My daughter in law and grandsons left 4 beautifully carved pumpkins 🎃 with orange tea lights I bought for them by their gate , together with a full box of roses chocolates and as a thank you some tricky little treaters stole the pumpkins ( unbelievable ) anx the boys aged 5 and 8 worked really hard designing them 🎃😢

Tricky Little Treaters!
(39 Posts)So looking forward to this evening, last year the littlest witches and monsters were out spooking just after 4 o'clock!
No scary stuff in this house, my window will lure them in with a pumpkin head scarecrow with black paper bats on threads, fluttering away ( just need to angle the fan and we're off).
Love listening out for their excited voices as the approach
If you celebrate this too hope you have a happy time !
I made up 90 bags of treats, the guisers started at 4.45 pm and everything had gone by 6ish and more were coming to the door. I'm thinking of putting less in the bags next year so that the workers coming later get something for their kids. I'm in west of Scotland
I dislike Halloween, but when children used to knock on our (undecorated) door, I told them we don't celebrate it, but we always celebrate 1st November as it's our daughter's birthday. So, I'd continue, if you come back tomorrow, we'll have loads of sweets ready for you!
There are local networks here (Manchester) posting of how feral teens have spoiled things for the younger kids by stealing bucket loads of sweets so there are none left for the smaller ones. One woman who was not participating (lights out and no decorations) said she had kids back kicking her door and banging on her windows. I would have been out there with a baseball bat I keep behind the door.
Some of the posters on mumsnet have said how they organised it like a private party to keep things local with "bouncers" at either end of the street to keep out the potential trouble makers.
I live in a very diverse estate and the parents around here dont seem to go in for decorating houses or haloween.
It's guising all the way for me. This 'trick or treat nonsense' is a shallow American import. We always had either a song to sing or a joke or poem to recite. My own children used to have great fun with their friends working out what their wee performances were.

I think it is very sad that this has become Trick or Treat' and nobody does either!
What happened to Guising when the kids told a joke, sang a song or said a wee poem, did a magic trick?
They seem to just put their hand out for sweets.
Another tradition lost to America and commercialism.
I agree hundred per cent. I much preferred guising at Halloween instead of the American import, but maybe it was always more of a thing here in Scotland?
However I am really impressed at so many Gransnetters entering into the spirit of it for the kids.
Its blooming bonfire night im dreading!- with the bangers going off every five minutes and who knows what the young teens will get up to with fireworks- a new estate is an unknown entity and some of the kids seem a bit wild round here so far🤨
Yes even on 28th they had all put on costumes (i figured maybe they were at a halloween party as it was weekend instead-a neighbour accross had decs on her door) but one little lad asked if he could have a lolly even though he wasnt dressed up!-yes of course he could. At least he was polite to ask.
We didnt put any decs out but got trick or teaters on the 28th! I gave them a big handful of lollies anyway i said dont come on 31st as well😂But we got some on 31st dont know if same kids or not as my son handed out the lollies this time! Next day a lady called from freecycle to collect something and a little boy was stood at the door- i said to her "is he allowed a lolly?" She said "he's not mine"!-i think he must be one of neighbours kids then(brand new house so dont really know them) anyway he went then, probably just as well or whole neighbourhood kids would call everyday for free lollies🤣😂
We’ve only had 5 kids round, but that’s 5 more than last year. Dh and I are naturally broken-hearted at the thought of all those little packets of Cadbury’s mini chocolate fingers we’re going to have to eat up. 😩
(I will save the leftover chocolate eyeballs for the Gdcs).

It is, BL - I love peace and quiet, can’t stand screaming kids.
I'm going to scream when the little ones across the road come! 😱 😂
Oh dear, I think I frightened the two year old when I screamed, more than he frightened me!!
He was happy with the treats though.
Yes that's it for this year!
One boy about 8 looked at me very carefully and asked if I was all right with trick or treating?
They are so interesting they vary so much and had gone to a lot of trouble with their costumes.
I picked up our little dog who barked at them and think we scared them more!
Two tubs of miniature heroes later, I have taken the decorations out of the window.

*None here - no children in the village*
Sounds like a great place to live.
Biglouis that made me spit out my wine laughing

Last year lots of kids came round but so far this year - not a soul! To be fair it is raining a bit. Looks like we'll be eating Haribos and mini Milky Ways for a while.
DD1 is away this week, but her newish development will be heaving with little ones and their parents doing the rounds.
The rule is either take one sweet from a container left outside, or, if the house is decorated, knock and the owner, usually in fancy dress will hand out a sweet to each caller. Most of the houses have balconies and witches and monsters will be illuminated on them. Unfortunately, last year was marred by bigger boys (about 12yrs old) who went round tipping entire bowls of sweets into carrier bags and laughing, swearing and bragging how much stuff they had - it was rumored they weren’t local and had come just to steal the treats.
My little estate is 30+, so no little ones here, although I do have an Autumnal pumpkin wreath on my front door.
Enjoy! And I’ll enjoy the sound of silence!

We have a few new families here now and I leave a big tub of wrapped sweets out for them. They are very good they don't knock because they know our dog is nervous.
I’ve gone down the lazy route this year and just drawn faces on our three pumpkins - they’re at the front door getting rained on (along with my best broomstick), but the marker pen’s holding up well! We have cobwebs, witches, dancing and banjo-ing skeletons in the front window. And plenty of treats ready in my cauldron for the visitors. We can get anything between 6 and 20+, so I may or may not have leftovers for later.
I don't carve faces on pumpkins. I just stick a pair of sunglasses on it. Job done. 😎
DD in the midlands just messaged to say they’ve had already their first trick or treaters. Her boys are only toddlers but they’ve put pumpkins and decorations on the porch.
Happily I’m located well out of the village and they don’t bother coming up here.
