait another week. I don't think there is any treatment for bronchitis. I had it every winter as a child in smoky London.
I have had a tickly cough for months, tried various remedies and the only one I have found to stop the cough in its tracks are Broncho Stop pastilles. What a relief no longer having to explain to others, not to panic, I have a tickly cough, not COVID.
My cough has gone on 6 weeks …but as it’s precipitated by mild palpitations …doctor is ‘investigating’ …hadX-ray …CT scan …ECG….and blood tests….so far all negative , although still waiting on results of scan !
Doc did prescribed folic acid as apparently my body is a ‘bit short on it’….the palpitations seem to be subsiding, finially🤷🏻♀️
Coughing put me in 2nd place in a spelling test when I was 7.
Think about it.
Are you sure it's not the new strain of Covid? My daughter had a terrible ongoing cold and eventually tested. Yup. Covid....
Tumeric, black pepper and honey on a teaspoon or in a drop of water. I had a cough for weeks and this was the only thing that soothed it. I also read that cough medicine is counter productive as it stops you coughing up mucus. Good luck!
