From tomorrow we’re having the Gdcs for 3 nights and 4 full days over half term. They are 3.5, 7 and 8.

We have a few things planned, inc. a children’s theatre performance in town, so I suggested taking them to the nearby John Lewis Christmas Shop afterwards - it’s always spectacularly Christmassy - to choose a small decoration each. They always have a big tree at home.

He made a face and said ‘more tat’ or words to that effect, basically strongly implying that I should forget it.

FGS they’re still only little, surely it’d be a nice thing to do.
It’s not the money aspect - thank goodness he’s never been mean with money - but on 2nd thoughts I should have called him a bloody old Scrooge!
(I shall be taking them anyway.🎄🙂)

It's OCTOBER!!
What are they going to do for excitement in December?
Surely there is something else available ....

I dare say there’ll be plenty going on at home in December, but while they’re 60 miles away with Granny and Grandpa, and the John Lewis Christmas shop is very close to the theatre we’ll just have come out of, it did seem like a nice idea.

I doubt they’ll be staying again until February half term next year.

Just cherish the time you have with your grandchildren because they grow up too soon. A very good idea to send grandad to the church cafe and you can all meet up later. Enjoy your time - making happy memories.

Blimey. Some of the posters on here are candidates for the Bloody Old Miseries club with the OP’s husband.

Well I hope you have a fabulous time & leave Mr Grumpy at home. I hope the children love it and you find some beautiful decorations. I've bought the GC some gorgeous space themed ones, Santa on a rocket, a mouse in a space suit and an astronaut, hardly traditional but I think they'll love them. I don't care if it's Christmas tat, they'll find it magical and the small years are soon gone.

Greyisnotmycolour Mon 23-Oct-23 18:15:19

So what if it's October? I'll get to see my GC for two days this month & that's it until after Christmas. It's now or not at all. I'm sure there's plenty of us in the same position.

Have fun with the littlewits, Witzend. Mr W will enjoy it just as much as them and no doubt claim the decoration shopping was Grampa's idea all along!

Witzend Mon 23-Oct-23 18:27:31

I feel a bit bad now - dh is really a lovely Grandpa! But I did get annoyed at him pouring cold water on what I thought was a nice idea.

Marydoll Mon 23-Oct-23 18:43:36

We all need a rant now and then!
I moan about DH and hid denied deafness on the Good Morning thread, but people know he is a really a keeper!

I'm sure you will have a lovely time.

Yes, I know it’s only October, Wenmore, but it’ll be nearly November plus half term, so we want Nice Things to do.

Dh is not usually a Grumpy Old Grandpa, not most of the time anyway. He’ll be coming with us, but I might point him at the nice, peaceful cafe in the church, opposite JL, and we’ll join him afterwards. The church caff is v handy anyway - there are loos! And Gds is a Wee Monster - frequently wanting to Go.

Well, there you go. You’ll all have a great time, and will cherish the happy memories. 🌲⭐️

Describes it perfectly!!

Not all I have to say but some grand father's can be miserable. Leave him at home you will cope.
I love buying my GC Christmas ornaments I do every year. We haven't got a John Lewis anymore I went out with our DiL today and picked up some lovely gifts for the girls from the nearest T. K. Maxx.
It will be hard work having the GC I hope you enjoy and treasure it.

Im the miserable one in this house. GC currently here for a few days but DH is the one who takes them out places or plays games or watches tv programmes with them.

I’m exhausted just thinking about 4 youngish kids for that length of time. I look after 2 aged 5 and 2 but never together on the same day.

I did have to have a lie down in a darkened room just thinking about it 😃

Perhaps a few years ago!

JenniferEccles Mon 23-Oct-23 22:47:18

Am I right in thinking there are only three children (I guess only should be in inverted commas!)

Is the youngest three and a half so no five year old?

Callistemon21 Mon 23-Oct-23 22:50:48

Yes, "only" three! 😃

LindaBarlow328 Mon 23-Oct-23 22:52:53

Ruddy rude if you ask me!

It’s all about making memories, and your proposed trip out sounds just the thing. Your grandchildren will love it I’m sure and so will you. Have a lovely time.

Katyj Tue 24-Oct-23 05:55:52

Oh lovely we did this last year but at the local garden centre. It was probably just
a throw away comment he’ll be fine when you get there.
It’s the last break before Christmas so make the most of it, and have good rest afterwards.

Witzend, what negative replies from some .its a lovely idea, sure your husband enjoys them as much as you. The cafe opposite sounds a good idea too.You have to make the most of the time spent with your grandchildren, it passes so quickly. I miss mine so much but have very happy memories.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Oct-23 07:13:49

My grandsons are grown up now, but my goodness I and they (to my astonishment) have so many wonderful memories of our time spent with them. From days in - cutting, sticking, gluing plus a major project carried out in grandads shed - go-cart and the fun they had. To sledging and snowman building. To trips to the beach, theatre, restaurants, and London. To yearly holidays in Devon and Cornwall, canoeing down the river Dart, surfing in Polzeath and cycling the Camel Trail.

I was in my 50s early to late 60s and enjoyed every single second.

I say go for it - it is gone in the blink of an eye. But the memories are laid down for the rest of their and your lives.

Sounds magical Witzend and special, have a great time.

Oh, I agree! What a lovely day you have planned, and I hope you enjoy every minute of their stay. How anyone can describe tree decorations as tat is beyond me.

As for it being too early, our local authority has decided in its wisdom that schools will close for Christmas on Friday 22nd December, so where’s the time for a magical run up to the big day, even for those of us who do have our DGC close by? Both neighbouring authorities have gone for the 15th, which means a lovely week for three of our DGC of trips to Santa, ice rinks, pantos, Christmas crafts and fun. The other two can have a super week of nothing much to do in the bleakest week of the year in early January.

Enjoy the moment while you can, I say!

Yes - I evidently should have typed 3 1/2, rather than 3.5. Too easy to mis-read!

You'll have a wonderful time, building memories.
I loved every trip I did with my Grandsons,(now 30 and 28) when they were small.Half terms, holidays, tube , train ,museums, shopping, theatres and cinemas as well as walks and garden play.~They grow so quickly .
